What was Veteran Rank?

What tangible benefit did a player with VR16 used to have over players who were for example VR 14 back in the days when it was a thing?

Veteran rank was a way for players to feel more powerful as they progress in experience.

Once you completed your alliance zones the other two alliance zones would require veteran levels and each zone had VR levelled mobs dropping VR gear.

Craglorn the adventure zone was only for VR15 and above as it was harder group content.

All replaced with One Tamriel where the experience curve was flattened.

Looking back I think champion points were a mistake.

all the attempts at making us feel progression were a mistake. should have went with straight leveling like skyrim or just no leveling at all.

Sorta? I mean, I liked the fact that each zone was leveled. But

But I sure don't miss the idea of having to refarm/craft all of my gear every time a new patch came out and raised the rank. It was especially heinous back then when you were after monster pieces and there were no transmutes or curating and you had to gamble on shoulders from the entire pool of sets, weights, and traits.

To be fair gear needed to be changed every patch anyway as combat changes never stopped.

Sorta? I mean, I liked the fact that each zone was leveled. But

It had some advantages, but also made quest progression way more complicated.
For example Doshia. This was a showstopper for me, quest progression was impossible. I decided to go kill some wasps - for a couple more levels.
In the open world, you really had to run around checking for enemies hiding somewhere, with the permanent risk of getting killed. Of course that was in a way engaging and exciting, but on the other hand annoying.
I wonder if they should reimplement a quest zone with tough enemies and extremely hard riddles, that are not easily solved.
With the expanding world, increasing difficulties per zone would mean a hard path you as a player would have to follow. While new zones would be challenging, you would never again visit old zones, because those are way below you level and boring.
This was all fixed with the "new" CP way, any zone is now worth exploring at any time and level. (However it messes up story lines, when not following the intented path. But that's at least a choice, you can still decide to strictly follow the story and not to wander around into other zones...)

The difference was way bigger though.
    ____

Overall Veteran Ranks were way better for progression than what we have now. It was basically difficulty options before we had them.

I hate, hate, hate MMORPGs where everything is scaling to your level. Just removes any kind of progression.

Guild Wars 2 did it good, if you wanted to quest in zones lower than your level you got scaled down to that level, not up.

    I miss the VR system.

And the different zones being intended for different levels, with the mats therein geared to those levels. I could have one character do all the farming and just go to different zones to harvest different levels of mats, water, etc.
Now, if you want to be able to farm lower levels of say, water, you have to be sure to not put skill points in a toon past a certain level, just so they can farm it 50% of the time.

I liked the idea of venturing into a new zone 'above my pay grade' and seeing if I could live lol.

I loved Craglorn being open to you only after you were V1.... the day it was open to everyone's level and I saw level 7's running around farming nirn made me very sad. Craglorn had lost all its specialness, all the excitement and feeling of accomplishment involved in finally being able to go there.

And it was done for what... to appease the masses, so they could travel everywhere and do anything and now most of the new players don't even understand what the story is about.
They hop on to play with their friends for a few weeks, speed level in a day and then after a short while they are gone, saying that it's boring and there is no story... I run into so many that are high in CP but have no idea what the initial storyline was about, especially after they started making every new zone the starter zone when you made a new character.
They tried to appeal to so many audiences and lost so much identity of what the game was best at.

Some thinks should have just been improved upon but not demolished. I've never liked the CP thing, ever, though I have kept playing, but every new character I start I still do the initial Molag Bal storyline (for one thing, every quest is a skill point) and I've never been into speed levelling.

I will keep playing as I've found other things to interest me - housing, etc. but still.....

Thanks for bringing this up and bringing back the memories.
