Poor drop rate aside ...

Can someone provide clarity on whether it is standard overland treasure chests or the ones found with treasure maps or both?!

I stole one, but forget if it was a Thieves Trove or a safebox and probably picked up during a Thieves Guild daily. Discovered it when I went to fence/launder the stuff. Haven't had any drop from Treasure Chests (yet) and haven't cracked any Treasure Maps in a while, so can't comment on those.

EDIT to update: I can confirm that both Safeboxes and Thieves Troves are drop sources. Still unsure of chests and Treasure Maps.

I have opens about 300 overland chests and about 60 Troves, got one from a trove, thats it

The only key I've found in the wild was from a Thieves Trove. I dug up a bunch of treasure chests tonight and none of them had keys, but that could just be RNG being mean to me.

Minus the ones from Favors, I got one from one of the chests in a dynamic encounter. So specialized treasure chest.

Hmmm ... @ZOS_Kevin would you be able to provide some clarity? This is a common occurrence with something stating "Treasure Chests" but sometimes it is one type, sometimes the other, and sometimes both.

I'm not entirely certain on this because I just instinctively "take all," but I'm pretty sure I got one from one of the dynamic encounter reward chests in Stonefalls yesterday. Somewhere I got a 6th key. It could mean any chest, be it overland chests, treasure maps or even reward chest. I dunno.

I've never found one in the wild and I do A LOT of regular treasure chests, chests from maps, thieves troves and security boxes. I only got the one key from each of the runners quest-givers after you reach 20 each.

I got 3 from dynamic events, about 2 from thieves troves, none from chests of any sort and I open a lot of them. 5 on two accounts doing favors, third account has not got that far yet.

I have only found 2 keys so far and they both came from treasure map chests. Not sure yet about overland chests thoigh.

One from a trove in Glenumbra.

Although I appear to have lost some. Had the 3 from the Favours plus the trove one but not registering as having 4.

And they need to up the drop rate.

There is a bug, which could be seen as an exploit, so I'll not decribe it. I found out when the number of keys in my possession was not the same as the 'keys found' total shown in the Tomes system.

It's definitely lower than intended, considering Jason mentioned in the June livestream that they aren't really supposed to be rare.

Oddly, that same stream mentioned that they would start dropping from even more sources, things like Favors and DEs, once U51 hit live. But that's clearly not the case, people are getting them (albeit almost not at all in the case of DEs) from those sources now.

I got literally (so far) 35 treasure maps (last 8 days) and 52 treasures chests. Zero keys. This is either some gaslighting info or some dysfunctional RNG system. Some say only thives troves -- and those are a PAIN to find.

No need to be secretive, it's been discussed and complained about at length here. Anyone who banked keys for safekeeping know that the counter is bugged.

I found one in a Treasure Map chest. They're also apparently capable of mitosis, because I logged on today to find two in my inventory and I am positive I didn't find another at any point. I logged out for the night shortly after finding it, after running around for hours looting safeboxes and searching for troves and chests in the wild.

Just got 1 from a Thieves Trove in Alik'r Desert.
