    Morrowind
I was totally ignorant of RPGs of any kind though I played adventure games like Myst and puzzle games. My son told me to check out Morrowind and I was hooked. It is still my favorite Elder Scrolls game and I would so buy an update.

Daggerfall was it for me. College roommate bought it and I played it when I could on his PC. The huge world and "sandbox" style I believe opened the door for MMO's for me, starting with EQ - after some deliberation, and the fact that all my RL friends jumped into that game helped too. But I was hooked on the Elder Scrolls series playing Daggerfall extensively.

Wow, judging by the results, player base is kinda matured. (age wise)
People keep telling me they're gonna buy me an ale. They never do.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Elves.

At least the forum visitors are. I also have a theory that the Skyrimmers aren't voting/commenting because people treat them like crap.

Have no fear those who joined TES during Skyrim. Better late than never. Give your people a voice! (Fus ro DAH)

I personally expected to see more people joining during 4 and 5, but again, have a feeling those people are afraid to say so.

I played Oblivion first, tried Morrowind, but found it too slow to play for more than half an hour, which is when I quit and never looked back.

Skyrim is mildly better IMHO, but only just and it's a matter of gain this lose that.

Arena... back in the good old days where you still had to use a hex editor to move a temple of Bhaal to the right town or you couldn't finish the game... so yeah, I'm not that bothered by bugs. Atleast nowadays they release patches and fixes on the internet :D:D:D

Ages ago while at a friend's house they showed me a game called The Elder Scrolls: Arena and its sequel, Daggerfall. From that moment I was hooked. I own one of the last printed copies of Daggerfall's original CD (and now that I got the anthology, a modern-day copy as well).

Morrowind may be my favorite game of all time, but one of my fondest earlier memories is rolling a Khajiit through Daggerfall (cheating profusely, of course).

    Morrowind
I started with Morrowind soon after it's launch when I was 14 or 15.. I do not think was very impressed mostly because I hated most of the older 3D games and do not like first person rpgs, I preferred the isometric type rpgs of the 1996-2004 period after which 3D started to making sense to me. I played Oblivion years after it's release because I wanted to see why people were saying it was that bad, terrible and evil.I think it was the hate Bethesda gained for making FO3(Yes that game does suck). I enjoyed Oblivion quite a bit and then Skyrim came out and made me a fan of the series.

    Oblivion
At the time Oblivion cam out for Xbox 360. I always bought Xbox for Halo and decided to try Oblivion out. It didn't really disappoint me initially. Though I ended up not liking it a whole lot. Later I bought the complete edition on PC and modded it heavily. While it can be fun, the boring quests, terribly flat procedurally generated environment, simplistic combat system and lack of any real rpg element prevented me from enjoying it. The shivering Isles expansion was much better though.
I decided to try Skyrim out when it was released, and I liked it a lot better than Oblivion. It retains many of its problems, but the improved environment and interesting exploration kept me playing. Along with the thousands of mods that can do wonders for immersion. Still not viable for me in the long run due to the lack of any meaningful choices, especially during quests. I always admired Bethesda for their modding policy. I decided to try out TESO beta with a friend. I didn't like it at all, while my friend did. I bought the game so we could play together anyway. Ironically my friend quit after the initial free game time and I subscribed again.

    Morrowind
My first TES game was Morrowind. I initially hated it, thought it was the most boring piece of junk, and basically just let it collect dust on a shelf- at first. Then one day I got a weird urge to actually play it and after a lot, and I do mean a lot, of time actually trying to learn the systems and figure out what the game was actually about it quickly became one of my favorite games. Up until that point I was used to FPS like Halo and 007: Goldeneye. No real freedom, but no thinking required either.

That philosophy has stuck with me through the years, and I haven't had any real "bad" feelings about a video game since then. The same thing happened with my copy of Too Human (the much maligned and unfortunately misunderstood). Hated it at first, but grew to love it after getting to know how it really worked.

Games like Morrowind and Too Human taught me lot about actually giving games a solid chance before writing them off as "bad" games.

I started in Skyrim as at first I had it on Xbox 360, well it was my brothers, but I didn't really enjoy it much until I got it on PC when I modded it slightly at first and enjoyed much more and then ended up with over 100 mods installed.
I had previously seen my brother play Oblivion though.

Strongly disagree, at least through Morrowind. You could make an argument for "dumbing down" starting with Oblivion, but the games were still fun.

I started out with oblivion when a friend brought it over to my house one day after it released and the next day I went out and bought it for myself. To me, Oblivion was a fantastic game whereas I felt Skyrim was a fairly good game (not great, but good). If only I had known about the series pre oblivion and experienced the older games..

I started out with Arena, but never made it far in the game. By the time I picked up Daggerfall, I had actually forgotten about the first installment, so it seemed strangely familiar. But it took Morrowind to finally fall in love with the series - and to realize I have been playing sequels all along. Never played Redguard, nor Battlespire, however.

Purchased "Arena" in 1995 because I was looking for an immersive RPG (wasn't disappointed). Bought Daggerfall on release day... oh boy... those bugs. Since then, I've been an Elder Scrolls junkie. I especially loved Battlespire, but I never did get a copy of Redguard.

I played Elder Scrolls back in the early days hoping for something similar to one of my favourite games ever (The Eye of the Beholder series), elder scrolls: arena and Elder scrolls Daggerfall not exactly the best of games in the world, but then when Morrowind came out I was quick to buy it up and I enjoyed many many months of it.

The game depth, the extreme amount of space to explore the skills everything about it screamed play me more. Then with subsequent releases I bought them and got the same pleasure.

This is a game I will play for a long time to come yet and it doesn't matter if there are bots or some stuff is broken the game will carry on, those who do complain about little things spoiling their fun are obviously just people who want a mmo and not people who love the game and the series.

I'm in my mid-40s, but hadn't played any TES release until Oblivion, so your assumptions may be off regarding age and TES introduction. ;)

I did a poll like this earlier I found it odd (though not surprising) the people that enjoy the game and stuck around are from as far back as arena and the people who started in skyrim usually quit.

why that is? i dont know. I'll be curious to see how this poll goes.

It's a millennial vs Gen x thing. Gen x know what patience is and millennial by and large don't REALLY understand that that means waiting more than 5 minutes for something.
