It's been a long time since I posted here. I won't get into the details, but I didn't anticipate ever posting here again. However, recent changes to Two Handed Weapon skills and Dragon Knights make it necessary.

First, the changes to Two Handed Weapon skills. Frankly, they look terrible.
Every move causes giant orange flashes, screen blur or screen shake, or some combination of these effects. It reminds me of watching someone play one of the more recent Street Fighter games, or Marvel Rivals, or something like that, with the constant deluge of flashes and effects. It's ugly, unrealistic and incredibly disruptive, too. After only a few minutes playing, these effects cause headaches and nausea. I'm not the only one reporting this.

To combat this, I suggested to the devs that they use the customization system already in the game to make it possible to remove these effects entirely. If we can change the colour or appearance of effects, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to just remove them entirely.

However, the problems don't stop there. The animations themselves look terrible. The character swings the weapon in an unrealistic way, and the animations overlap one another in such a way that the character ceases to move naturally. For example, if I use Uppercut, and press the Critical Rush attack, the character does the Uppercut, but transitions into the Rush attack instantaneously. If I've already activated a third attack, it will transition into THAT instantaneously too, each new animation cutting off the one before. This makes the character look ridiculous, twitching his way through every fight at warp speed. There used to be some sense of the WEIGHT of each attack. The body takes a moment to compensate for the momentum of any attack. Not now. Now, everything looks absurd.

All of this concerns me greatly, because it has been implied that this is the future of ALL the skill sets.

Then there's the changes to the Dragon Knight. There have been changes to the function of some skills that I don't like. For example, I used to morph my Magma Fist skill to provide me with a quick heal. Now, there's no such effect. I can't heal myself anymore, unless I use the Dragon Blood skill, which comes much later, with its MUCH more invasive magic effect. The character in question is supposed to be a barbarian who doesn't use magic. I had rationalized him throwing a rock from the ground, it's going to be impossible to rationalize him glowing with firey bones inside his chest.
Then there's his Molten Armaments skill. In the past, this made his axe, which I named "Skullcrusher," glow with firey ripples. I used this to represent his berserker rage. It was a bit too magical, but I could tolerate it. Now, Skullcrusher is replaced entirely with a giant goofy looking axe with lava blades and a silly face on it. I don't WANT my weapon being replaced, I CHOSE a specific axe with a specific look and equipped it in my outfit. I don't want it replaced.

But, this is all more or less cosmetic. There is the gameplay issue too. It's not a new problem.

One of my other characters is Argonian, but I've decided he's actually DRACONIAN, descended from dragons. To support this, I gave him the Fire Breath skill. It looks great. However, it does SO much damage, it has rendered all other attacks completely irrelevant. Why would I attack with my sword or staff and do 4000 damage when I could attack with fire breath and do 25000+ and in a CONE to boot? Arcanists have that green beam attack that has the same problem. There's NO BALANCE.

Again, I'm concerned because this lack of balance seems to be the plan for all the classes. Game balance is one of the most critically important elements of any game. Don't screw it up.

I've been here a long time, since before the beginning, even. I was here in beta testing, and I've never questioned whether I wanted to play the game... until now. Don't screw it up. The game has been around this long because people liked it AS IT WAS. Don't try to reinvent the wheel.

Hopefully, my concerns will prove to be unfounded, but as it is, I can't use any of my Dragon Knights or use 2H weapons anymore. If things go as I fear they will... I don't know if I'll be able to go on playing. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this way.

Now, I'm sure there are people who like the new animations and effects. That's fine. The problem is that the original effects have been REPLACED. People who liked it as it was have no recourse.

