Does anyone use Bastion as a companion most of the time?

I haven't unlocked him yet, i've only been using Mirri who is my first companion ever and so far i don't see the complaints with her. She has never disliked anything i have done really, and she seems cool i guess.

I saw a post on the forum some time ago that had "companion meta" details and Bastian was the best support with all quickened gear and that's all I needed to hear.

Places like reddit, its not so veiled, with outright slurs being used to describe the character.

I'm not surprised about Reddit, but accepting those kind of "jokes" here is a disappointment.

For some reason the forum allows some really vile comments on Bastian related threads. I've seen things stay up that really should have been nixed straight away. All you can do is report them but some things take multiple reports when they really shouldn't have to. Which really feeds back into the impression that Zos does not give a stuff about Bastian as character and the players who prefer him.

Please make sure to report instances of vile remarks. And please feel free to tag me. Even if I don't see it on the first tag, I will eventually see it and take care of it. Checking in with customer service now to address this.

Thank you Kevin. In the few months I've been here on the forum I've learned to dread any thread where Bastian is subject of the discussion - I find myself thinking "oh god what horrendous comments are going to be here today?" before I've even opened the thread. It leads to players who like Bastian as a companion feeling very unwelcome on the forum. Which is awful really because no player should have to run a gauntlet of distressing comments just to share with others their feelings about their favourite companion! So I, and many others, would welcome action on this.

Not to mention how all the cheese torture and other bizarre things are to people who have lactose intolerance. Or how being a kind person with morals is awful, and of course all the "jokes" and insults regarding his "masculinity" or preferences are really uncomfortable to a lot of people.
I hope the reports will be taken more seriously.

Clearly, going by some of the things Gina and other devs has said in streams, which has been brought up in other discussions about Bastian.

Oh no, I wasn't aware of that, I must have missed that somehow. What did they say?
Now this was some time ago, and I can't be bothered save these streams for references, though I should at this point, so these are very paraphrased.
During the introduction streams where they talked about Bastian and Mirri, for Bastian they were pretty much "uh cool tattoos right? Oh well, moving on this is Mirri -sings her praises-"

Then worse, during one of the High Isle streams they more or less said Bastian is boring and stuck up, but they still wanted a moral character so they remade the concept with Isobel, who is better and not like him.

Does this mean there will be action taken against posters who state negative feelings about Bastian? Some players just don't care for him and having personal opinions about an NPC doesn't violate any forum guidelines that I am aware of.

I think it's more about sexist or homophobic remarks. Of course not because they insult Bastian as a fictitious character, but because they might make real users feel unwelcome.

I have not seen any vile statements directed at him. It is a fact that he's not very well liked by a lot of players and they have stated their reasons for not liking him, but I don't see how this is a forum violation.

I personally don't like his personality or looks, but I did make a "Bastian Appreciation Thread" once in an attempt to highlight his good features and try to turn the focus from the negative. But to be honest, the thought of action being taken against posters for not liking an NPC concerns me.

Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Those who like a different companion to you have a right to read a thread without being made uncomfortable by sexist or homophobic comments. You have your right to an opinion but you don't get to make other people upset and uncomfortable by bringing those sort of comments here. That's it.

Agreed. I don't have any use for any of the companions, as I am absolutely NOT going to go on killing sprees to level them (not to mention that I just don't LIKE the whole companion schtick).

None of them will ever have any relevance to me. I don't want "sidekicks". And the fact that someone is out there micormanaging posts about any companion.....

    Ugh. Just.... UGH.

No one is micromanaging posts, or being against people dislike a companion or companions in general.

People have issues and have reported when people have actually been posting sexist, homophobic, toxic masculinity, and downright bizarre comments about torturing a character for mentioned things and other weirder reasons.

Just because neither of you have seen it it doesn't mean it have happened, and this concept is not that difficult to grasp.

It's not hard to act with some manner of decency.

I wrote it in another thread about another topic just yesterday: Tone matters.

I don't think there will be any action taken against players who write things like "I don't care for this companion", "I find Bastian's lines too cheesy", "Mirri is too snarky for my taste" or "I personally don't like Isobel's religiousness".

Homophobic insults or sexism are a different thing: "Gay jokes" against Bastian. Sexist remarks against Isobel because she doesn't seem comform to some male user's idea how a woman should look like.

I think the difference is obvious.

Yes, all the posts celebrating torturing Bastian have struck me as needlessly cruel and have been quite upsetting, not because I like him, but more generally because they promote a toxic mindset I think is best left on Reddit or Twitter.
Then worse, during one of the High Isle streams they more or less said Bastian is boring and stuck up, but they still wanted a moral character so they remade the concept with Isobel, who is better and not like him.

