Placed here so there are no sacrifices to the gameplay UI and compatible with many different peripherals or devices.
This concept is to please and compromise those who want text chat and those who don't want text chat.
It's a common ground approach and pages back propose unique ways to manage or handle this proposal
Please let's continue this type of discussion and stop commenting on why "we personally" think, want, need, dislike, don't need and don't want things.
The purpose is not to convince Zenimax or another user why we may want or not want something.
The goal is to have a discussion in efforts to solidify a sound way for such a proposal to work without changing anything else other than what's added within the social tab.

Really dude?
There should be no comprimise. They need to add text chat. It will literally only enhance the gameplay. There is no other way around it. There is no comprimise. It is either add text chat, or watch as the console version become a ghost town.
Advice to everyone. There's two posters in this and every thread about text, character names, and remapping of controls , essentially anything console related , who think Zenimax can do no wrong , who think they speak for all console players , and who think they know better. They go back and forth attempting to "compromise" and then to troll.
Just remember they are two regular accounts , who basically try and act important or as if they matter more. One tries to act like some insider know it all , the other trolls attempting to get people to argue more.
Both are jokes. Simply ignore them , don't let them bait you into arguing too much , as its what they want. And I'm not "naming them" because heaven forbid they get called out. But I think it's easy enough to figure out which one is the know it all fake insider who tells others what to talk about , and the other one a contradictory troll.
Might as well just not give them any attention.

Well as much as I agree with you that we absolutely do need text chat, I also just have to ask, what specifically do you object to in this particular compromise solution being discussed?
You say the game needs text chat, and thats what it offers, so what exactly is your issue with it?

Just add square link item in chat at the bottom along with the other options there.

The guy wants the text chat to be either comprised of quick chat options or to be in a secondary screen hidden in the start menu.
That is a comprise that is not needed. Just give us the same chat pc has.
On PC Im pretty sure my box fades with inactivity and comes back when active again. But I admit I have little experience with console mmorpg games, all mine have been on PC, so I have to ask how this would be done?I want a standard text chat box that stays up at all times if I want to read it all the time while out adventuring and soloing etc ? I don't want some silly iPhone app on another screen , don't want something that has to be brought up if I want to read ongoing zone conversations or to type myself. Just as every other major console mmorpg has, I want text chat communication to be able to use all the time while I listen to the game also. Make it where you can turn it off and never see it, just as voice chat should be able to be disabled 100%, and also let those who want to use both use both. How anyone wants to deny someone a way to communicate that they never once would be forced to use I do not understand. Also it is very false that ESO is just doing it the "Console way". Other major mmorpg on consoles have standard text chat boxes. I don't want something that is "sometimes there" , neither do several others in this thread. I want to be able to talk and communicate all the time while adventuring just as I have in PC and console mmo's going back to the 90's.

For example, Im running around killing things and have my text chat set to zone just running there in the corner of my screen. Then I see someone is selling the Sword of Death Ive been looking for a long time. Now on PC, I just swing the mouse over, right click on the guys name, select 'whisper', set the cursor in the reply box, type a message to him and send.
Now on Xbox I cant right click, heck I dont even have a mouse to swing over, and no empty buttons on the controller that can be assigned to activate the text box and switch from zone to whisper, so Im not sure how this can be done without bringing up another screen for replies?

On Xbox One, when opening your inventory, the X button is already in use for 'Assign' (to assign consumables to your quick select), however the Y button is for Actions. When Y is hit, another menu appears with things such as Destroy, Enchant, Charge, etc.. I dont see why Link to Text Chat can not be listed there as well, and when selected it can open the interactable text chat box in the Social tab with the selected item already linked, then one can just type in WTS, price, etc and send..
Also, on the Xbox, it seems none of the 'letter' buttons work when a quick select wheel is open. I dont know if there is a reason behind that or not, however after hitting 'menu' button, Y is assigned to voice chat settings. I suppose it could be possible to make this into just 'Chat', and when clicked then one would be given a choice between Voice or Text chat settings, but then again I doubt this would save any more time than just going to 'Social' then "Text Chat'.
Other than these minor differences between button assignments on Xbox and PS4, I have to say your ideas seem pretty good and workable to me. I just hope someone at ZOS might be paying attention as well..

if you're using a keyboard ... hit "enter" type /w (whisper) or /t (tell)
example /t (playername) I want to buy your sword of death
guy answers /r how much are you offering
you answer /r 1billion gold
/r =reply BTW
if you not using a keyboard going with my suggestion you open up quickchat/emote wheel window & hit a button, square for example on the PS4 ... that would allow you to use whatever you have set up for text chat imput, virtual keyboard, smartglass etc to have access to imput text in the text chat window.

We can be united behind that as well you know. Changing a demand to a compromise because ZOS hasnt responded to it is ridiculous. If they are going to implement a compromise they are more than capable of coming up with the idea themselves and implementing it (I hope).
The real issue here remains their total lack of communication on the issue. And that is why I continue to log in elsewhere. I want to come back. All it takes from them is a word either way.
Too much to ask I guess.