(This seems to be a trend lately, where things people already like are being discarded or reinvented in counterproductive ways. We're seeing it here in ESO, but I've also seen it over at Lord of the Rings Online, with increased speed in the animations, reinventing the classes... all that. It's not just gaming either, it's crossing lots of media. Star Trek was once a thoughtful show where characters wrestled with moral questions, and had rational, mature and intelligent conversations. Now, it's been replaced with shallow action and childish, shallow, profane conversation. Comic book characters are being replaced, too. You're a fan of Captain America? Screw you, we're replacing him with Falcon. Oh, you were a fan of Falcon? Screw you, he's Captain America now, got to perpetuate that political agenda. You liked Wolverine? Too bad, he's written off now, and replaced with a female. You liked Thor? Well, he's written off now too, and also replaced with a female. You identified with Iceman when you were growing up? Surprise, he's gay now, you don't get to identify with him anymore. It goes on and on... but that's a rant for another time and place).

Instead of adding something new for new fans to enjoy, the original fans are having the things they were already enjoying ripped away. Truly, I would not be here complaining if the original animations remained an OPTION.

Let us CHOOSE whether to use the new animations or keep the old ones.

Update 50 added a skill style to the Gold Coast Bazaar that removes the Dragonknight weapon effects, it is free.

ZOS is working on accessibility options for visual effects that should let us hide flashing effects. though this will not include animations.
    here are quotes about it:

As a follow up, the team has been looking into the best way to present the option for players to adjust FX intensity. We have settled on the idea that preset FX intensity options are the easiest to use from an accessibility standpoint and are also easier for the team to triage whenever issues arise in the future for individuals who choose to use these settings. Therefore, this feature will not be a slider. We are still in development on this feature and thus what FX will specifically be affected by these presets is still being discussed, so we will provide more details later on.

New VFX Brightness & Intensity [Feedback]: We have seen feedback related to the overall brightness, size, and intensity of the updated skills VFX. We are working on some sliders so you can better customize your experience and adjust the brightness and intensity of how your abilities and/or other players’ abilities appear on your screen. This will not make it into Update 49, but we did want to let you know we’re working on it and will share more info when we have it.
    @ZOS_JessicaFolsom
This sounds good, but i see you specify new vfx and updated skills, is this only for the skills part of Visual Refresh or also items i mentioned in my thread?

Heya Luna, nice to meet you! This is Jose Camacho, Gameplay Engineer, first post actually!

I am responding as I'm currently investigating the in-game slider setting implementation. As it is now, the in-game slider setting reduces the transparency of any VFX sourced from either yourself, remote players, NPCs, with settings for each sourcing category individually. That means you can reduce the visibility of everyone, just other players, just NPCs, or any combination!

As for which VFX this applies to, the slider applies to all VFX we can catch belonging in the sourcing category. For example, if the slider for your own VFX intensity is lower, then all VFX caused by you from your own abilities, mounts, etc will be lowered. We hope to include item sets in that category but more testing is needed as we investigate. The hope is to include the options for environment as well but more investigation work needs to be done.

Really excited to bring this to you as we've seen this request over the years like with your recent post and want to make ESO a more accessible game for all!

They actually look way more in line with actual sword moves from manuscripts. Definitely not close to realistic, but way closer by comparison.

I get that in reality two-handed swords are way lighter than you'd assume from how they're displayed in the majority of fiction. But I'd still like my 2H animations in ESO to have more oomph than the current PTS versions have.

Since they want to modernize the game, I think it's time they think about diversifying the different weapon types in each skill line more. At the very least, get them closer to destruction staves. That should be the case for animations as well. The new animations look way too much like sword fighting, considering they will be used for maces and axes as well.

At the same time, the devs ought to take new art in a direction that still suits the Elder Scrolls IP. And there's been so much feedback pointing out the new 2H style being at odds with that. I think the issue is that it just doesn't look grounded enough.

We are getting an animation toggle from @ZOS_Jose and his team that will tone down effects, with a setting including multiple options.

For those who don’t like the 2H animations, or DK ones, toning down the flashiness of the skills will leave the abilities looking more grounded and realistic. Very excited to see how it plays out.

