I would have been mad. It's a competitive thing. I wouldn't report you like a lil b though.

I've got to agree. I would have been annoyed but it definitely isn't against the rules if your an actual player and not script/bot. Social faux pas? Sure, but nothing more.

God forbid people should have any repercussions to failing other than waiting 5 seconds.

Of COURSE you should have gone for it if you were there and he messed up.

Knowing someone could take advantage of your mistakes makes a game exciting. I don't believe in griefing other players, but this is just part of the game.

I don't think this is rude.

I remember in the first week of the game on Stros M'kai me and another player tried to open a chest again and again by turns. It was actually quite fun, although I lost.

I guess it would be an unwritten law. I mean , would you cut in front of someone in a line because they were tying their shoe :\ ? Something else that some players do which infuriates me is when I have to battle some beast or bad guy for a chest or whatever , and while I'm battling away they sneak around and take the prize :# .... Thats just a lack of good home training :s ... Seriously

I see this as a game. If you were playing football and a person fumbled the ball, do you wait for him to pick it back up, or do you pick it up for your side?

What if there was no timer and no cool down? Two players get to the chest at the same time. The first one to activate it could then spend as long as they like trying to open it. Whittle down their lock picks to one, contact a friend or guild mate, and then wait for player two to leave.

    How fun.

I'm courteous, if I see a player going for a node or chest I walk away, they saw it first.

It was a master chest to me, so I thought he might mess up and I could try to pick it. As it turns out that is what happened.

I got the chest and started to walk away.

Next thing I know he is giving me a tell that he is going to report me for stealing his chest.

So, I guess the question is, is it a social faux pas to take a chest from another player? I know it is not against the rules and all that, but is it just rude in general?

    What do you guys think?

It depends. Was the other player still attempting the chest when you interacted with it? I would be very PO were someone to come up to a chest they could actively see I was attempting to open, and have that player open the chest and take the contents from under my nose, that, would be wrong, but if the other player gave up [ran out of lock-picks] and then you attempted it, that player has NO RIGHTS to complain. They gave up when they walked away or ran out of lock picks.

I would just have waited until he walked away or managed to open it. Nothing it contained would be worth the hassle of strained community relations. That being said it is not against the rules.

No way, his bad luck. If you F*** it up, which unless it's master you shouldn't, then you lose it. I've done this to people and had it done to me as well.

    Is it reportable?

No it isn't unless you exploit the environment to make him fail (yes I saw this happen already).

    Is it bad manners?

Yes it is. There is an unwritten rule in any MMO that you don't steal things after someone fought for them. Not a node, not a chest, not even a mob.

However, that unwritten rule many just ignore which is a shame and a reason why MMO communities are so hostile these days. Everyone only thinks about himself to secure the treasure as if he don't, someone else will come by and grab it.

    Nobody fought for anything.

He tried to pick a chest that was just out in the open. He failed so I tried next.

This is pretty common even when obtaining certain quest objectives. There has always been an unwritten rule that if someone is near, fighting mobs or attempting to unlock a chest as in this instance, the honourable thing to do is move on. Come back later.

There are people like the OP though that want validation for when they grab that chest or quest item from someone who is obviously there to do the same. A simple whisper goes a long way and would have kept the OP from coming here to create a thread

It would be rude to take a chest if another person was there first attempting to unlock it. If the other person gives up and walks away, then it is fair game. But as long as he is there, he should be allowed to attempt it as many times as he wishes.

Frankly, I am shocked that the OP even had to ask if what he did was a social faux pas. It seems fairly obvious to me that it was and, judging by the other responses, it was obvious to everyone else as well.

In your analogy, the guy trying to pick the lock was your teammate! You are supposed to help and support your teammates.

Now, in Cyrodiil, that is another story. If you saw someone from an opposing faction trying to get a node or somesuch, yeah go ahead and try to stop him.

The Dev's said they is there is a 1 second timer after you fail to pick a chest before you can try again to ALLOW other players to have a go. Its by design and his report will just be deleted.

That being said I still don't try to unlock a chest unless the first player has walked away because the loot in the chest is 99% of the time not really worth the time trying to unlock it, but the exp from opening the chest is worth it.

The OP did nothing wrong. Now if the first player was fighting the mob guarding the chest, and the OP jumped in and took the chest, now that would be rude but again, not against the rules, and nothing to report.

If that is true, my teammate should be happy one of us got the prize. We both worked on a solution, taking turns and I happen to come up on top.

Frankly, I don't see every other player in PvE as a teammate. I doubt most people do either.

My friends and guildmates, sure. People in my party, sure.

    A complete stranger? No.

I think that is a bit uncalled for. No need to call me a jerk or a D-bag. I was just asking for people opinions on what they think the right thing in their mind would be.

For a person who claims he would do the polite thing, you sure to like to be rude.

Apologies for the title of the thread portion of my post.

If you have played any MMO ever, especially WoW, then there has been etiquette about resolving this. If he beat you to it in a foot race then that settles it. I personally would have moved along.
