Don't call the police on someone experiencing a mental health crisis unless they pose a serious threat to the safety of people around them. Like an actual -credible- threat. Police kill people during "mental health checks" all the time. Stop putting people in even more danger. I say this as someone who deals with suicidal ideation and mental illness for my whole life. Stop "calling the cops". We're not committing a crime.

I don't know what a sad country you live in, but I feel sorry for you and your people.

I am a police officer from the Czech Republic (EU) and I find such generalizing statements quite insulting.

In my more than 15 years of service I have never done any such thing. Actually, I have helped quite a few people in very difficult situations. Some you may not even be able to imagine. The police has the means to locate the person in trouble and help them.

@Watchdog Most likely a USA post. I assure you it's not meant as an insult, we just have had fear of our police beaten into us very deeply and we are terrible at knowing how things are in other countries. Quick and dirty quote from a US article comparing our police to other countries: "Researchers estimate that one in ten police calls in the United States is related to mental health. Approximately 25 percent of people shot and killed by police in 2018 were experiencing mental health crises."

this may be one of the more revealing comments yet written about the environment within the US...

beautiful country, lots of opportunities for many...lots and lots of really good people...

all that glitters ain't gold though here...

what that person wrote whom you responded to, is tragically very true...

    Hello,

For reporting threats of harm in situations like these, there is a "Real World Threat" category for reports both in-game and on the Elder Scrolls Online Help site. To file a report under that category on the Help Site, select "Report Player" followed by the platform, then "Real World Threat". Please provide as much detail on the situation as possible. These reports are given the highest priority, and the Support staff make an effort to review reports in this category within the first hour.

A new Support article will be posted with this information on Monday.

Don't you think this thread should have been closed sooner. The most productive conversation now should be between a mental health professional and the person in trouble.

Its great you have that option, but please be aware of potential "swatting" on this. Like, there is no doubt in my mind some people would absolutely enjoy making false reports on people they dont like in this. I hope there is a big punishment in such a case, but also that there wont be any problem in real life before you (ZOS) is absolutely sure the threat is real.

I would hate police knocking on my door because of a false claim someone made because i won fight in cyrodiil.

I get that they think police will help, and sometimes maybe they are correct. Maybe you'll get that mythical "good cop", but a lot of the times you do get treated like a criminal. When a cop shows up when you're going psychotic or manic or something it doesn't calm you down. It escalates the situation immediately. Frankly it is absolutely terrifying. It's a mixture of the mentally ill person already being volatile, and police just not being the ones who should be dealing with such situations. The issue is our society doesn't want to address the hard issue of mental health, and so the suffering just increases.

I just wanted to give an opposing viewpoint as someone with personal experience in the matter. Sometimes I guess, yeah, you do have to call the police, but a lot of times it can really just escalate a situation. I can tell you I have never physically hurt another person or threatened another person in my life, and I pray that it always stays that way.

That heavily depends on your country and how well police officers are trained. If you are from the US you have one of the least trained forces in the western world. Most european countries train their forces well, even for such situations.

You need to take a step back and realize that his comments weren't about you.

The situation over here (the US), which has been especially exacerbated since 2013, and even more so over the past few months of this year, is increasingly bad regarding police brutality against certain sectors of the civilian population.

This extends into the realm of how "authorities" deal with mental health issues. In regard to that poster's comments, there was a case here just last week, in the state of Utah, wherein a mother called for help for her 13 year-old autistic son who was having a crisis.

The police came to their house. They were warned beforehand that the child was unarmed and that he was autistic and experiencing a breakdown. The child, due to his illness, became even more agitated when they entered the house because he didn't understand what was happening and was scared. He tried to run away.

So the police shot him, multiple times.

An unarmed 13 year-old child with a mental disability. He survived, but is still in the hospital and may be facing the rest of his life with the injuries afflicted upon him.

That is the type of situation that the poster you responded to was speaking of.
There is a very real problem in this country right now which [justifiably] causes people to hesitate to call the police when they need help.

A sad and tragic case that was widely reported in the UK too.

I would help if posters took into account that they are talking to an international audience and that what is appropriate in one area may not be so in another.

Hence ZOS's post is the best starting point followed by a call to your local support agency if there is one.

In most of the US, police are far more likely to escalate the situation than anything. It’s quite dangerous to call the police for mental health checks.

Filing a false police report is a crime and can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. The odds that anyone would do such a thing are pretty low.

It is currently very popular in the US to bash the police. In every recent incident the media has reported on, they have been wrong.
