Need Some Help With My GPU/Blackscreens

So the game keeps going to a black screen when I play, I alt tab out of the game and my OS(windows 7) says that drivers are crashing my gpu(not exact wording)? I have tried to update my drivers but all of them say they are up to date: checked my gpu, cpu, and Microsoft for updates.

Background; This was not happening before 1.2 went live, I have tried lowering my settings in game, changing the "d3d9" to "d3d11" in the user settings and altering the monitor sync in game, none of this stops the black screen and my gpu dropout.

I do not know what else to do to stop this any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can you please provide some of your system stats? It will greatly help us to provide you more concrete advice. What CPU, what GPU model, etc.

Let me guess you use an NVIDIA card? Most of us that do have this issue. Here is how to get it working.

Go to your UserSettings.txt file. Make a copy of the original. Always good to have. make the following changes:

    "SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D11"" to "SET GraphicsDriver.7 "D3D9""

    SET FULLSCREEN_v5 "2" from "2" to "1" (windowed fullScreen)

    In UserSettings.txt i changed:
    SET RequestedNumJobThreads "-1"
    SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads "-1"
    -to:
    SET RequestedNumJobThreads "0"
    SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads "0"

In the game settings I changed:

In video settings i turned VSync On

Some need to start from eso.exe and some can use the launcher. I use the launcher with no issues having the settings above.

The black screen is tied to using DX11 vs DX9. We being most NVIDIA users have to run DX9 hence the update today so we could see ghosts and projections running DX9. Double check your UserSettings.txt file after you log in. Sometimes it will change back to DX11 and I had to make mine read only to stop that.

Set windowed full screen. Alter only that. You should be okay then.

It helps with the stutters we get because we are forced to run DX9. If you leave it at -1 you will pretty much lag out in cities.

So just to clarify..... the game was running on dx9 at launch then the patch hit and now it is dx11. Only for reason ESO does not sync with the NVIDIA software so it crashes in game, is that about right?

It's always been DX11. For some freaky reason NVIDIA users regardless of card or driver get a black screen for no reason. You can be running, fighting or just standing still and black screen then crash and it takes down the driver. To "fix" this we had to change DX11 to DX9 in the usersettings.txt file. Then when 1.1.2 came out none of us could see ghosts/projections running DX9 so they did a "fix" for 1.1.3 that allows us to run DX9 and see ghosts and projections again. Support has worked with me since 4/1 on this bug and still can't get anything to make it stop other than forcing DX9. :( They have tried many settings and forcing the exe files to run as xp sp3 and win 7 and nothing works. If DX11 is ever set in the usersettings file, it's crash city every few seconds.

its a known bug. they arnt doing *** about it, even called the customer support line and was told I would receive an email with the fix within the hour and should expect a call back shortly.
Its been 2 days and I have gotten neither, and the customer line I called has been disabled

I have been having success by launching the game via the Nvidea launcher thing using optimised settings - have always been running fullscreen (windowed) with ultra settings but since 1.2 this is the only way I can get the game to work, if I try to improve the graphics settings from what it puts it on then just crashes again.

Getting to the point where it isn't worth trying any more, can see why so many people have quit... 3 month advance sub was a waste it seems.

I'm running nvidia and dx11 just fine. So it must be under "some conditions" you may have to do that. Gtx660 and i5 with 16gig ram. Winos 7 ultimate using 337.xx drivers. Haven't had any problems with frame rate or crashing since launch. Running everything maxed exception distortion. That seemed like a performance hit.

I don't use addons so that isn't an issue for my problem. I did a side by side of my UserSettings.txt file and yours. Here are the things that are different in mine:

SET CachedRLREnabled "1" mine is 0
SET CachedReflectionResolution "4" mine is 0
SET CachedShadowFiltering "5" mine is 4
    SET REFLECTION_QUALITY_v3 "2" mine is 0
    SET PARTICLE_DENSITY "3" mine is 2
SET SHADOWS "4" mine is 2
    SET VIEW_DISTANCE "2.00000000" mine is 1.
    SET AMBIENT_OCCLUSION "1" mine is 0
SET DISTORTION "0" mine is 1
    SET MAX_ANISOTROPY "3" mine is 2
SET FULLSCREEN_v5 "2" mine is 1 I run windowed full screen
SET FullscreenHeight "1080" mine is 0
SET FullscreenWidth "1920" mine is 0
    SET WindowedHeight "1080" same
    SET WindowedWidth "1920" same

I run NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 driver 331.82. I have tried other drivers and new ones as well. The game crashes non stop on any other driver than what I have right now. I have memtested, cpu tested and any other kind of test you can imagine to ensure it isn't a hardware issue. I have even wiped the drive, reformatted and installed the OS a few times to make sure there isn't something left over from a driver uninstall. I spent the entire first "free week" down trying to find one driver that would work. The driver I have using DX9 is the only way I can play. Support has had me change compats on the launcher and eso.exe from win xp sp3 to win 7 and as soon as I change to DX11, crash. I can run all my other games at DX11 so I am out of ideas.

no idea either, works fine on the majority but seems to be a minority that is really buggy. Bst thing I guess I'd suggest is to reinstall dx11 and .net framework and I think they use the c++ distribution. I know you said you did a full reformat but maybe after you got stuff installed something upset your installations? I know its reaching but I'm kinda stuck for you.

Yeah I did all of that. I even went as far as not putting any other programs on this system. It is an ESO dedicated system right now. Mail etc are all on another system I have. Just to make sure there isn't some program/game that is causing the issue.

I verified after everything that installed including updates that there were no error messages in the sys logs so I could catch anything that went buggy.

Well the wierd thing is I have not blue black screened or crashed once since early access. All that is left from your description is hardware or system drivers. As in eso not playing well with your hardware or system drivers.

Thier q&a dept would know better than I on what isn't compatible out there. And there always a percentage that don't work well with one client or another.

Nvidia Driver crash equals to GPU overheat.

Nvidia drivers, do not scale well by default the fan speed. So your GPU overheats and crashes. I know I know some games do not do it. But other games (TESO, War Thunder & BF4 currently) do need it. Especially when you have crack up the settings.

What you need to do, is download the MSI Afterburner. Set up an aggressive fan profile similar to this one, and make the MSI AB to run on restart.

I haven't got any issues with my GTX660/i5/16gb/win7ult even at beta test.
Now i've got clear installation of the latest nvidia drivers. GF Experience didn't works for me at all, so i didn't launch game through GF Exp.
FULLSCREEN(not windowed) works bad for me. Playing at FS(w).

GPU can be overheated by ESO just above 80+ celsius.
Manual\user's-auto cooling triggers really needed. Try to monitor GPU's temp.
I have got about 72degrees with 60+% cooling fan RPM.

Yea temps are fine. I push DX9 hard with ultimate graphics etc and it doesn't crash. As soon as I change it to DX11 I log in, choose my character, character loads and I just stand there in the street for around 1-2 minutes then black screen and driver goes down. I have even lowered DX11 graphics to medium on the game, same results.

Well I think I got it figured out. I went online to NVidia and manually installed the latest update for the GeForce software and that seemed to do it. I also had to update my java before I could download off their sight but I doubt that has anything to do with the problems I've been having.

I launched GeForce Experience software and manually added ESO to the game list and launch it from the software.

One strange thing I did notice however, when I manually added the game I inserted the actual game .exe as well as the user/"addusername"/mydocuments/eso folder as I have the downloaded game on a different hard drive than my OS and it poped up twice in the GeForce software as two separate games. The really weird thing is that I can launch one of them and it will play fine but if I launch the other it still has the same problems......
