Just think of them as generic units if it's easier?

Most education in the US on measurements are inches, feet, miles, etc. It's also the unit of measurement reinforced in all real world, every day tasks. Many Americans do get a brief lesson on the metric system in science class, but it is not something we're expected to retain unless we go into certain types of careers.

Anyway, OP, I doubt the compass is a good real indicator of meters anyway. Just know the bigger numbers are further away really.

It's not even plausible in meters. If your character stands right in front of the targeted location it often still shows "20 m", while realistically the distance should be 2 meters at most.

That pretty much only applies to trade/government work. Even our government signage uses our customary units. For example, a speed limit of 50 mph is 50 miles per hour.

There is not widespread usage of the metric system in the US. In places where it is used, they often use both. This is because they know the average American doesn't know or use the metric system.

However, when it comes to things science or medicine, then the metric system is used. So, it's not totally alien to us just not something we have to know.

Understandable but to be fair this is not even showing meters, when I'm close to something to be like realisticly 2 meters far from it it will show "12m" so...

Anyway this feature is pointless and there is no reason to be forced to have it, we should be able to turn it off.

Actually, you will find that metric use is quite extensive now in manufacturing as well as pharmaceutical areas. Even John Deere has converted to metric. Export manufacturing needs to be in metric to enter foreign markets. In many situations, USA produced items need to be in metric to be afforded an import license.

The US Military adopted metric quite a long time ago in order to standardise to the NATO procurement framework. There are many thousands of US manufacturers supplying NATO standard equipment and supplies who do so using metric as a requirement.

The USA is slowly moving towards total use of the metric system, there is push-back but it won't be enough to stop it.

ESO introducing it is a small part of that transition. (I am still waiting for ZOS to stop using MM/DD/YYYY date format and revert to what the rest of the world uses. (DD/MM/YYYY)

(BTW, the US Dollar has been metric/decimal since 1785.) :)

Why does it matter which units are displayed on the HUD? I understand being annoyed by seeing numbers under the icons, but I don't understand why anyone would be annoyed by the chosen unit of measurement.

I'm sure most people would be fine reading the distance in feet and inches, even if they've never been taught that measuring system. In the context of this video game, the unit of measurement is irrelevant.

The units are the same as every other measurement in game.

All distances in game are in 'meters,' All of the measurement is done in these basic units. After all, look at the tooltips of your skills: melee range is 7m, most pull spells are 22m, other projectiles tend to have ranges of 28m, and special skills like snipe can go as high as 40m.

Yes, you can argue that they're clearly not the same as real-world meters (after all, what person extending a dagger from one arm will be able to poke someone 7 meters away), but that's just the measurement system in game.
