Werewolf quest question (spoiler - sort of)

When I first did the werewolf quest I was sent out to kill something. At that time I located an elite/boss troll. After a couple attempts I decided to come back at a later date. When I did that troll was gone and another was found in a new location. This time the troll was not an elite/boss, and I had no problem with the fight.
Since I did the quest I have bitten two players. And both players are reporting to me that there are no trolls, and instead an elite/boss mammoth. Is this a random thing, or did it get changed somewhere along the line?

    Took many zone outs to find the Snow Troll ...

    I tried with a 32 Altmer Sorc (that has all points put just in Magika) to down that Snow Troll and kiting and running with pots of health/stamina, I failed terribly. I am ashamed, as I saw a video on Youtube of a level 22 Sorc spending 9 minutes running and slashing with bots ... but he defeated non-elite(?) Snow Troll [his health bar had no special appendages.]

    I just felt the regeneration and the "combat zone" of the Snow Troll's fight seems small ... shamed me [the Mammoth is much wider .. I failed, too}

    Will level up some more and see why I am so bad at taking on 10 levels below me.

    I am sure the last patch didn't alter damage given/received by mobs in that quest.
