I have unlocked weapon swapping so I have two skill bars. Does anybody know if it boots XP gain if I put an active skill to a skill bar of a weapon that I never use?

A skill has to be on the skill bar you are currently using to gain XP. But a cool side effect is you can get exp on a weapon skill as long as long as that weapon skill is equipped on an active skill bar-don't need the actual weapon itself equipped.

It has to be the active bar when you get xp. You can change skills just before handing a quest in to get those skills boosted.

That sounds like an exploit of a bug, doesnt it.

Either that or it is an intended mechanic to allow you to train crappy skills with a good morph. Or a new skill line. You know, to encourage the "play as you want" style.

Not really, it simply means you won't get any xp for the skills on the first bar. So it's not like you get quest xp on the skills on both bars.

You can buy a weapon skill and place it on your tool bar and still gain experience for that weapon skill tree even if you do not have that actual weapon type equipped. It just means you'll be using up one of your toolbar slots with a skill you cannot use.

It is something I did to train up a secondary weapon skill prior to hitting level 15, and even in veteran content I have an unusable weapon skill sat on my hotbar to continue levelling alternative weapon skills with xp from monster kills etc.

Thanks. In your experience, is the XP gain the same as when the weapon is equipped?

It is possible to level a weapon skill tree without having any of the weapon abilities slotted, you just need to have the weapon equipped when you kill stuff/hand in quests/etc.

Does the skill tree level quicker with both the weapon equipped and abilities slotted? I don't know fur sure, but I should imagine so. Just like the rate of xp allotted to the different armour trees is based on how many pieces are equipped, I think a greater portion of XP gains are probably awarded to weapon skill trees based on how many abilities are slotted and/or if you have the weapon equipped.
