Atrocious Companion AI

Title says it all. The companions you sometimes get to "assist" you in quests are completely USELESS. All they do is follow you around without actually doing jack squat, absolutely appalling ZOS. I haven't seen much discussion about this topic which is why I've made this one to shine some light on an issue that should have been fixed a long, long time ago.
The worst AI of them all is companions that do damage, healer companions are not that bad.

If they aren't going to bother doing the AI properly then they shouldn't bother adding them at all.

TheAmu✭✭✭In the final main story quest, all the companions go with you. For the most part they helped me. But there was one battle against a particular semi-boss where the four of them just stood there watching me like one of them said, "No. Stand back. This isn't our fight."
Meanwhile I was frantically mashing buttons screaming, "The hell it isn't! Help me you morons!"0
