Downloading the patch now

I opened ESO at 11:20 am Phoenix time and lo and behold it started downloading a patch.

Approx 3 GB.
If I wanted a Signature I would have a Signature --- but i don't want one so I don't have one.

I have a fast internet connection, but even so, this is taking forever. Why is it that patches aren't downloaded in the background in advance of release, but don't go live until the patch is officially released? Makes more sense than having all users downloading at the same time, no?

Mine is saying it's 20k Mb download... and instead of updating it's repairing. Kinda scare me...

Not to be a smart ass at all but this thread should be in general discussion section of the forum I think?

I'm showing 2800mb. Getting about 1.9mb/sec download speed. I have a 50mbit connection so it isn't by any means going as fast as it can, but at least it's not horribly slow.

I have a 1Gbps/1Gbps fiber to the home and usually get patches, even large one quick. This one is so slow..................

Yep, I just had a second 2.5gb patch also. It's almost done. I'm getting 2mb/sec download speed. Far slower than what my connection can handle, but not incredibly slow.

Ditto on all accounts. Downloaded and installed 2-3 GB, now doing it again.

Because if they find there was a game breaking exploit or glitch in the file, and try to do a patch over, you still risk having a bad copy. Best to let the patch go live and to let them do the mid level testing first THEN let everyone download the confirmed file.

Ugh. I didn't have time to play for the past few days and was looking forward to playing, open the launcher and it started downloading almost 3GB. With my net speed, that's at least two hours so if there's a second patch of the same size, it's another four hours before I can get to play. Sadface. Guess I'll have to hit up Titanfall or something else to while the evening away.

I have to honestly say, I would've preferred a background download.

Doubtful if that is the case. The launcher will start of with a ~2.8GB patch download and after that's complete it will start mentioning the 20GB, being patched up. Not that this is not a downloading process, but a local file update/patch. Zeni could have made a clearer interface for this, by for instance having 2 progress bars below eachother, where the first will go from 0-100% for the download progress and the second would go from 0 to 100% for the patching process.

    Started patch
    Initiated a 50+ MB download.
Made a cup of coffie and returned to see progress downloading a 20 GB patch.

    "Oh no not again"

Guess I am just unlucky since I got a borked update last time due to beta client I thought. So I deleted everything and started over from a fresh install and I get this same problem with patch 1.1.2 as it is downloading the whole game.

It's not downloading the 20GB of data, it's processing the 20GB of data already installed to patch it up.

Simple reasoning here.. 3GB Craglorn update was released.

On top of that everyone that wants to play the game is downloading it. That'll cause slow downloads.

So you are suggesting that they don't pre-test their patches before releasing them? I doubt your assumptions are accurate, but I'd be happy to give the extra time required to do so and wait longer for tested patches if this were the case.

Plenty of MMO's release downloads before they go live - ESO did too, in Beta. There is usually a small "fix" to the patch on release day which installs it and makes it active. It costs far less noticible download time to the player and puts less of a burden on the servers. It just makes sense.
