Depends on the ancient race.
Dwemer for example would be near impossible to introduce, the lore is all but one disappeared, and that one remaining Dwemer was a ghost. None have been seen since their disappearance at all.
Kothringi and Imga might be doable, Aylieds would certainly be doable, all you need is a few isolated villages which haven't had much contact with the world.
Deadra would be much harder to justify, very few are independant of their princes, fewer still view Humans/Elves/Khajiit/Argonians with anything more that bemused hostility (we are toys to them, and they enjoy seeing how we break).

But there are only two distinct species outside of "human" and "elf". Something different from "human" and "elf" along the lines of Khajit and Argonians would be nice, because ape variants get super boring, super quick. Humans are just shaven apes, after all, and elves are nothing but humans with pointy ears and (in this case) funky eyeballs.
More sapient non-apes the merrier, please.

I usually pick the short races in MMO's (the first iteration of "Lizelle" was a Gnomish Magician in EQ1) I was disappointed I didn't have any options in this one... though I did bring the slider all the way down on my Brenton, it's just not the same
