Never seen a MMO launch this bad (and i've been in 11)

I've been in 11 MMO launches, and none were as bad as this:
  • Massive botting of public dungeons
  • Rampant item duping for infinite gold
  • Annoying gold spamming in every conceivable form (zone spam, whispers, guild invites, in-game mail)
  • Quest bugs that have been around since beta, still not addressed
  • Items and bank slots disappearing
  • Unscheduled server downtime
  • Players hacking (run speed, invincibility, etc)
  • Numerous typos in game text
  • and now innocent people getting banned for no reason

All of the botting / duping / hacking is destroying the integrity of the game, not to mention giving gold sellers unlimited gold to sell for real cash

How can people say this is a good launch?

Yep. The servers made a good job but the game code is still in alpha.

Good game being ruined by all these issues. I hope they get them fixed by the end of the 1 month "free trail" period we had to pay $60 to help them test.

I don't necessarily agree. In fact, during EA and the first few days following launch, I would say it was the best I've been in.

That being said, the customer service and communication from ZOS is by far the worst I have ever seen, as is their handling of all of these issues.

It is the most disappointing launch I've been in, just because I had such high hopes for the game, and because I do really like the game at its core.

You forgot having to set up a subscription plan in order to access the FREE month and then getting the 5-days long(for me, at least) "authorization hold" on the money.

I think it has been a great launch and I am experiencing minimal issues. Why this is always the case with me I don't understand, but I never seem to have the issues other players do. We will see when I get home if I am banned. I will submit a ticket and go do outside things while I wait. Deep breaths, less emotional responses, good life :)

then I think your memory is flawed. I've been in the following launches and all had every single one of these same issues excepting the bank bug:
daoc, wow, swg, shadowbane, swtor, ac, gw2, and war. Especially in the first few months. This one has been out for...3 weeks?

you forgot rubberbanding (swg!) and rollbacks too! which as least we havnt gotten yet from eso....yet I do admit its possible.

-Happens in every game, every launch. You should know this if you've played "11 MMO's"
    • Rampant item duping for infinite gold
-Sure, their response to it has been slower than it should have been, but this is another common bug/problem that occurs in a multitude of games.
    • Annoying gold spamming in every conceivable form (zone spam, whispers, guild invites, in-game mail)
-Happens in every game, and is a problem(still) in a lot of games. At least you can right click ignore them, unlike the launch of FF14 where you had to manually open up your black list, type in their name, etc.
    • Quest bugs that have been around since beta, still not addressed
-In my memory, I think Rift was the only game I've played with almost no bugs in quests that were around since beta. But that could just be anecdotal.
    • Items and bank slots disappearing
      -Possibly your only valid complaint.
    • Unscheduled server downtime
-Oh cry me a river, they take servers down to address problems now, and not later. They can't win in this scenario because whiners will say their response time was too slow for the problem.
    • Players hacking (run speed, invincibility, etc)
-I haven't seen any of this, even in PvP. So I'm not going to comment on this.
    • Numerous typos in game text
-Every game has typos in it, if you look hard enough. But thanks, GrammarNazi#3403849

It doesn't seem right to direct your frustrations of botters/dupers/hackers, or gold sellers/spammers towards Zenimax. All of those are caused by people outside of the company.

I wouldn't let things like those affect my opinion of any game's launch as they are directly caused by players of the game, or third-party companies seeking profit.

The only thing the developers can do is write anti-cheat engines and those are simply code. Which the botters have already broken once before. A never-ending battle.

You can't accuse them of "not being on top of it" when they're obviously making an effort to ban people exploiting and spamming.

People can't think five feet forward anymore. None of this will affect the game long term. They will fix it and life moves forward. Treating incidents with emotion in haste is human, but we should evolve beyond these basic instincts. Rational analysis people!

People now days figure that if other MMO's have gone through the problem then it shouldnt be a problem on this one. Like they all share code for writing thier engines and thier anti cheat code and methods. Its unrealisitic in my opinion but in this day and age its the way a vocal minority think. If this game came out in daoc or swg days the forums would be filled with excited, patient, suggestion filled people. Most of the people are just out playing the game. Assuming that we have 1mil players and there is 1000people with a legitimate issue on this forum that's only what.... .1%?

Only the people that like to play the forum game (its a sport to some) or people that that want to help or have a legitimate request for help that come to the forums. So this forum isnt really a valid view of the state of the game.

