ESO and VLC conflict

pavelcherepanskyrwb17_ESO
I didn't put this discussion in tech support forum because it's not related to something being wrong with the game itself. It's just every time I start ESO and not close VLC, because I don't want to loose where I finished watching movie, VLC crashes. Every single time.

I'm wondering what could be the reason for such conflict - is it the fact that I use a VAIO laptop with switchable graphics Intel HD 4000 (i think) and Radeon HD7650 and when I run ESO the system automatically switches to the higher performing GPU (being Radeon, of course) and that causes VLC to crash?

Anyone tech savvy here?

hmm i do the same but I am using Alien lap top with Nvidia/Intel and no issues with me. Could be the drivers are doing it.

I have the same issue with VLC media player, when i used to play WoW I would turn on a movie, adjust window sizes on my 39 inch monitor so both the movie and the game were on screen for me to enjoy in tandem, but I cannot in ESO because of the conflict.

Yeah, could be drivers as mine are pretty old. I'd love to update them but Sony hasn't released anything in a while and my GPU is incompatible with normal Radeon drivers which sucks...

If you have an AMD card, then AMD has the drivers you need. I've never heard of any kind of GPU (for laptop or desktop) that requires a company like Sony to make special drivers.

And the latest VAIO driver is from 2013 and with Sony selling the company to Lenovo I'm not sure when I'd see the next update :sunglasses:

You are on a laptop and heat can be an issue, meaning you should avoid using the HD4000 for anything graphics intensive unless you have an app like lucidmvp that allows you to use both the cpu and gpu together for efficiency (btw the older lucidmvp versions don't work with ESO I believe).

I'm not 100% but I suspect the issue may be memory related. What are your specs? GPU memory and RAM?

Also, my preference either way would be to just quickly make a new txt doc with the rough playback time (or take a mental note) and close VLC every time, especially on a laptop - it's not worth it.

Mental note works. I do that with the vevo songs, iTunes, youtube reviews and VLC. Yeah I have attention span problems and love to go back when I feel like it.
People keep telling me they're gonna buy me an ale. They never do.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Elves.

It's 2 GB for GPU and 8 GB RAM.

It doesn't bother me too much, it's a minor glitch, but if it can be fixed, why not

    Other questions:

What's the version of VLC you are running?

    What's your Virtual Memory size?
    [Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings->Advanced Tab->Performance->Settings->Advanced Tab->Virtual Memory]

What version of Windows are you running?

Do you get an error message when VLC crashes? If so, what is it?

It's VLC 2.1.3 Rincewind, I've got 8 GB of Virtual memory and I use Win 7 Ultimate x64.

Uninstall the video card via the system and then install the Radeon drivers. Dell did the same thing to me. Get rid of the driver that says it's a sony driver.

This happens in true full screen mode for me, I had to switch to borders less full screen (the original default).

Will switchable graphics still work fine with normal AMD driver? I use it a lot when traveling and I'd hate to see Radeon eating all my battery.

    Try this:

In VLC, go to Tools -> Preferences -> Video -> Output.

Change the default selection from "Automatic" to "OpenGL video output." Save and exit VLC.

Reopen VLC, go back to Output and see whether it has changed (just in case it reverts; if it doesn't, good).

Test whether VLC still crashes on game launch.

You, sir, are a legend! Didn't crash this time!

    Thanks everyone for your input!

So for normal junk my Intel graphics does that work, for gaming is the only time the Nvidia kicks in, but then again lap top was built with gaming in mind. I didn't have any issues when I kicked my XPS system over to the Nvidia drivers but then again it only had 1 GPU in it.

Also I don't think it's which chip is being used as much as what you are doing when it comes to battery life.

Agreed. Yet still watching a movie with Ivy Bridge's embedded HD 4000 doing graphics processing and Radeon working on the same task will yield different results in terms of battery life

    I did some tests
VLC 2.1.3 (Ricewind) plus ESO 1.1.5:
When a Video is running or paused in VLC while you tab or move onto the ESO character selection screen, VLC bugs out.

    Solution:
Set ESO to use "Windowed Fullscreen" instead of "Fullscreen" mode (real fullscrean was added with Craglorn and made the new default). You need to do that anyway in order to use your second screen (in real fullscreen second screen is black).

I can confirm this works on a Windows 7 x64 system with dual NVDIA GTX 560s and VLC 2.1.3

I can listen to music and/or watch videos with VLC on the 2nd display while I play ESO on my primary display without any issue.
