Magblade New Spammable?

So if you're like me and have been using Swallow Soul/Funnel Heatlh as your main spammable DPS as a magblade... there may be a new player in town.

I'm referencing @hedna123b14_ESO build/discussion at http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/noss-unoriginal-guide-to-magblade-dps-4-mantrials-tg-ready/

I believe @liv3mind originally mentioned this in his thread.

Anyways long story short... if you're using Nerien'eth monster helm you should be using Force Pulse over Swallow/Funnel. Now why you may ask? Because more procs from the monster set! Now if you're like me... I wasn't entirely convinced that this would be a DPS boost or would be worth using to begin with until I did some testing.

Here are my results:
(excuse the bad graphics, I did the testing on my laptop QQ)

iv5veeo.jpg

CYL2mlJ.jpg

Swallow Soul
Test 1 100 Hits 8 Lich
Test 2 100 Hits 10 Lich
Test 3 100 Hits 7 Lich
Test 4 100 Hits 10 Lich
Test 5 100 Hits 7 Lich
Avg of 8 Lich Crystals per 100 Swallow Souls

Force Pulse
Test 1 99 (33) Hits 10 Lich
Test 2 99 (33) Hits 8 Lich
Test 3 99 (33) Hits 10 Lich
Test 4 99 (33) Hits 7 Lich
Test 5 99 (33) Hits 7 Lich
Avg of 8 Lich Crystals per 33 Force Pulses (total 99 hits)

So for every 99 "cast" of Force Pulse you are getting an average of 24 Lich Crystals compared to only an average of 8 Lich Crystals per 100 "cast" of Swallow/Funnel.

Now let's also look at other benefits Force Pulse provides over Swallow/Funnel:

Destruction Staff Passive (Penetrating Magic): 10% Spell Penetration
Destruction Staff Passive (Destruction Expert): Free Magicka if you get the killing blow on a mob!
Destruction Staff Passive (Elemental Force): Free dots!
Elemental Drain: Increased Procs for magicka return to make up for increased cost in skill between FP and Swallow/Funnel.
Engulfing Flame (DK Buff): 10% Increased damage to your flame attacks/weaves

Those are a lot of benefits over Swallow/Funnel!

Now let's look at some Cons:

Swallow/Funnel self heal: You will essentially lose your ability to self heal in groups/raids... but the way I rationalize this is if you're a DPS anyways then it's your job to maximize DPS while staying out of red and let your healers take care of the rest. I would most definetly still use Swallow/Funnel in Maelstrom Arena and maybe in groups/raids if it looks like the healers are having trouble.
Swallow/Funnel cheap cost: Force Pulse (for me in game currently) cost 1781 over Swallow's cost of 901. That's a big difference, BUT as I mentioned before Force Pulse enjoys the benefits of Elemental Drain and I would almost take a guess that you gain more magicka than you lose when you consider the dots you use and the weaving.
Siphoning Tree Passive (Transfer): I'm losing 2 ultimate gain from every 4 secs to every 8 secs on recast of my Crippling Grasp dot.

That's it! As a pure DPS who wants to maximize their DPS and you are using Nerien'eth and/or Scathing Mage Set... you should be using Force Pulse! Again thank you @hedna123b14_ESO for bringing this to my attention and getting my curiosity piqued. I have proved myself wrong that Force Pulse shouldn't be used as NB.

TL:DR - Use Force Pulse as Magblade.

@hedna123b14_ESO could give you the math on that, but no Swallow does less damage. Not by much.

doesn't swallow soul do more damage in general though?

Unbuffed Swallow does around 4.44% more damage than Force Pulse, however Force Pulse gets buffed by the Altmer passive, making the difference a mere 0.44%, next the buff from the DK Burning Breath Makes Force Pulse deal 2.897% more damage than Swallow. Now this is without accounting for the extra chances to proc destro staff DoT's, the 10% increased penetration from the staff passives and most importantly this doesn't include the increased chance for Siphoning attacks procs and Nerieneth procs making your DPS skyrocket.

really cause my swallow soul does 8k damage while my force pulse does 6k damage and I can cast swallow soul faster.

I'll copy and paste my post. However, Force Pulse > Funnel for sure. I still believe using Neri over Kena is a big DPS loss, but to each his own. Force Pulse is not better because of more procs on neri, it's a better skill in general. Force Pulse does more damage than Funnel, not on tooltip, but on actual mobs.

