Snipped for length.. but I honestly didn't mention Diablo 3 cause I was only thinking in MMO mindset. I still think FFXIV:ARR takes the cake though.. With Sim City coming in second.. and then maybe Diablo 3. Basically games where I wasn't even allowed to play for a very prolonged period of time after purchasing them.. with Sim City throwing in the bonus of also deleting some cities.

I found Diablo III to be fun and entertaining. I footnote that with I have never played Diablo II.

I only buy/play mmo's that interest me, and in 15 years of MMO gameplay, this game is the first out of 2 dozen subscription based mmo's that I have unsubscribed before playing for 2 months, and I am a die-hard elder scrolls fan, who will tear anyone apart who insults the Elder Scrolls franchise (honestly though, who in these forums wasn't a fan before ESO), and yet I find this MMO to be an alpha release at best, especially when it is supposed to represent the elder scrolls.

Sadly... ESO is my worst gaming experience to this day (not counting games I gave up for lack of interest). The game itself could have been a lot of fun but the temperamental launcher, gutless servers (+ support) and poorly balanced skills make it more frustrating than fun. And I have been playing video games since they were invented so the competition for "worst experience" title in my book was a fierce one!
Skyrim, Oblivion and the Fallout series, they were buggy too but the good thing was there always was a clever modder to fix the bugs - releasing the Creation Kit was a clever move. So I guess I'll still be buying Bethesda's games, Zenimax Online, I'll think twice.

My comment is more of a newbie mistake:

    Ultima Online: "Welcome to Feluccia"

    1. Other players doing something "seemingly" innocent that turned you grey & got you murdered and looted.

    2. Dropping 50,000 gold on the ground at the bank and having another player scoop it up ... had forgotten about "weight carried cap," etc.

    Otherwise, I <3'ed UO B)

I found it fun as well. I found FFXIV:ARR fun too.. my patience is pretty amazing though, mainly cause I've been going through game launches for the past 11 or so years. Diablo III made the list because it required an online connection, and when it launched it was unable to connect for a very, very large portion of the player base..and was kinda not real stable when it did connect. Not a bad game, just a bad launch. FFXVI:ARR gets the top for a ton of reasons.. I typed up a book (kay, not really.. but a ton) on the first page as to why.. but still had fun playing it when it was working right.

During the process, I was informed that my character was being kidnapped and forced into prostitution during my offline time.

What?!? That's insane! What on earth were the devs thinking???

It was, in fact, part of the Chinese game's free-to-play cash shop system. Paying customers could develop some game stats and skills while offline. Freebies did not, and this was explained in game as their capture by an enemy. It was also tied into some PvP system that I didn't stick around long enough to figure out. However unwise this seemed as game design, that was the scenario, and those were the rules.

That being said, "your character is being forced to become a prostitute" just isn't going to sit well with some players.

Its extremely sad . Had it been finished and had understandable itemization at launch we would have very different dynamic in the mmo industry.

The saddest thing is, Age of Conan has matured into a true fine game, with interesting combat mechanics and a full set of progression raids. The free-to-play game is quite playable all the way up to max level and two old-world raids. The mature rating helps make it unique. After City of Heroes died, it's been the game I go home to.

Hmm to name the worst gaming experience in my entire gaming life? (over 20 years).

    It is simple: Battlefield 4
    This is why:
    - Game wan not playable at launch (program stopped working, directx error) game for 110 EURO and I could not even play it!
    - When they fixed crashes sound bug sais hello! I am here to destroy your experience
    - Then I started some deathmatch to see how huns work etc... Oh man net code - that is how the community call it. The response between player and the server was absolutely terrible, dieing behind cover, shooting at standing player took full magazine just for sure, because if you burst only, you never know if it will be enough to kill.it is not good idea to rely on server that it will acknowlidge you hits, so you spray and pray.

Net code is nit fixed up to this date.

This is the first game that made me RAGE QUIT and ultimately delete it with account together. I have never ever played FSP game with such horrible hit detection and network communication. Anyone who pre orders further BF game is crazy.

Simple way to put it. Wildstar was my worse experience I have ever as an mmorpg it's a joke.

I'd have to go with this also.. 10 years ago maybe could have played it. but 2014.. no thx!

Many over 20+ years. DAOC with Trials of Atlantis. The sudden closing of some: Tabula Rasa and Vanguard. WoW in launch (months and months of technical problems) and finally it went with the Catacombs expansion. LOTRO when it went F2P and the game abruptly took a silly Mickey Mouse direction for people wanting to faceroll easy content to placate the 'super-casual masses' and that ended a wonderful 6 year experience overnight, that ranks as the worse, by far.

    Non-MMO: Dragon Age2 after the fantastic DA1.

P.S. The OP asked for NON-ESO experience, some of you can't either read or can't help yourselves.

Unfortunately, it happened in this game. I was one of the many who were incorrectly banned a while back. It's the first time anything like that has ever happened to me in over 10 years of mmo gaming. Receiving an "oops, we screwed up" mass mail and being unbanned didn't really make up for it either. :)

And yeah blah blah non-ESO moments - ok I'll give you being the first server in WoW to open the gates of AQ. After all the hard work and hours and hours put into it, we spent our entire night crashing and staring at loading screens because jackasses from other servers made level 1s and spammed our server the entire night.

    Age of Conan launch.

The game and servers were horribly unstable for weeks, it was one of the first DX10 MMOs(but didn't ship with it) and caused blue screens, crashes, and had terrible performance even on high end rigs.

The game is a perfect example of a bad launch reputation ruining a game forever. It was a decent game excluding the technical issues, and after years of patches it is an amazing game. But it is dead because of their launch reputation.

I cant even remember them all. wow has been one bad experience since wrath ended.

But OMG AOC!!! Had the most potential of any other mmo i had played at the time, and was equally the worst game i had ever played at the same time.

It was like installing an internet troll right on to your hard drive.

Well being banned incorrectly would suck and the purpose of stating "non-ESO" was to stop people whining about ESO, I figure if it's legitimate (and incorrectly being banned would definitely count) then no-harm, no-foul.

I've played various computer games since the mid-80's and I think one of the earliest ragings I had was a 20 minute multi-colour load (from cassette, y'understand) followed by ten minutes of RPG play and then crash. I have trouble remembering a lot of games let alone issues with them. Most of the games way back when were a lot less buggy, I suspect because getting sales was harder and the programming was much simpler. I think a lot of games have bugs these days simply because the programming is much more complex and it's almost impossible to catch them all and keep up with the hardware.
Oooh look, lot's of Butterflies! Wait! Butterflies? Get out of here Sheo, stop bugging me!

I always thought Sim City was just a myth SURE you bought the game and got a disc but all I thought there was, was a login screen and that was as far as the development team got.

the more memory the games started running on the bigger need for testing became, Know how many people probably tested Donkey Kong, one or two of the developers, that s for 8 bit memory. around the time of N64 is when we needed bigger dedicated teams that only work on testing and nothing else
