Server lag

I haven't seen server actually lagging like THAT out of PvP like...ever, til like a week ago. Someone broke something major this time. It seems random, was doing Spindle just today everything was perfectly fine til at one point on Praxin we all randomly froze for 10 seconds. Giving those annoying healers all the time they need to fulheal everyone in the party. Praxin is already nuts WITHOUT server lags, you know. If challenging content is released, at least make 300% sure it'll actually work.
I've asked people in my guilds, everyone seems to be having it. Just random 5-10-20 seconds freezing out of the blue when nothing moves. Then game tends to catch up, but often by this time you're already dead.

I'm not in the USA so first thought that might be part of the problem - though it's never been before - but my teammates from the US get very same thing. It's ridiculous. I've had to quit Wayrest the other night because of it because there's nothing I can do if I freeze for 20 seconds a time.

And yes, I did try repair and I am sure it isn't related to my internet. It's on server's side, and it needs to be fixed. Fast.

It's not just you. On the NA server this morning my group just gave up because of the lag trying to group and meet for a boss. Needed to craft something and it took over five minutes of 30 second pauses and trying to get the game to recognize the E key. After that, movement was so bad just trying to get to a wayshrine we said forget it. Many in chat were complaining about it as well. Happened around 6:00-6:30AM EST on the NA server today.

Is this a lag where everything stops for a few seconds, including the ambient sound?

I experienced intermittent lag and unresponsiveness on the NA server on 2 different characters this morning as well. Had to restart computer twice. I think something is not quite right. The one time I was just trying to craft.

I'm not getting sounds, nothing happens.

Thank you for reporting this issue to us. To assist you all with ruling out the most common causes we would like you to first complete the below process.

    Power Cycling the Network
Power cycling the network will allow you to start over and re-establish a connection to the internet, eliminating any stale connections causing an issue. To complete this please follow the below steps:
    1. Shut down the computer
    2. Turn off your router and/or modem
    3. Wait two minutes and turn your router and/or modem back on
    4. Wait an additional two minutes for them to power up and then turn back on the computer
If this fails to solve the problem, please respond to this post with the following information (or create a ticket with these information).
When you do, please provide the follow info:
    • Who is your ISP?
    • Is it constant or intermittent?
    • What time frame / date were you seeing this problem, if it isn't constant?
    • Is it only in specific areas of the game, if it isn’t constant?
    • Are you connecting to the Internet through a wired or wireless connection?
    • Are you using a Firewall or Antivirus software, if so what are the program names?
    • Have you tried using another computer at the location?
    • Do you have any other programs running in the background (streaming, downloading, etc.) during the times you're experiencing connectivity issues?

Thank you for your understanding and patience while we're investigating further the latencies you are experiencing.

@ZOS_LenaicR - thanks, I will try this next time I encounter the issue. It seems fine today, as I said, it's kind of random. However, I'd like to point out when I got it, it was usually at the same time with other people on the server(I've had at least 10+ people in one of my guilds confirm getting same problem, and my 3 teammates with whom I was doing dungeon kept freezing at EXACTLY same moment for exact same period of time), who were playing on different computers and even in different countries. It seems unlikely that we'd all have same issue at EXACT same time if it's something on our side.

The lagg I have, happens whenever theres alot of players in one smaller area of cyrodiil, either a sige or a battle somewhere (alessia bridge).

Lagg seems to almost walk hand in hand where trains are (bomb groups spamming aoe)

I've gone so far as to have the local repair guy out to check for line noise. The issue still persists and there was no noise.

    ISP: Time Warner Cable Dallas
Mostly constant, happening every night and happening with even low and medium pops on Thornblade NA
Frame Rate can be high or low when this happens.
Primarily happens in Cyrodiil, but has been seen in PVE zones.
    Connected using a wired connection.
    Using avast! Antivirus
    Happens using a different computer.
I've shut off background apps, still happens.

Thanks for your report @Magdalina, sorry to hear about this issue while you were in dungeon. When stating "freezing", was it latency or stuttering for you?

Latency: Nothing is moving in the world but your FPS is fine
Stuttering: the World is okay but you have really low FPS

Feel free to provide us with the information requested above so we can create a ticket for investigations. Do you remember the date and time when it happenned?

Everyone getting lag bombed simultaneously would logically lead one to suspect its not on the players end. Whenever there is that inability to act, use siege weapons, and open doors, etc., people usually ask in zone if anyone is getting that lag and they always are.
  • jkirchner71ub17_ESO2
Well one thing I can guarantee is going through this checklist will resolve your lag :(. 100+ players going through this checklist will definitely end the lag because now they are restarting their routers, rebooting their computers, closing all background programs they may have running, contacting their ISP and, if they are lucky enough to own another computer that can run ESO, moving to that computer. If you are lucky you will get back into ESO and Cyrodiil just in time to save or take the keep and that is only if you didn't end up in the queue again, which we all know will happen if the campaign is locked.

Come on Zenimax we have told you time and time again for months, it is when large groups of players converge on a battle. I have ZERO lag until the numbers at a given location go way up. Whether or not it is intentionally being done by players spamming AOEs for no other reason than to lag the server then I'd say some bans are in order as they are compromising the gaming experience of hundred of players at a given time. But that is Zeni's job to figure out and I'm not convinced all the conspiracy theorists on here can really prove without a doubt a particular alliance or group of players is purposely lagging the server. I'm inclined to say the game is currently unable to handle the large-scale siege battles that happen on a hourly basis in Cyrodiil on the big servers.

