My Sorc feels very clunky compared to my other characters

Alright so on my sorc, my set up looks like this-

I apply 2 damage over time bleeds on the target or I do aoe (my second bar is aoe) but both bars have Crystal Fragments from the dark magic tree, and Mages' Wrath from the storm calling tree. And the reason I like that is because crystal fragments seems to do a lot of damage and it's a good filler, and then mages wrath is an Execute and does a lot more damage if used just before getting the target to 20%.

The problem with that is... Mages wrath, like, for some reason, just... does not want to cast, 9/10 times. If I just get done casting crystal fragments (or any other spell for that matter), the game basically is forcing me to wait 1 or 2 seconds to be able to cast mages wrath. It doesn't let me do it right away. Like... ??? What?

For reference none of my other characters feel this way. On my DK who uses 2 handed sword, I can do Disintegrating Dragonfire (the firebreath) and then IMMEDIATELY do Executioner, no waiting at all. It is so smooth. And for that reason, playing my DK is a lot more fun than my sorc.

Is it because on the sorc I am consecutively using class abilities? Whereas on the DK I go 1 class ability leading into a weapon ability?

Yeah I just replaced Crystal Fragments with a destruction staff ability and it is more fluid but it doesn't do nearly as much damage

To answer your original question, it's not because you're using a class ability into another class ability at all.

Mages Fury, like a lot of Sorcs abilities has, what I term (unofficially), an "Animation cast time" or "Hidden cast time".

This is where the ability won't fire unless the animation plays out in full despite being labelled an "instant" ability, so animation cancelling such as weaving light attacks, bar swapping, bash weaving, etc. often causes issues (animation locks, cancelled casts, delayed casts, etc.) when using these abilities.

Lightning Splash is another ability with this same issue which is why Lightning Splash is so underutilized despite having decent damage compared to other AoE DoTs.

It's frustrating because this is one of the areas of combat that the class refreshes are supposed to fix (probably why DK feels so fluid compared to Sorc), but those have been massively delayed (with the next refresh maybe coming next year sometime).

You say you're on a sorc but I'm not sure if you're using overload. Overload is famous for causing skills to not fire and making rotations clunky. Other than that many, many skills simply don't like to follow certain skills or they can cause trouble bar swapping. I don't find it nearly as annoying as I used to having played for so many years, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

To be honest I feel sorc should come with a consumer warning for new players.

Some classes just have real badly cut animations and Sorc is one such class. NB has the best anim fluidity imho. Some can argue DK new anims are good but tbh, it feels real clunky compared to the past. Then, there's Templar jabs, yikes... but yeah, clunkiness had been in Sorc for a good while now.

This is enlightening. Thankyou. Makes sense. Looking forward to the sorc rework

5/7 classes feel terrible. Don't worry, they'll improve combat in 2027 or maybe 2028. In the meantime you can stand around for 30+ minutes waiting on "dynamic" content.

Something like this must be happening to me. I tend to cast Daedric Prey and try to barswap and fail often, even when paying attention.

Yeah! Half the time when I cast mages fury in Cyrodiil, it won’t work.
