Do you display other players User ID or Character Name?

I used to always display Character Name but changed to User ID a few years ago. Which way do you display?
EDIT: To clarify that I am referring to how we display other players names on their nameplates.

I'd like to show both but the addons I looked into did a lot of things I didn't want so I just mouse over the player if I want to see their Character name.

For others. We can't choose how others see our names because that is based on the other players' settings and how they want to see them displayed.

On PC it's in the Settings under Interface, Heads-Up Display.

Character Name

I use an old addon called RP Target Frame to hide usernames because I don't want to see them while questing/exploring, as they are super unimmersive. (Now, if I could also hide the character names without removing the target frame for NPCs as well, that would be mighty swell, but I don't believe that is possible.)

I use PChat to show both in character and username in chat, as these I consider it useful, and I don't have chat open while questing, anyway.

UserID. I know some people prefer character names, but a lot of the people I play with have 20 characters, including myself. I simply can't remember who is who based on their character name alone.

That's the main reason I prefer to see User ID, too.

In chat I have most channels set to show the character name, but guild channels show the user ID so it's more consistent, because conversations in guild chat will often keep going while people are switching between characters.

When I target someone it only shows the character name (and the title).

I can't remember now which of those settings is part of the game itself and which come from addons, I've had the same setup for years.

If we could have duplicate User IDs, I would be in favor of using that as a setting, but at present the options for new character names are too limited.

So many old accounts that don’t play any more and haven’t for almost a decade are holding several of the character names I would want, hostage.

How do you know the names belong to old accounts that aren't being used any more?

While I also wonder how you know that these accounts are no longer in use, I somewhat agree with you. I would also like if we could have duplicate character names, as I know has been done in some other games (though I have not played these myself so I don't have any examples).

While I personally have no problem at all coming up with unique character names I really like (even this week I made three new characters: Valerius Gallus, Druid Renette, and Minareh, all available on the largest server in the game) I would like it for the sake of others if the option for duplicate names existed.

And I admit this would positively impact my own experience. People might say that we would be seeing a million Galadriels and Geralts of Rivia, but we already see that anyway. At least now they would no longer be filled with random special characters and duplicated vowels. And maybe we would see less of that thing where people start their character name with a hyphen or apostrophe.

On console you can view profiles “Last played”, and see how far down the list a game is from having been played last, you can also pull up Gamertags through in-game UserIDs.

A lot of people who started ESO a decade ago have switched platforms entirely or quit the game.

Character Name

Character names.
Its kinda weird when I'm addressed by my UserID tho, but I understand the reasoning.
Some character names are cringe-edgy, or creative. I wouldnt miss out on those.

Like character "There you are" walking around Skingrad being asked "Ah, there you are, I've been expecting you"

every game I've played you can only see character name and being a RP I prefer character name.

I just don't really care what the user ID is mainly cause mine doesn't match here so if gives me a bit of incognito which I prefer.

I wouldnt even call it RP-focused myself.

ESO is not my first MMO. It's my 4th or 5th I started playing years back.
In almost all of them, but ESO, its the character name you refer to when whispering/speaking to someone.

Maybe their ID is visible on your friend's list, like in GW2, but when they are online its replaced with the character they are currently on instead.

I guess for me it's just an old habit. I used to refer to my MMO friends by their main's name unless told otherwise.
And the default setting in ESO is character's name I think.

Character Name

Character name. Too many IDs are questionable these days, though the same with names. So in PvP environments I don't know who is who half the time, but I don't really care either. If it's an enemy, I don't have to know their name. I just have to fire siege.

There's add-ons which can hide it. I use Azura (which has lots of options to adjust the UI) but I think there's others which include that option too.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the question: Neither, I have Nameplates set to Off. Display Name is apparently set to Prefer Character Name, but I only see it on mouseover and that shows both anyway.

I forgot this game had nameplates. It didn't for years, and when they were added I never turned them on apart from a very brief test, because it's too much visual noise.

But going by the other replies this is about everywhere player names show up: nameplates, but also when you target someone, in the chat window and wherever else it might show up.
