Profanity

People who use profanity serve as useful indicator to the rest of us. It's a sure indication that they aren't bright enough to be worth chatting to and certainly aren't mature enough to group up with. The resulting click to /ignore ensures I never have to see them display their lack of both an education and a worthwhile vocabulary ever again. Sheer bliss.

The M rating applies to what the developers put in the game. It doesn't apply to players. According to the Terms of Use you can be banned or suspended for profanity. It's at the discretion of ZOS.

This will happen trust me. It doesn't even have to be your normal curse word. I said boobies in chat and was reported and warned for my use of bad language which is against their Code of Conduct moreso than TOS.

I am not offended by any bad language, its more of an annoyance for me personally.

Use words that are constructive to what you are trying to say.

Imagine like if you are like talking to like some one like this. <--That is what profanity is for me, its useless words that just take up space and get in the way of the point you are trying to make.

Don't think its just a few cuss words. An occasional f-bomb doesn't bother me. It's the conversations that grow more and more abusive, infantile and graphically scatological/sexual/perverse. A few words blocked out here and there won't fix it.

Going through the process of one-by-one "ignore"ing them is fine to a point, but by then you've already had to wade through it. And you have to do it constantly. These social-disorder types seem to breed like roaches.

To be clear: This kind of stuff is definitely against the TOS, and is no more appropriate than if I was to start shouting similar stuff in a department store (You know... private property open to the public but with its own rules as to what's allowed).

They need an easier way to click a name and report it in chat, complete with chat logging to grab the offending content is what they need. And a heavy ban hammer for repeated offenders.

If you really want to swear, do it verbally without microphone on.

    Exactly that.

The paragons of virtue actively CHOOSE not to use the tools provided to protect their delicate eyes/ears from something that they know with 100% certainly WILL occur.

On top of that, lets say you get your very silly way - who decides what constitutes 'profanity/swearing'?

Some people dont think any words are that offensive and should be freely used, some people object to mild words (such as "bloody"). Who draws that line? What the pious folks are arguing for is censorship, a censorship that must fall within their view of how the world should be.

Also, for the oddball that says its irrelevant that children are playing an M rted game (and therefore the grown up should watch their language). I would suggest that strangers shouldnt have to watch their language to protect someone elses children. the PARENTS have the responsibility to ensure the children arent accessing material that they shouldnt be accessing (and in some countries it is illegal for them to do so).

I am not here to ensure your kids dont see bad things. Thats your job.

Usually damn and hell are acceptable. For some reason the F word is regarded as more offensive. To me, profanity is harmless and just adds color to one's language. And I have quite a colorful mouth when I am talking in my element. But I do try to temper my words around those I know who find it offensive.

I've got no time for do gooders who are foaming at the mouth to report you for uttering so much as a "crud" and bursting with pride when they announce on the chat "Reported!"

Equally there is no place for those wanting to shoot their mouth off annoying everybody else.

Profanity has it's place but used all the time it loses its effectiveness. Kids who are old enough to talk know profanity and know that it's bad so that's a lame excuse. It's nice though that in general I don't see it used very often at all, I'd say this community is up there among the best I've experienced in MMO's.

In short; moderation is best, on both sides of the coin.

You know who i think is unintelligent? People that use this tired old fallacy.

Shakespeare is littered with profanities, so are Chaucers works. So is Beowulf. So are many literary classics. Many of those authors are considered the best and brightest in their field.

There is no correlation whatsoever between how often you curse and how intelligent you are. Nor does it have anything at all to do with vocabulary development. I challenge you to show me conclusive (or any) evidence that proves a correlation between the two.
People who resist cursing during argument, particularly on intellectual matters, are f****** pretentious *** who think it makes them look smarter. It doesn't. It makes them look like a pseudo-intellectual moron who's trying to sound like he's smarter than he really is.

The guy that said that was spot on.

Sheesh, I hate these knee jerk brainless pronouncements.

You don't want hard core x-rated content to be broadcast on network tv? You want censorship. You don't want people yelling fire in a movie theatre? Censorship. I can't put a billboard showing a person getting their head blown off on a public roadway? Censorship. Society is full of censorship.

And anyway, ZOS is a private company, not a government. They can do what they want in their own chat system, and impose whatever terms of service they like, and throw you out if you don't abide by it. Just as a convenience store can have me removed from it if I stand in the middle and start screaming the F-bomb.

And there's plenty of kids who's parents have no clue or don't care. Those kids are garbage we as a society should just ignore and not take even the most basic steps to protect? Nice. There's also parent's who did view the game, and made the decsion to allow their kids to play based on the content (I would certainly let my 13 year old play) but weren't exposed to the zone chat excesses.
So... the kids are just SOL? Because you can't be bothered to control your language or not engage in detailed, graphic conversations in the public chat?

Not to mention the fact that I, paying for a game, shouldn't have to wade through that garbage just to ask a question. Their's private (guild and tells) methods of communication available to you. There's no reason you can't keep it clean in the public one.

That's the ironic thing about forum moderators and moderation in general. They're moderate the hell out of profanity, but they'll let rudeness reign all day.

If I ran things, I'd let anything go except for mean people. I'd moderate anything that was said by a meanie head. That way everyone had to be nice little lambs to each other. They can say F F F F F F F F F all they want, but they have to be nice to each other.
