We'll see. The idea that a companion has to be (at least potentially) sexually attractive and can't be, well, just a (same-sex) friend, seems strange to me - but I'd accept that as a matter of taste, I guess.

Any casual visit to the modding pages of Skyrim makes it fairly clear that some people see it as a sort of dating sim. Which is, as you said, a matter of taste. I can live with that, I'm also guilty of fantasising about some of my fictional companions from various games. What I can't understand is those who see Bastian's fictional existence as an affront to their own gender identity, which would be hilarious if it wasn't also disturbing in the way it manifests.

I agree with you. And to add a thing: I find argumentations like "I'm a man so of course I naturally like women" quite irritating too. It might be an individual truth for the majority of people, and that's fine. It's still a bit weird that even in the 21st century some people don't seem to acknowledge that LGBT+ people exist (of maybe they do, but find them unnatural then).

They don't have to be sexually attractive but if they are I imagine they would be a lot more fun to have around. That's why I hope we get some good looking males to choose from next time so we have choices.

That's actually my favorite Khajiit hairdo. It's the one I originally picked for my first character, and I still use it on her.

Searing weapons is such a fun skill that Bastian is probably my most used companion.

It gives him an amazing flame atronach skin, which look great if he has a spiky outfit. It also turns any group member's companion into a lava monster. And of course it is a flat damage boost for everyone, but it is the cosmetic effect I love.

I used to use Bastian all the time, until Isobel came along. I just think she's much better at what she does (staying alive) than Bastian- and since I use three companions as quasi-tanks, the content dictates which one I use. Mirri is a healer, so I rarely use her. Ember is my go-to for nefarious activities, Isobel is my companion for dealing with most everything else, including soloing world bosses. Bastian, sadly, has been relegated towards the back and sees little use.

I see a lot of hate for Bastian in my guild forums, and here, but man, I love the guy.

He is an essential tank for me when farming dungeons, no matter who I'm playing. I enjoy his kindness, and his voice which I find soothing. He has a line that makes me happy every time I hear it:

"I like to think fate puts us in dark places because it's our job to be a light there."

Also, the "Are you hurt?!" line gets me all fluttery XD

That said, he spends a lot of time looking up, at nothing. ;)

I'm digging Isobel as well, though she's annoying for my vampire characters. Her laugh of delight when we go into battle is just awesome.

But I think Bastian will always be my favorite because he's steadfast and true and cares about everyone.

... except bandits, because screw those guys. XD

Excellent post! Bastian is a valorous fighter and a very kind and empathic companion.

I use all the companions and Bastian has had to give up the tank role to our Isobel and has instead taken up a two-handed maul to slay the baddies with.

Depends on the character. I have Bastian as the primary companion for two of my characters: A Breton templar and necromancer. Bastian fits the templar excellently because I play her as a similar kind of do-gooder and because he acts as a decent dps boost for the tanky character. As for the necromancer, well, I like the ironic contrast. It's funny to mow baddies down with the spooky scythe and the skull toss while Bastian acts all heroic next to the character. As a player, I do also like Bastian's personality and voice lines in moderate doses.

Thanks! Constant fighting, I see. That explains it. I don't level them deliberately but just take them with me whatever I'm doing, so they level much slower (I won't complain though because I'm not aiming for fast levelling). I have Isobel for weeks now and she's just reached level 13 or 14.

one major problem companions have is they only get xp from kills, so any other sources of xp (dolmens completion bonus, exploration, questing, etc) all dont count towards the companions xp

companions also get a % of your kill xp, which is why xp scrolls, and other things such as training trait, will work for them (a fully optimized companion xp build is full training, using heartland conquerer set to double the bonus on the weapon along with 150% xp scroll)

if you used the 150% scroll and training trait build during a double xp event, it would take no time at all to max lvl them using the arena method (i prefer the arena because the xp is pretty high, and it is instanced so you dont have to worry about sharing mobs with other people such as a public dungeon)

For some reason the forum allows some really vile comments on Bastian related threads. I've seen things stay up that really should have been nixed straight away. All you can do is report them but some things take multiple reports when they really shouldn't have to. Which really feeds back into the impression that Zos does not give a stuff about Bastian as character and the players who prefer him.

Clearly, going by some of the things Gina and other devs has said in streams, which has been brought up in other discussions about Bastian.

I love him. And those tattoos were such a spicy surprise! (I want to know the story).

What’s this about him not receiving updates? I’ve only maxed him out. Have the other companions been getting updates and he hasn’t?

Funny how every thread asking for feedback from players who actually use Bastian as a companion always devolves into the same old comments from people who have no interest in him as a companion. It's nearly been two years after Blackwood's release ..maybe... don't know....don't a use a companion you don't like and leave those who do like to use said companion to discuss things without having to wade through a sea of comments that add exactly zero to the conversation. Bastian fans don't go into other companion threads and bombard those who like other companions with 'ugh, hate this companion' so why is it acceptable here?

Yes, even Mirri has had more dialogue added from what I understand - Bastian has had nothing since Blackwood as well as continuing to have issues going right back to release (still missing from the Blackwood 'after party'). He has lines that were present in pts that simply do not work on live, whole sections of his personality were taken out and given to Isobel (his crafting rapport sections) and every request to get updates for him is conveniently ignored by the devs. It's shoddy in the extreme.

That stinks! I had no idea and now have mild FOMO. Bastion definitely deserves more content. I figured we’d get a second quest detailing his training in magic with that named (but not in game?) NPC.

    OMG me too!

First time I noticed it when I was playing with his costume it was a wee shock. I was all 'Waaaait a minute, what the heck?!'

Immediately plonked him in the Dark Shaman costume (no hat) so I could admire them :) Now he's in something much more befitting his character.

But it's always there, flashed before my eyes, every time he pops in :D

Yeah it's really really bad. Despite the vitriol his threads attract on the forums, I see so many players with Bastians in game as well as there being a steady, happy little fanbase around him as a character with players creating fan art, stories and discussions about his history/story. Players just enjoying themselves really. He has so much potential for story telling, for some really interesting environmental lines but instead we get significantly less dialogue than every other character while having to put up with a pretty dismissive attitude about it from the top.

I mostly use Bastian, and he's the only companion that I have fully leveled, though if/when I finally level Isobel I'll probably use her as well, because as a dps, the tanky companions are the most helpful for me. Personality-wise, Mirri is my favourite, and she's the next closest to leveling, but usually when I run around in the overland I forget to activate a companion, and if I'm doing a WB or dungeon I bring Bastian, so the others are leveling pretty slowly. I don't mind Bastian so much, sometimes he's very cheesy and preachy, and some of his lines are annoying, like when you cast an ultimate, but he's OK for the most part, plus I like his voice acting when he says 'hello, what's this' when you find heavy sacks, and like another person mentioned, when he says 'are you hurt?'.

i love the guy, and use him all the time.
i love his nature, his demeanor... He's all kind and stuff, then busts out with passionate war cries and victory cries, "THAT'S how we do things in Daggerfall!"

He's deep, and thoughtful... "I like to think fate puts us in dark places because it's our job to be a light there." Favorite quote.

He helps me find heavy sacks if i happen to miss them, by stopping and staring at them, "Hellooooo, what's this?"

He's got a sexy full body tatt that was a surprise to see, and his voice... ommagosh, i could listen to him all night. Only thing that woulda made him better woulda been a british accent. lol

Well I'm sending this description to the companions team. They are going to love this.
