    Skyrim
Technically, I should have probably picked pre-Morrowind, because I did once play Arena at a friend's house. I didn't have a PC of my own at the time (I had an Amiga back then), so I never picked it up for myself.

I never really looked at the series again until Skyrim. When I picked up Skyrim I was hooked, and I've played through everything in it, including all DLC and even a bunch of mods that added new lands and dungeons and so on. I've since played Oblivion as well.

I'd like to play Morrowind, but I just can't get past how terrible the graphics look now. Everyone says it's got a great story (which I pretty much know all of, because I'm a bit of a lore junky and I've spent a lot of time exploring the 2 wikis), and that it was a ton of fun to play, but I just can't get past how bad it looks compared to modern games. It's weird, because I don't get that feeling from most games older than Morrowind (like Star Control 2, as people may be able to guess from my user name), but Morrowind and others like it are in that uncanny valley for me, and I just can't get past the graphics.

Morrowind was my first TES. I still prefer it to the others for a lot of reasons. I do recognise that Skyrim is the most polished game in the series in many ways. I do not like Oblivion much.

I have since tried the early ones. Not much fun now, to be honest. Like many older games they are brutally hard early on. Was more fun to read up on them than actually play them.

Watched my best friend play Oblivion on the PS3 but never got into it myself because I just don't enjoy console games, not since my Atari (2600 to you, but it was just Atari back when I had one ). I played Skyrim and loved it which really whet my appetite for ESO.

I like how the choices are Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, ESO...oh and the other games. =p Morrowind was my first TES game but it's definitely not my favorite, that would be Daggerfall. I just love that game, warts and all. I've noticed a lot of complaints about the dumbing down of the series, especially about Skyrim. Even though I'm a fan of Daggerfall and it's character creator, I honestly love Skyrim's more streamlined take on attributes and skills.

That, I suppose, is true. I started playing Daggerfall years ago but the graphics were so bad, I didn't actually return to finish it until I was deeply hooked by other TES games.

My first significant TES experience was Morrowind. Yeah, I thought the graphics sucked, but I loved - and still love - the open world, sandbox concept. I love exploring and finding things - even all these years later - that I feel as I've never seen. I loved being able to make it as hard (with house rules) or as easy (remember Reflect? Rings of Life?) as I wanted. I gave hundreds of hours and three years of my life (and more) to Morrowind. There are entire parts of the game burned into my memories.

I even own Arena, but the thousand plus hours of TES time have primarily been spent in Morrowind GOTY, Oblivion GOTY, and Skryim.

    Oblivion
I said Oblivion because that's when I really decided the series was pretty cool. I did buy the Tribunal pack (or something like that) before I played Oblivion (which I believe included Morrowind and maybe some expansions or previous games)... But seriously, it was too dated. I'm sure for it's time is was super awesome (just like the 8-track or VHS players) but I'm not one of those wannabe "elites" who thinks <deep sarcasm> "all old games are soooooo much better than anything current".

    Uh huh... sure.

    Skyrim
Skyrim baby. Loved Skyrim, but the other games I have with Anthology leave me dry - not their fault, it has to do with age of the programmes, both in graphics and philosophy (why does that heavy armour dude jump my face in Daggerfall, when I just want to get out of the starting area and I can't have godmode?)

But Skyrim was so engrossing, I skipped most of the Battlefield Barrens patch to play it, because mindless grinding for cosmetic crap is boring. I like stories.

First played the original game way way back where you had to swing the mouse around madly to hit stuff with a weapon....

ESO, to me, really isn't elder scrolls. Sure it has some of the look and the lore of the series but it isn't the same. ES games until this one is all about sandbox and ESO is nothing like that; it's a typical theme park MMO where you follow the bread crumbs and have little to no impact on the world. Want to climb that mountain in skyrim? Sure you can do that...but in ESO there is invisible walls every where funneling you like a rat in a maze. Meh.

Still, I do find this game sort of enjoyable as an MMO but as an ES game it falls short...really really short.

What a silly thing to say.

Anyway, Daggerfall was my first TES game and I loved it, despite never finishing the main story due to it bugging out. Remind you of anything? :p The rat sound effect always takes me back to the first dungeon, even when I hear it in other games (of that era of course, sound effects are a bit more sophisticated nowadays).

Morrowind I didn't love quite so much. Though it is the one I have played the most. Oblivion I didn't like at all. Skyrim was OK, but a little too slick for my liking. And probably because the size of the map was hyped to the heavens, I found it disappointingly small.

I'm loving ESO, but my flatmate, who is a lover of Oblivion but hated Skyrim, is giving it a miss.

I got swept up in the Skyrim craze, and now I've played through all the main games minus Arena; I'll get to it when I get bored of ESO. I would've played Battlespire and Redguard, but they're a bit harder to get unfortunately. They should be released with an anthology imo.

I played Elder Scrolls back in the early days hoping for something similar to one of my favourite games ever (The Eye of the Beholder series), elder scrolls: arena and Elder scrolls Daggerfall not exactly the best of games in the world, but then when Morrowind came out I was quick to buy it up and I enjoyed many many months of it.

The game depth, the extreme amount of space to explore the skills everything about it screamed play me more. Then with subsequent releases I bought them and got the same pleasure.

This is a game I will play for a long time to come yet and it doesn't matter if there are bots or some stuff is broken the game will carry on, those who do complain about little things spoiling their fun are obviously just people who want a mmo and not people who love the game and the series.

Oh, I was so expecting a pleasant walk down memory lane, and then I have to see the OP talking about "fanboys".

    Such a disappointment.

    We can still do that.

I started with Oblivion, did some exploring, leveled up via their backwards system, quickly killed that armored woman and stole her heavy armor + soul sucking sword and then kind of owned every encounter thereafter. Never finished, since I was OP - and, apparently, if you do that, you just avoid leveling up and you retain your OP throughout the game.

Just makes me want it bad...

I played Morrowind on original Xbox first, but I didn't finish it or even get in-depth much at all. The one I delved deep into was Oblivion, and has been my favorite ever since. Played Skryim, and meh. I got to where I tolerated it. TESO has been fun, just experiencing TES world and immersing myself in it. However, caught in the speed lvl early on and even at vet lvls where I just speed lvl when I'm not doing pvp really has killed it for me, and I am ashamed. ;( I'll be playing over it with another character for sure, to savor every bit of lore and script. I plan to get all lorebooks and read what I can out of them.

Yeah I know other people that use Photoshop also  It was a joke but most people who play ESO never played Arena or Dagerfall when they came out mostly due to the fact that games where harder to get distributed, a smaller market, and not being as well known of a company. Skyrim sold... (what was it something like 20 million copies?) No way that Arena or Daggerfall would have even a fraction of those numbers, and the average player age being 25-35 but the average age of the player who would have played Arena would be around 45 or so puts the likeliness of someone playing either one at a very small percentage.

So not that no one has ever played either one but the percentage being so low I doubt that its 30% of the people here.

I'm 50 now. My generation was the first of the computer gamers, we are starting to retire now. Many many of us are now in amongst you youngsters in greater numbers than you may imagine. I have tons of MMO friends that are 50+

I play in a full guild in neverwinter that allows just one char due to size - 500 players - our average age is 35 with many grandkids playing with their grandparents. I routinely play there with folks older than me.

I bought that copy of Arena at Fries in Palo Alto CA (Silicon Valley) and it was featured in all the gaming mags at the time and every retailer had gobs of copies. It was by all means a mainstream game release. Games back then had a long shelf life too, they'd be on store shelves for a couple years after release, quite unlike todays short hype and download without a physical copy marketing.