:'( They could have just upgraded his dialogue.

I like Isobel, but she's not better than him by any standards. Her dialogue lines are more varied and less repetitive, so this is again, something they could have fixed with Bastian or Mirri. At high rapport though, she fangirls way too much is too over-enthusiastic about the player, and I really prefer Bastian's calm manner. And her constant references to Stendarr, I mean, Sithis save me! (I don't even like Sithis).
Does this mean there will be action taken against posters who state negative feelings about Bastian? Some players just don't care for him and having personal opinions about an NPC doesn't violate any forum guidelines that I am aware of.

I don't think saying "I don't like X" is the same as loudly celebrating torturing them, or promoting bigoted ideas about personality traits and gender/sexual identity.

In the time I have been here, six months perhaps, I have seen plenty of what I am describing. I have reported many of them, and as I said in my original comment, had to report them more than once to get the removed despite their content. Some of these comments even targetted me directly. Others have added to the conversation saying that yes, they have seen such comments and such comments make the forums unwelcoming and uncomfortable.

So whether you have seen them or not, they do exist, they are a problem and do need to be addressed.

And thats the last time I'm going to discuss this with you.

Yes, me. Bastian is for me the one and only.

When companions started, I was really happy as I'm used to heroes and henchies from GW and miss them. Bastian was my first and somehow, our team was straight nicely working while I didn't feel at ease with Mirri.
From there, I got Ember, but never leveled her up and didn't bother picking up Isobel.

I tend to believe that using one or the other more, depends a lot on players activities. For what I do, I don't need a "strong" companion what gives me the freedom to chose based on preferences. And it's Bastian. <3

They really need to add option "quest dialog only" for companion blather. Players should not need to install addons or turn volume of all chatter to 0 to use companions . And while they are in it add option to silence bards.

When there has historically been a pattern of something occurring, we know it will recur unless something material happens to change the course. I hope now that Kevin has noticed this issue, there will be less toxicity here. I would assume the same treatment as any topic on any forums on the internet: disagreements and negative opinions are fine as long as they do not promote hate, violence or bigotry.

Anyway. Getting back to the topic of companions, I like Bastian for his calm and kind manner. I find his presence soothing. I was thinking that even if we were able to have another male companion, I will probably stick with Bastian. (Because, really, if they tried to write a less controversial character, well, most of the popular characters in ESO haven't really been to my taste anyway).

I only use Bastion on one character, and he's more of a victim than a Companion. He's such a whiner.

How is he a victim and "A whiner" exactly?

    It's role-play. This is a role-playing game after all.

The character who uses Bastian is played as an evil, mind-bending, necro puppet master - a practitioner of Imperative Psychomancy (loosely based on Vivec). Being a puppet master means the character never harms another creature himself, but commands others to do the deed for him. Mostly undead, but also Bastian.

One of the long-term objectives of this RP character is to let negative rapport accumulate with Bastian. It makes him whine more about the character's behaviour.

Bastian makes such a wonderful victim for this RP character precisely because he whines so much. No matter how much he dislikes it, Bastian continues to obey orders and defend the character, going against his own principled beliefs (e.g. murdering aggro'd innocents and attacking guards). It really feels like Bastian is a victim of mind control, unwilling yet unable to resist.

I enjoy this as an occasional distraction from the usual, unrelieved good-guy questing this game provides.

Just to be clear here on my end, anyone is free to dislike Bastian as a companion and voice that dislike. There is a big difference between dislike and voicing potentially harmful language as a way to portray that dislike. Context matters and we'll look into reported examples as they come up.

But if you love cheese and it bothers you that Bastian dislikes cheese or your find his voice lines annoying, it's totally fine to voice that.

Same and I don't think thats an unpopular sentiment for those who really like him as companion. Which is why it would great if he could get updated lines and brought up to the level of the newer companions.

That is quite the take in terms of character analysis. I'm sure this way of using companions is enjoyable to you but lets face it, it really isn't the way most people are using them and can come across as somewhat excessive. Though having a role-play justification is an improvement, I look forward to seeing more of that instead of the usual "hahaha, I torture Bastian what you going to do about it" which is usually my exposure to such 'role-play'.

I use all my available companions, I haven't gotten around to unlocking Isobel yet but will eventually. Mirri was my favorite over Bastian, but for some reason he just seems to like me more than she does and despite hardly being out his rapport maxed out and he won me over. Right now I'm using Ember a lot though. I just unlocked her and she's easy to have around, I can even bring her to the DB sanctuary.
