Any reason to go with heavy armor over light for a battle mage?

brandon.coker101_ESO
I heard that unless you use sword and board that there is no reason to go with heavy armor....is that true?

I'm using a 2H weapon and have been using heavy armor as kind of a battle mage/ magic and 2H weapon build.

Opinions please.

Yeah the only real protection youll be gaining in pvp and pve dungeons is from blocking+armor. Armor alone is not worth it versus the benefits you light and medium mixed. However, you can always mixed light and heavy to gain the passives.

Running an Orc War Shaman ( Templar Caster / Healer ) with half heavy and half light. The passives, while not so great as were I using only one, are kinda nice, especially the Orc racials.
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

If you spend time researching the right traits (like plus magicka) you can make heavy armor work very nicely for a mage.

Their is an overcharge alternative for a heavy armor mage. It includes immovable and the Storm armor spell. Both give such massive bonuses of spell and armor that even with 50% loss on overcharge , you still get tons of defense points. However immovable is in the one hand and shield. 2h is nice but its skills dont pair as well with sorcerer like bow/staff/one hand and shield. 2h is great for nightblade and Dknight.

So I would probably be better off as a sword and board and using light or medium or a mix of the two?

I've heard 5/2 (light/heavy) adds survivablity (And lets you not be forced to wear a dress :D) although I have yet to notice any kind of real bonus from it, as I'm still squishy. I'd guess its even better if you sword and board it.

Don't you mean +enchant effect? as +magicka isn't from researching, its from using an enchant on an item.

5 light 2 heavy is what you want to go with, as it comes along with the most efficient benefit for mages regarding survivability and max mana regen&pool.

The passive abilities on light armor will *far* outweigh any benefit you would get from wearing heavy for a sorc imo...

Sword and board adds a lot of defence if you know how to block. The passives are also very nice, reducing block cost, improving block mitigation, and health regen. Though only the first active skill in the line is worth taking. Possibly the "defensive posture" morphed into absorb magick in a few situations - it absorbs the next magical attack to hit you, and you get healed instead for the amount it would have damaged you for. This buff lasts 30 seconds if no spells are incoming but gets used up by the first spell to hit you.

Whoa fella, Shield charge is one of the most useful tools in the toolchest of a tank in PvP and is quite useful for gap closing after being knocked waaaaaaaaaay back by a big hit from a meanie. Don't discount shield charge
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

Heavy is nice for regen. If your going to priszm bind, curse kill a boss. If he able to get off a move before you rebind him, hp drops. Magic will almost always
    Recover on 19.6 sec bind.
Congrats on two handed mage, you rock!

Nothing in the Heavy Armour passives is sword and shield specific, A couple of sword and shield passives might benefit Heavy Armour though.

And as I'm sure people have pointed out the Spell resistance passives work well for a battle mage. I have heard that 2Handed gets weaker in Veteran levels, but that's not really a heavy armour issue.

Purely looking at this from a defence/survivability POV , the difference between 5H 2L and 2L 5H is...

20% lower block cost with 5 Heavy
Spell Resist 15% better with 5 Light

With all the sword and shield skill line passives and one stamina regen jewellery item the block cost thing is not a factor. Spell resist in PVE solo? Not many mobs use magick, but if i'm going to die to a 3 mob pull, it will be because 2 of them are spell casters. Arrows and swords can be blocked with your shield. hmm.

Health Recovery 12% higher with 5 Heavy
Incoming healing 4% higher with 5 Heavy

Magicka Cost 7% better with 5 Light
Magicka Regen 7% better with 5 Light

At first glance, the above seem to balance out, but they don't really. First, the softcap for Health recovery is half what the softcap is for Magika recovery, so the Health recovery passive isn't worth as much as it appears. It also depends on the health healed : Magicka Cost ratio of your helaing skills. As a tanking Templar with low Magicka, mine are around unity, but you may be exchanging at a better ratio.

From an offence point of view, crits and spell damage , light armour is ahead obviously.

So, if the min-maxers are going with a full light armour build, what have they to say about the shield? Specifically, I know what a shield can do for you when you have all the passives, but as my sorcerer is low level, what are you giving up by not having a destro staff? AoE? CC?

it is so definately unbalanced . soft cap on magica is broken as well wth reduction gear. Light armor all the way around seems to be the way to go DPS or tanking. Stamina is so F'd up it does not matter medium armor is all but worht less either way. purely from a number crunching stand point. But i refuse to tank in light so i am constanly Magica starved. Mitigation is only slightly better then cloth while blocking any how
