When was The Lydia ruined?

Back in the day, if you needed to level stealing or steal items from the environment, you could just go to the The Lydia and steal from an unguarded boat. This was admittedly a bit OP but it could have been easily resolved by placing a stowaway in the boat. Instead, the items just don't count as stealing anymore.

But it wasn't just The Lydia. There were houses and even Heists that became a free for all. Heists!

What happened?

Both the boats in Daggerfall Harbour used to work for this, not just The Lydia. (I can't remember what the other one is called.)

I've been told it changed when the new Thieves Guild quests were added, because they added new drops as stolen items in Glenumbra and they didn't want it to be too easy to get them.

I didn't know Heists had been affected as well.

I haven't found a new simple thieving spot yet, I keep looking around different cities but there's no where as convenient.

It happened with Update 50 when Daggerfall and parts of Glenumbra got a rework along with the Thieves Guild story line. The ship interiors are now lootable (not theftable), but the exterior containers remain theftable. The two interior exceptions are the two Thieves Troves in the Lydia's hold and the Hotspur's forward cabin. IIRC (and I'm too lazy go back to find the link to it), I said something to the effect of "well there went my favorite Legerdemain farm" while it was on PTS.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

The Craglorn apple farm is still good for ledgermain. Maybe not in terms of gold, recipes or plans but for levels. I know It's obvious but maybe not to some.

The stolen items are from Pickpocketing. The containers belowdecks became lootable to accomodate farming for the new furnishing plans that drop in Glenumbra.

It's the opposite of accomodations for stolen plans. They've made stealing artificially scarce and by extension anything that drops from stealing. Also, I got the Shadow queen's cowl in part because I thought it would be nice for heists (since I now have a reason to do them again) and not only the tg quests. So it actually nuked the ability to use the Thieves Guild callback mythic in the Thieves Guild daily, which is really lame.

Back in my day you'd kill all the sheep on Khenarthi's Roost it would count as stolen and you'd sell it to a fence.

And then they ensured those new plans never dropped lol.

I joined ESO shortly after Morrowind was released, so Vivec City has always been my go-to thieving location. I port to my room in St. Delyn's, then start with all of the drawers and containers in the corridors and rooms. Sometimes there's even a safebox by the lady who manages the place, and listening to the Argonian is always fun. "I'd leave that alone before a guard sees you. You know I can see you, right? You're about as stealthy as a wamasu in heat." The outlaw's den is conveniently accessible for fencing or laundering, then out to the crafting and banking area to clean out everything there. If that isn't enough, there's also St. Olms and the other cantons. If that still isn't enough, I port back to the inside of my room at St. Delyn's (to make sure the containers get reset), then leave and make the rounds again, repeating as needed until I've hit my daily limits for fencing and laundering.

I’m glad they did that. The drop rate for furnishing plans in unowned containers is much better than for stolen containers.

Telvanni Peninsula, Necrom. As an alternative you can steal from all the urns in the northern Necrom Underways corridor just outside the thieves guild. No guards there.

^ Necrom is my go to place anytime the game tells me to steal stuff. Or if I want to level legerdemain. An entire hallway filled with urns, no NPC to see you take all of it, and the entrance to the Outlaw Refuge is halfway down the hallway.
