Horses. Gain stats through use?

My first horse, a common horse, after reaching level 50 has 40% speed, 11 stamina, and 26 capacity. So that means I apparently fed 26 times into capacity, 1 into stamina, and the rest which would be 22 times into speed. Tho that would mean my speed would have stopped at 37%, but its at 40% now. I really don't remember feeding into stamina at all either. I know for a fact that I fed 26 times into capacity because I wanted this to be a carry stuff horse.
I have a 2nd horse that I haven't really used but I am feeding. It is currently level 30. I have fed it exactly 20 times into stamina and thus have 40 stamina, and the rest is all going into speed. It is currently at 24% speed. Feeding it the last 20 times will put my horse at 44% speed, 40 stamina, 0 capacity.
My first horse looks like I fed it more than 49 times, and I am sure that I didn't somehow manage to do that. So do horses gain stats as they are used?

I fed my horse entirely with apples so it's sitting at 65% speed. When I leveled it to 49 with an apple, I gained 1% speed, 1 stamina, and 1 capacity. I'm not exactly sure why, but I wasn't complaining. This is where your extra stats are coming from.0 -

✭Same happened to me, I fed my speed horse 100% Apples and my mule horse 100% (the other thing for inventory spaces) and both horses have +1 of the other 2 choices. I'm also not complaining but it is a strange bug.0 -

✭Its not a bug, when any horse 'dings' L49, it gets a bonus 1 speed, 1 stamina and 1 carry.
So at L48 if you feed it one apple, it will ding L49 and have 2 extra speed, 1 stamina and 1 carry.3 -
poodlemasterb16_ESO✭✭✭✭✭Yup my witches level 50 Imperial went through that too. the 48/49 change put points in all three. I have a 50 25 1 horse with a nice saddle blanket now.
Does not matter how fast it is, if there is no stamina anything will knock you off it. It's why I have 25 there. She can ride through quite a bit of damage from various sources before she gets knocked off.0