Hey yall, just to clarify, we are working on toning down the intensity and transparency of Visual Effects, not animations. The difference being Visual Effects are usually like the Flames or Electricity that are part of player abilities. Animation is the set choreography players will do when they activate an ability like a swipe or punch (as examples). To clarify this investigation won't be touching animations but will looking into reducing the intensity of Visual Effects in order to help players with sensitivities to bright lights, amongst other reasons. We are looking at all possible sources of those visual effects (item sets, abilities, etc) but ultimately we will have to wait and see for what the investigation brings out so we can deliver things in the hopefully best manner. Thanks for the interest everyone and we will keep yall updated!

your comic book rant is irrelevant to ESO, but i suggest you look through their Marvel Database character pages and read more of their comics.
    - Captain America and all comic book characters (and all art) have always perpetuated political agenda. there have been multiple Captains throughout the years, Falcon is not unique in this.
    - Logan and Laura are both Wolverine.
    - Jane Foster is Valkyrie now, and like Cap there have been several Thors over the years.
    - you can still identify with iceman, do not let his sexuality stop you.

I appreciate the links, thanks. That helps relieve my anxiety rather a lot.

As for the comic book rant, I know it's a bit off topic, but I was pointing out a trend I'm seeing across many kinds of media, comics, movies, TV and GAMES - which made it relevant, if only tangentially.

Checked out that effect "remover," and it's better, but there's still a huge orange glow around the weapon. Still, better than it was. Too bad we can't continue using the original effect.

So, I've been looking at the posture of the character. I'm not certain, but I THINK something has been changed in the footwork and balance point. Either way, if they're going to be revamping the animations, perhaps these observations will be useful.

    1kwqslccipbe.jpg

Observe the back foot. It's pointing too far forward. A firm push would knock him over because he's off balance.

    ayfjy3d2j8bf.jpg

Observe here that his center of balance is not over EITHER leg, meaning he's even MORE off balance.

    krquwkergbgy.jpg

Staves are not spared. They have the same balance issues, but also have awkward arm positioning.

    irb83q10adir.jpg

And the Restoration Staff too, with his arm held out awkwardly.

These are minor things, but the appearance of the game is important, and these are things that should be fixed, if you're going to "upgrade" the animations.

ZOS taking the soft yellow glow off my body (with the skill style) when I used Rally in the patches before the 2H change ruined the game for me. It's honestly part of why I just fire siege.

Yes, they changed the animation, at least for restro. They removed animations to free up space. I think there’s a thread around here called “the discount animation update”.

Something about the staves, why would anyone use the staff in both hands? There's absolutely no reason to beyond hitting someone with it physically a la morrowind. Skyrim had staves with one hand, Gandalf in LotR held his staff with one hand, in fact I have probably never seen a mage/wizard using both hands for a staff, preferring to use the free hand for magic as well.

ESO has always had an issue with animations. A lot of them are extremely sped up, or are extremely stiff like the /ritual animation where you have your legs tightly together and you're doing some hand-wavy animation. If you take the time to look at a lot of the animations, you also notice that they all do what I like to call the "mocap mambo", where, for some reason, the person in the mocap suit will heavily exaggerate the most simple of animations like head tilting or hand waving. A good example is when showing something in your hand, a few of the animations do this weird head nod for some reason, like a dude bro saying "Yeah-heheah! Check THIS out, bro~!" which is very...unsuited to the setting.

Just a minor update to point out that what I predicted in my original post has been happening.

Every time I encounter Dragon Knights lately, they're running around in circles just continuously melting everything with fire breath. No need for ANY other abilities. The balance is broken.

Beam breath builds underperform even compared to standard DK builds, nothing about them is broken.

You can do the same thing with any class if you make an AoE dedicated build.

The Arcanist is the one that started this, with that green beam attack (I don't recall what it's called). Other classes don't have the same thing. Sorceror's don't have any kind of sustained AOE attack that instantly melts everything (Storm's ultimate comes close, but is very short range). Templars have a beam, but it doesn't do anywhere NEAR the same kind of damage.

    I stand by my point.

Isn't one of the best clearing builds in the game on Nightblade using a Stam teleport build that nukes everything as soon as you teleport? I've seen it a few times, running as fast as possible, teleporting to a group of enemies and wiping them out in an instant, over and over again. I would say that's far more trouble than a DK flame breath build.

Personally, I use a Warden specific setup with Shalk and the scried Fireball spell.