There's isn't a technical reason , was in and they took it out.
And agree with the idea we don't have to agree to dilute or compromise what we are asking for. The two or three who ah e deemed themselves the speakers for console players ( laughable ) throw out an idea and we are supposed to be thankful.
Shows even more delusion on their part.
They know nothing more than any of us and can have their compromise 4th screen text wheel on a mirror reflected off a toaster if they want to suggest that.
Most of us just want the normal text chat window ( that they can turn off and never see ) every other major mmorpg on consoles has.
( deep down it just burns them lots of us would be happily communicating with text chat all over the zone for some reason )

Sorry, I was just offering suggestions
If you look at my post history you can see I have been arguing/asking for text chat to be put back in since we 1st found out they took it out just before the console beta.
I never implied I was the voice of the console player, I just offered counterpoints & agruements to the anti-text crowd.

Good for you for being open about this. I too have a form of S.A.D except it's Seasonal Affective Disorder where during the winter months I tend to hibernate both physically and socially. For quite an extroverted person I find myself choking up and stuttering during any uneasy situations such as talking to strangers that may not even have mics in faction capitals and you can hear this in other people's choices when they do the sameAce_of_Destiny wrote: »Lately I have been spending more time in these forums than I have in the game.
Why?
Because I love ESO, and these forums are in text.
I have S.A.D. (Social Anxiety Disorder). (Yes, I know I shouldn't share this with internet "freaks".)
So, I don't like to HAVE to wear my headset, and verbally communicate with people all the time.
Before I play I take a look at my friend's list to see who else is playing.
And, if there are a lot of my "friends" in the game at the time, and I am not in the mood to talk verbally, I just don't log in.
Because as soon as friends/guildmates see a person log in they usually send a PSN Message, or ingame mail, saying something like; "party chat", or "guild chat".
I am an honest person.
But, sometimes I just have to lie and reply with "my headset is charging".
I HATE LYING!
And, I can't use that excuse all the time.
So, instead of lying to people, I just don't play as much as I would like to.
I have played MMORPGs going back as far as the Ultima Online Beta.
Text Chat has served me well.
The option to use text chat in this game would allow me to play it much more than I currently can.
Thank you for your time, and sorry for "sharing".

. At the same time even when I'm in a better state text chat is super important and really needs to be implemented in eso for consoles. The best console mmo I've played so far is Warframe. Why? Because of text chat. Day two of playing warframe I was in a guild with like minded individuals and worked and played with them cohesively. I've got near two months and 400 hours on ESO and I've done all of 8 dungeons, 5 of which only basic dungeons with no proper healers or tanks or mics in a three man team.

So building on what you started, what if one could enable the text box through the social menu, and it could be set up through there as to area, guild, group, whisper etc, set text size etc-- BUT when closed, an on-screen text chat box would appear in the corner so one could still play the game. Then if one felt the need to text or reply to someone, they could return to the social menu to do so. Basically the box on the game screen would be view only, and interaction or adjustment to it would have to be done in the social menu...Oh and would have to include zone chat, I dont know what your issue is with that, but its my main reason for wanting text chat. This would be a compromise I guess I could live with..

This is A LOT like an idea i've had during a previous PM conversation. So basicly, you have the chatbox. That chatbox could be accessible by pressing enter if you have a keyboard, just like in Neverwinter, DCUO and FFXIV. But If you don't own a keyboard, you also can access that chatbox through Social menu. The way I've seen it goes like this:
If you have a keyboard:
Enter - Type - Enter
If you don't own a keyboard:
Go in menu -> Social -> Chatbox -> select the chatbar. That will display visual keyboard.
As for linking and other stuff:
Go in menu -> Social -> Chatbox.
From there your control is all about the chatbox.
-Selecting the text bar will open the visual keyboard as previously mentionned.
-Using Triangle (or x-box equivalent) while entering text would open inventory to link items.
-Using the Right stick up and down lets you scroll up and down.
-Using the D-Pad let's you highlight messages one by one to select for quick reply or watch linked items.
-Using X (or x-box equivalent) on a line does a quick reply to the sender.
-Using Triangle (or x-box equivalent) on a line shows linked items.
-Using L1 and R1 (or x-box equivalents) switches between tabs
-Using square (or X-box equivalent) on a line opens a pop-up menu with:
-Reply
-Invite to group
-Invite to guild
-Add to friend list
-Add to Ignore list
-Using Circle (or x-box equivalent) Gets you out of chatbox mode and back to playing the game.
And since going through the menu adds unnecessary steps, the " - " key of the keyboard could go straight to the "chatbox mode" in the eventuality that you owned a keyboard (and plugged it before turning on your X-box for you x-box guys).
They can also make it an option to make it either disabled, only visible in the social menu, always on screen, or vanishing.
So there you have it. There is no more reason to say that the gamepad is aleready fully mapped.
