DirectX 11 and Compatible Video Card

I think it would be a good idea to send all TESO players an email alerting them about the upcoming requirement change. I can't be the only one playing on an old computer and thankfully found out when I tried to launch the PTS that my video card isn't DirectX 11 compatible. I know a lot of the TESO player base doesn't play PTS, read forums or keep updated on patch notes, so I think alerting everyone by email (and possibly on the launcher and login page) about the change will prevent players on old computers from getting a nasty surprise when they try to launch the game after downloading the TG patch.

FYI: trying to launch the PTS without a DirectX 11 compatible video card causes an immediate crash before the logos even play and the crash report box pops up.

Alerting everyone now means anyone with a similar problem has a month to sort out upgrades!

Excellent idea. Plenty of people play on older systems, alerting people in advance gives them a chance to upgrade.

So is this correct the oldest cards that will work are

ATi Radeon HD 5870
NVIDIA 400 series (ie. GTX460, GTX470, GTX480)

I wonder how many players will be out of a game after this patch hits?

I know when it launched 560Ti was the recommended low end, as that is what i had at the time.

There are so many different cards that you need to use the DXDiag tool:

In the Start Menu search for and run DXDiag.exe

Choose the Display Tab (There may be more than one)

The "Feature Levels" (sometimes listed as DDI version) will tell you the versions of Direct X your card can handle.

Agree. There are a lot of players who don't read the official forums. There are even a lot of players who don't start the game through the Launcher. Email or the Login page is the only real option.

I have set a note in my Guild's MOTD to let everyone know, but that only works for the Guilds where GMs are aware of the changes themselves

It can, as long the video driver supports the needed OGL version.

While I think its important to know....I am on PTS right now running it on my older gaming laptop while working.

its a GTX260M but running an OS of Win 10

Not sure that anyone should be playing this on a PC with an older graphics card than that.....sorry if thats too harsh for anyone. I mean this thing is awesome for work....and it still runs the game on high graphics at 15 - 30 FPS but....its a couple years and models old for a gaming laptop

I run on two firmware modded sli gtx 460 at max voltage/over clock. Runs about the same as a high 500/low 600 card. Glad it will still run - dodged a bullet on that one.

If done correctly each card can reach 950mhz@1.215v

These cards WILL support dx12, and I have been able to run 63:9 resolution with triple monitor support at lower frames.

I would hope so - given that people can pay for a 3 month sub in advance, it really ought to be considered mandatory to advise all customers of potential system requirement changes that may prevent them from playing the game well in advance of said changes.

You could try changing the UserSettings file in the ESO directory and scroll down to SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D11" and change this to read D3D9 instead. I had to do this back in the day but with a new video card I now don't.

Not sure if it works in this new version but if it does maybe the Devs can have a toggle option in the console somewhere.

Are Intel HD 4000 chips affected by this change? I know being able to install and run DX11 isn't exactly about using its features. My GF plays on a demi crappy Laptop. Would be a shame if she can't play anymore

Also is this 64bit client specific or across the board?

Hello Pendrillion, I was able to play ESO since beta on a old laptop with integrated GPU Intel HD 3000 but since the new patch I won't be playing anymore my system isn't capable of running DX11 it's just limited to 10.1 even by forcing it through Directx properties.

I was able to play around 25 & 35 fps in most areas, by now if you force it to run DX11 just got less than 10fps even in loading screen.

I am saying goodbye to this game until I can buy another PC/Laptop.

Open your Usersettings.txt file and try changing:

SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D11"

to

SET GraphicsDriver.7 "OPENGL"

But I wouldn't hold my breath on getting any better performance.

Zenimax disabled OpenGL support for Windows clients. That setting doesn't do anything now.