While i agree keeping a clean running state on a PC would help any online gamer, i don't thing this issue is client side. most of the "lag" i see in pvp I notice when actions i do animate, you do not impact the world, or simply fail to animate for some time. example, unsheathing your weapon. you press the key, and you unsheathe 2, 5 10 or even 30 seconds later. if you pressed it again during this delay thinking your keystroke had not registered, your character may take his sword out, and back in again. same effect with keep doors, popping you in, and back out again.

I also notice sometimes i will die while riding on horseback seemingly in 1 shot, but death recap says my opponent fired off 5 snipes in a row to kill me.

please note I keep a clean machine and do not use an antivirus. I browse using a virtual machine and keep my gaming rig OS clean as a whistle. So I doubt very much is client side. I also play Planetside 2 with great success and see no lag in it's large scale battles.

I will provide this info as resquested of another player, in hopes you guys can get this resolved soon.

Who is your ISP? - Rogers Cable Internet
Is it constant or intermittent? - Intermittent, in Cyrodiil only, at or near large battles.
What time frame / date were you seeing this problem, if it isn't constant? - daily, in AvA
Is it only in specific areas of the game, if it isn’t constant? - Near large conflicts or player gatherings.
Are you connecting to the Internet through a wired or wireless connection? - wired only, I negate the router altogether when alone at home as well.
Are you using a Firewall or Antivirus software, if so what are the program names? - None whatsoever, I browse using a VM as stated above
Have you tried using another computer at the location? - Yes, with same results on my wife's laptop.
Do you have any other programs running in the background (streaming, downloading, etc.) during the times you're experiencing connectivity issues? no, I shut off / suspend the Browser VM for gaming.

With respect, please do not tell us to restart our computers and routers as if we are 6 years old. This is a server side issue. We all get this lag at the same time in Cyrodiil, it's easy to tell because zone chat explodes with angry players wondering why they still pay to play for game in this state(PvP).

Not only that, but server crashes and scrollbacks as they have become known as it's so common now. We get this on a daily basis and largely when the server is at medium to high pops. It only takes a couple of groups to stack up and your server takes a massive dump. The ping can reach 999! I am on EU, we have people from all across Europe and countries outside of Europe playing on Thornblade, are you seriously suggesting the lag and performance issues we all experience at the exact same time is down to our computers/ISP? No, it is on your end and has only gotten worse over recent patches.

Some of the major issues are performance and latency lag. Sound effects stop playing, graphical animations stop working and do not recover even after the lag/performance has recovered causing us to relog each time. PvP has some major issues. I logged off last night because of the insane lag on EU Thornblade and decided to watch a stream by a guy called Defatank on Twitch TV. At the time he happened to be in PvP on the NA server and guess what? he was experiencing the exact same issues i just had on the EU server. This is a problem both mega servers experience when it comes to PvP.

Ain't it always the case. Don't have to have any of that running and ESO will still lag in cyrodil.

Also, the fact that Customer support blames our local internet proves none of these guys play this game. They just give the copy/pasted script they have to give about connection problems and collect their paycheck.

What time frame / date were you seeing this problem, if it isn't constant?
Daily, in cyrodil it doesn't matter if pop is low, med, or locked. In PVE any place where more than 10 people are gathered

Is it only in specific areas of the game, if it isn’t constant?
Daily in cyrodil, PvE groups of any kind, Rawl,
Are you connecting to the Internet through a wired or wireless connection?
    Wired

Are you using a Firewall or Antivirus software, if so what are the program names?
    No

Have you tried using another computer at the location?
    Yes, same issues.

Do you have any other programs running in the background (streaming, downloading, etc.) during the times you're experiencing connectivity issues?
    No

I would venture to say that since it affects everyone on the server simultaneously, it is extraordinarily unlikely to be client sided. Further, it is probably worse PR and a waste of technical support time/resources to continue investigating it as a client sided issue.

Exactly. This isn't a client side issue. When hundreds of people in the same area complain simultaneously about the same issue, it is not the individual computers at fault. FFS if your servers can't handle the stress, change pvp to accommodate your rubbish systems.

While I don't agree with those bashing on ZOS, its understandable at this point. Enough of us are competent enough with computers that we can distinguish the difference between client and server side lag.

When you have 100s of players, all with different setups and connection types, experiencing the same issue with latency, at the same time and location in game, it is NOT client side.

By continuing to treat this as a client side issue, you are only making people more frustrated, and less likely to renew their sub.

Can we please have an update or comment from a developer to shed some light on this?

Those of us who only PvP have put up with more than our fair share of bugs, memory and network leaks, and we're still here. Please don't insult your loyal customers by continuing to insist that the problem is on our end.

These examples are accurate examples of the "situational" lag around fights. This is not a connection issue. Although I will say that the ESO connection is the worst I play with. SWtoR is about a 42 ping response, Everquest Landmark is about a 60 Ping response, League of Legends is a 42 ping response, ESO is never less than 120ms.

Yes... because every player needs to reset their modem and "power cycle their networks"... good job. MEGASERVER ACTIVATE!!!
