Suggestion: Appearance Slots

I realize we have the lone costume slot. However, it only allows for a single (stagnant) costume to be equipped.

Suggestion: An appearance tab containing a slot for each piece of armor and weapon(s). Where players can equip any gear they may find in the world, allowing for a fully customizable appearance. This came to mind earlier when I was forced to wear the most atrocious looking armor simply because of a generous stat boost. I did like the "bone" armor I had on =). It was a great feature in EQ2, that allowed for a diverse look around the virtual world.

Note: Forgive me if this is already possible and I've over looked this feature. /thread by all means.

Kind Regards,
Alazarz

Lord of the Rings online has something very advanced in this area:
You have a "Costume" set of slots, identical to your armor slots. You can put the "style" and "color" of any armor piece (and special apperal items) into each slot. If enabeled, the slot value will overwrite how te worn armor looks.
You can wear a heavy armor and still look like wearing a Flower dress.
I thik you needed to "bind" items to use thier style. But this is a no brainer for previosu equipment anyway.
The function is disabeled in PvP however, to allow proper identification of worn armor from visuals. Not sure that would be needed here (with stuff like Bound Armor already hiding the real style).

The second best I saw is propably SWTOR. Thier modable, adaptable gear allows you to choose almost "any look you want" while staying 100% compettitive. Just a bit expensive to get mods out of Commendation bought Items.
And the current crafting system is not designed to copy this easily.

    Some idea of mine:
We know Colors are comming for armor.
People with imperial edition are able to "overwrite" the style of almost anything to "Imperial Style".

    Let's combine those two:
How about adding a sort of "Style Kit" that allows you to overwrite the Style of a worn armor by applying it like you would a color?
I wouldn't mind if they need to be crafted (using less mat then crafting a full item for that style/level), as I got the non rare stylemats in spades and rare style should continue to be hard to craft.

You would still have to get the style book and the style material. Just the raw material cost would be lower and you would be able to apply it to armour you found.

played both lotr and swtor, and I'd like to see any of those implemented here in the future.

I'm sure they'll focus more on that when they eventually go F2P =P

Agreed, Lotro did it right. Would love appearance slots in this game, I'm getting tired of this disguise I've been wearing for 20 levels, I'm afraid to see what's underneath it now.

RIFT has a similar sounding system where they have "wardrobe" tabs that basically look identical to the regular gear/inventory paper doll. You can place actual items or "cosmetic" items in those wardrobe slots and then with a little checkbox decide which items' appearances will show, over-writing the stat-chosen fugly gear you don't want to see.

I think they even had ~mutliple~ wardrobe tabs so you could set up a "town" set of clothing and a "traveling" set of clothes and so on, all looking different.

As noted above, Bound Armor (and costumes) already hide our appearance in PvP so there seems little need to restrict it there.

Unfortunately, I imagine this kind of system would require a substantial investment in resources and hence likely won't ever happen. :(

Ok, I just realized how nonsensical that was... what I originally posted here, I mean. Ahem. Sorry.

That's not technically a costume slot, it's a disguise slot, it's so you can wear a disguise.

A lot of games have this and it causes no problem with gameplay. I would love to see it. It would make wearing dresses more acceptable.

Well technically IT IS a costume slot according to the tool tip ... "Costume". If you want to nit pick lol. I realize it's for wearing disguise's aswell, but I think alot of people wear the acquired disguise's as appearance gear too.

Agreed. I would like to see this more than dyes, though I would like to see both.

Yes, EQ2's was very good. I don't remember LoToR's, as i didn't play it very long.

DCUO's was good, as it kept track of any style that you had ever equipped and you could select any of those styles for your appearance whenever you wanted. Each body part was handled separately. You could also modify you color palate any time you wanted, without dyes.

Yeah I do that occasionaly, especially on my Sorceror. I don't hate the idea, it's just that I feel they won't do it, in case it messes up disguises, and people start complaining they died because the game didn't recognise the disguise.

But I've felt for a while now that the route they took with crafting gear was slightly wrong, and we need something as a fix.

Yes Yes Yes, a thousand times over, YES. This is a feature standard in a majority of MMO's and something that would make me feel more attached to my characters instead of forcing me to change my look every time I level to the next tier!

RIFT had a great system. Firstly a very good dye system with 3 colour slots for each piece. Then in a similar way to what the OP was suggesting RIFT had an additional slot for each piece of gear.
Primary slot was the gear your stats went from, secondary was the actual visual appearance. You could mix / match / colour your outfit almost anyway you liked !

Yes, I would MUCH rather be able to wear this (what's in the picture above) than the veteran gear that is available. I don't like the goofy looking floating side panels that are on most of the upper level armor chest pieces. Having costume slots so you can use lower level armor for it's appearance is a GREAT idea! I loved having that option in GW2, it added a lot of the customization and originality of the characters.

This would make me love my character soooo much more! Please add this option in SOON Zenimax! I beg you!