Anyway, this is my post on tamriel foundry:

Tested Force Pulse in VMoL last night on all but the final boss. (I’m not confident enough in many things to make the switch). Things I noticed
    1. Definitely felt like a lot more damage (with and without Scathing Mage)
    2. Easily sustainable with siphoning attacks every other twisting application (around 32 seconds; so about a high 40ish% siphoning uptime). I had 75%+ resources at all times which was crazy. I’m thinking I may not even need siphoning attacks. I did use siphoning every add spawn 2+ on second boss though.
    3. The ulti gen you miss from funnel every 4 seconds is kind of noticeable, but not noticeable enough. I had an ulti (even Kena’d most of the time) for every add spawn phase on Vashai and Skinrai, which is all the ulti gen you really need.
    4. I noticed some of the damage I was taking, but it wasn’t anyting that would cause a death. Just not used to the health bar dropping much :P

From my assessments, Force Pulse > Funnel in 2 scenarios
    1. If you use Swallow Soul
    2. If your team is good AND comfortable enough to only trust the healers for heals.

Lalala. If your using siphoning skills u shouldn't even be using nerieneth. You should be using malubeth or kena with double la. With your set up your not only losing self heals for yourself but for other group members too. There's no reason why you can't be both dps and heals.

In a raid as a dps it is not your job to heal as well as dps. Your job is to maximize dps, for the rotation I use Kena is a dps loss... you can't proc kena when you use multiple dots. This has been tested and proven by numerous people.

Definitely noticed a huge improvement on my Dunmer magblade after swapping to force pulse, the lack of self heals worried me a little at first but tbh it's only really an issue when you're playing the pug lottery. Thanks for spending the time on testing this lads much appreciated.

With Dunmer passive for increased flame damage they see the biggest increase to FP.

This is slightly off topic but I know most mag blades now have merciless resolve on back bar and cast it less often for dps, I'm wondering how much of a dps loss it would be to morph to relentless focus. This is because I pvp aswell and the Stam regen is quite useful. Thanks magblades :)

The Tooltip difference between the two morphs is roughly 2k, which is pretty significant in terms of DPS.

Even you are using it for PvP the 10% increase to stamina regen isn't going to be helpful at all as a magicka build (unless you are stacking stamina regen for whatever reason), you would be better off just adding stamina with tri-food. Now also using this in PvP you are still better off with the Merciless morph because it adds the 40% snare... also hits harder.

In short, yes it's a DPS loss and a waste for PvP.

Kena is much better than Neri in ST fights. If not, show me some proof. Because it's general knowledge now that kena is BiS for most magic builds. Medium weaving is worse than Light Weaving from what I have seen, especially on a Magic NB. Less Merciless Resolve procs because it takes longer to medium weave than Light weave.

If You Think That Medium Weaving Is worse than Light Weaving then I have nothing more to add...merciless is a skill that has to be pressed two times (if you're aware), Assasin's will hits slightly harder than 2 swallow souls. Each time you press the button to activate merciless you are not using swallow soul. Since the animation on the two skills is the same you are gaining a slight advantage by using assasins will since it does slightly more damage and is free....

And yet, you have not posted any numbers. I don't think you actually read what people are writing. No, Kena is a DPS loss for those of us who use multiple DoT's in their rotation. You waste time trying to proc it. Your assertion that Kena is BiS is so unfounded and misguided. Please actually do some testing before making claims and stop quoting people who use different builds/rotations. It has no bearing in the above mentioned post I linked or here.

Now I'll start screen shotting all of my parses, I was able to get a few last night in Vet Maw. Keep in mind these parses have deaths in between (thankfully our raid had some on point rezzers) so I lost some DPS. I only screen shotted if I knew that my parse was going to reset. Anyways as you'll see below my Lich Crystals account for 3-5% of my dps consistently.

I also want to point out on these that we had not gotten to the crazy amount of adds yet, where I would be seeing an exponential growth in my dps. Again I will be screen shotting more parses on different fights for future reference. @Vezuls I encourage you to do the same and come back with actual parses/videos and builds/rotations for your supposed BiS gear.

Nerieneth is better than Kena silly:) it deals 5-9% of my overall damage AND i get to medium weave non stop...oh and my resources are full:)

Nothing to do with PvP at all lol

I don't use Nerien'eth or Force Pulse in PvP, I would only hurt myself. My build/rotation is completely different from PvP and I usually have no issue killing most people. I find that I have trouble with the player as opposed to build people use.

Awesome DPS. I assume this was a completion and so you got the crazy add phase so your DPS is pretty consistent with what a lot of great end game players are pulling. Also keep in mind that Force Pulse acts as an AoE if they any mob has a destro DoT on them so essentially more free DPS.

Yes it was a full fight. But we killed one boss after the room split and the other one was ~15% life. So its just impale at the end and i had to ingnore the adds.
