Weaving

Hello. I've been playing this game for 11 years. I've known about weaving for most of my time playing and always did it. During dungeons, raids, I even got a raid trifecta with my guild a few years back. My damage was always lower than the rest of my guild but I did manage to hit a 100k parse a few years ago and always assumed things were good.

Lately, I've been meaning to come back to harder content. So I put two sets together (not bis, just tide-born and AY) and started parsing. I hadn't done a parse in like 4 years but, the first one I did, I got 115k. I thought that was good, but soon learnt that people were hitting 200k.

I looked at my cmx and my weaving was sub-optimal (0.07 - 0.11). And for the first time in 11 years I dug deeper into weaving and found out it's a different world than I'd previously imagined. I installed WeaveDelays addon and it shows most of my LAs were in the yellow, orange and red zone. Simply terrible. I kept trying and hit a 135k parse with substantial better weaving, but still not there.

What's frustrating me is that if I practice weaving skills individually, they're all in the green zone -- Perfect weaving. But the moment I start my parse a bunch of them don't register or are in the red-orange zone. 32rhyuj9u2kk.png (I know, I did this in paint).

Why is this? Why can I mantain near perfect weaving like this, but the moment I start a parse I instantly miss the first 2-3, and then a few in between? And the rest isn't even green, they're mostly on the yellow-orange zone. I've tried combat metronome (and a real one!) and it seems to help with individual skills, but not in the actual parse.

I struggle with the same issue, though staring at combat metronome does help me. I feel a bit of lag/jittering when I parse and apparently my fps jumps around every second, so I suspect that could be part of it. I've also had it explained to me that the input timing is weird and very specific. Someone suggested hitting la 3 times per skill, I haven't tried that yet.

They need to just remove weaving. There is more than enough dps in the game at this point now anyway. The game will be better for everyone without it.

The most likely reason why you're missing light attacks is because you're casting your skill too early and that gets prioritized in the queue instead of your LA. If you have no idea what any of that means I urge you to take a look at Eigh1 Puppies' video on weaving. It's probably the best resource available on the topic atm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaTW-rZfKxM

He's actually working on a series atm about how to do damage. A few episodes have already been uploaded on his channel:

Also, some skills are just a pain to weave with. Any targeted ground AOE (Caltrops, Volley, Boneyard etc) has a small delay before firing and it makes it very annoying to weave with. Additionally, those kinds of skills are bugged and will randomly not fire. Even if you have Quick Cast Ground Abilities enabled in your options they will still bug out and refuse to cast at random. So try to use as few of those as possible. Ideally you won't use any, but some classes, like Necro, need to use skills like Boneyard because that's just BIS. Thank you ZOS.

Another reason might be because they changed light attack animations a few patches ago. They removed a bunch of frames from the animation with the idea to make them more optimized. I noticed that I started missing a lot more light attacks after that, and some of my skills would randomly stop firing. Thank you ZOS.

And, of course, you also have lag. If you're getting more than around 130 ping you'll probably start missing light attacks and/or skill casts just because of that. So if your ping is high then don't worry too much about it. There's no amount of practice that will help if lag is your problem.

One more thing, do check if you've actually slotted your Class Masteries. I know I've had a few times where I'd start parsing, only to realize I hadn't picked the correct ones :)

I know what you're talking about. I've known about it for a while. The issue is what I described. When I practice weaving skills individually I get near perfect weaving. Only when I start parsing a bunch seem to fail. The addon clearly shows I know how to weave. The issue is when I start a parse/fight a bunch fail even though I'm doing (or at least I think I'm doing) the same thing.

This post is honestly everything I find wrong with the combat sometimes. I remember a time when the goal of ZoS was to make it so you didn't need addons to top, when all the info we were suppose to need was communicated by the characters so we were not watching UI huds instead of playing the game. So much for that... There is a reason people cite combat so often when they talk about not liking the game.