Not sure what launches you played but you sir are wrong..
wow - some servers were down for weeks, characters totally deleted, multiple duping exploits throughout the first couple years. Bugs during beta that were still in game over a year later.

swtor - speed hacking, duping, awful servers, lagggggggg

FF- do i even have to write out their problems, they pulled the game and completely redid it.

GW2- duping, serving problems, leveling exploits, gold farmers, bots

i can continue if you want

    lol this guy

The only game that had a smoother launch was Rift and maybe GW2 and some other obscure titles no one has heard of.

The launch has been pretty solid, the bugs are piling up and need addressing and the customer service sucks, but the worst launch? Not even close. Go back in time and play WoW at launch with week long server outages, character rollbacks, bank bugs, randomly disappearing equipment, abilities that didn't work, and entire zones with no content. This went on for over a month, then after you dealt with servers with as much technological horsepower as a graphing calculator, so you lagged doing anything at all.

When it comes to programming, it's not like they have access to other companies code that they can cut and paste. They need to build from the ground up. Your assumption is ludicrous that companies can learn something from one another about the programming of a private game. About launches? Sure, Zenimax had a flawless "launch" per say, with this being the only MMO in history where on launch day you could hit "login" and do just that - login. First try, no server DC's.

Programming is tricky as hell, look at WoW today. Backpack of 16 slots, because they cant change the code or they'll wreck the game. They can only make secondary bag slots larger until they rectify the code, which they basically stated they cant do, because it's built into the core functionality of the UI.

You're either lying or you need to get your memory checked.

This launch hasn't been smooth but it's been playable and mostly functional. I've played MMO launches where crashes and rollbacks were constant. Hell, in SWTOR I had a bug a month after launch where I couldn't sell or delete items for a week.

Yes there have been issues with ESO but this is one of the smoothest launches I've seen in an MMO.

-shakes their head- Selective memory, all the problems you listed are common with mmos releases, and think you may need a memory check.

Sure the problems seem huge, but do think back to the first few weeks of any mmo, even some of the famous ones and you will see these issues and worse.

I haven't gotten an Gold Mail Spam since last night so far, and haven't gotten whispers from gold spammers, maybe I have been lucky or its not a problem in the higher zones.

I'm happy with the game(and am expecting to see fixes towards the end of the month or first week of may has is normal for big mmo fixes, with things only found at release when everyone is playing and doing things for a long time), and think the release has gone way better then my past mmos.

Just my thoughts in any case.

I find it funny, how people keep going "previous MMO's had problems too, so its normal for ESO to have them!"... Really?

Are people seriously perfectly ok with companies who dont learn from the past?
And this can be said about any MMO's who repeated the same damn mistakes as the ones before them.

There is so god damn many MMO mistakes to learn from, so why did ZOS not learn from them?

When a basic MMO feature like player storage/bank, remains bugged 3 weeks after launch, waves a huge red flag for ZOS and ESO.

ZOS have had all the learning tools around them for a long time. Many of theese bugs/errors/mistakes can not be excused with "its normal with MMO launch".

But ya know, I bet it will be the same with Wildstar. And probably EQ:Next.
Companies today, just never fraggin learn from the past.

What you say sounds great in theory but in the real world it's not so simple. Do you think that this engine and code has been just copied from some freeware site? That companies share thier code that can be just dropped in and BAM an inventory system? No. They have to recode basically from scratch and in millions of lines of code written by 10s of devs that all have to work together. It's just not as easy as you think. If it was then mmo's would be coming out perfect by now. I know as an IT guy myself that even if 10k other admins have used x config on thier Cisco firewall that I still have to review it line by line by line to make it work and fix it to make it work. One missed line and routing or traffic gets screwy. Imagine a multi million line config? Makes me shiver

I think bugs and exploits are always going to happen and aren't huge issues as long as they are addressed swiftly.

However, the gold spamming/bots are unacceptable. They are a problem in every MMO and ZO don't seem to have given them any consideration whatsoever. It would be easy to stop the spam by simply prohibiting all mail and chat messages from characters below level 5. Different spawn points for resources and bosses would mitigate the effect of bots.

A lot of damaging issues have happened to this game since launch, far worse than I remember in other MMOs (although I didn't experience WoW's launch or SWG). It makes me worry about the future of the game. I really hope they get this sorted soon.
