Yeah, ESO's character creator is weirdly limited.

    Limited?

3 different face types than can be mixed plus 31 sliders for different parts of said face.
3 different body types than can be mixed plus 12 sliders for different parts of said body.

That is an absolute truckload of customisation

The active word here was "weirdly." The ways they've chosen to limit the character creator are weird. At no point did I mention the sliders, because I'm not interested in sliders. You are free to defend the terrible triangle to someone else. (Anyone else notice the face triangle inexplicably also changes the texture of your face? Seriously, look at your character's skin as you move your dot around the triangle. Isn't that extremely weird?)

This isn't a moral assault on the design decisions made in the character creator. My original post offered some simple, low effort tweaks that could make a wide variety of players (myself included) disproportionately happier. I'd also like to see a wider range for sliders, but my primary concern is that I want to be able to have white hair and black eyebrows.

Also, that's not a pretty boy. That boy isn't pretty at all. He's got a 5 o'clock shadow, empty, hopeless pits for eyes, and a face that sags to the right. That man is going on forty, drinks regularly, and I can tell he works a regular 9 to 5. A pretty boy should look like he belongs in a boy band. You didn't even put eyeliner on him! How can you claim to have a pretty boy without eyeliner?

    I've made prettier Orcs.

Dam, I knew I should have bought those eyes... They work great!
Oh well, by 2029 those should come back, not a long wait, right? ...right?

Well the Old Republic and ESO have the same bad engine...but the Old Republic is rebuilding theirs from the ground up, they even kicked around migrating to U5....

Regardless if they can do it so can ZoS

I’m happy with my characters and would not want them to change.

It would be nice to add more options to the character creator for future characters.

More options would be 100% desired. I'd snap up a couple appearance tokens in a second if we got that (hint hint).

We only have the 20 options for skin/eye/hair color for each race (K&M UI puts them in a grid and you can see the colors, console UI puts them on a slider that you have to click through). However, there are plenty of NPCs in game who are using hair/skin/eye colors that are not available for players.
Everyone loves to point to Earl Leythen's brown/black hair when the darkest hair a playable Alltmer can get is a medium brown, but that's not the only one. Trynhild's shade of ginger is unavailable to playable Nords (the closest is a strawberry blonde), Erwurlde's (Mournhold guild trader) blue eyes aren't available for playable Altmer (the closest is a teal), and there are numerous Orcs with shades of green skin (see Mighty Mordra, Captain Graalug, Mornabeth, Brulak, and even Skordo among others) when playable Orcs can only get shades of grey or brown.

My Orc is supposed to be green. I'm mad that I can't make him green.
(He's also supposed to be a lefty, but that's something that pretty well no games just do at all. Because why should lefties be able to make an RPG character that looks like them, amirite?)

I'd love it if they would just make the NPC-only skin/hair/eye colors available to us. Seriously, if the issue is the UI, can you just... change the UI so we can expand the range? It can't be because "this NPC needs to be special" when the NPC stuff we want is seen on nonrelevant uninteractable NPCs in the depths of a random Outlaw's refuge.

I just want more options in the base character creator, personally. I'd be happy if they just expanded on that.

I just wish we could dye hair. I like the colors we've seen recently, but rarely do I like the style the color has been paired with. Let me dye my Dominion War-Locks black on top and fading to white at the bottom like the new Fade to Light War-Locks.

My Khajiit is the best looking character I've ever had across all the MMOs I've played, I wouldn't want him "updated" and possibly ruined. Although I do agree that some of the more boring humanoids could use some work (I've always thought the female face models were a bit weird, especially).

That being said.... more than anything I would want to see the separation of fur/scale patterns from body markings, eye effects have their own category, jewelry models to be added (my Khajiit sorcerer desires some bling), and for weapons to show for both bars at all times.

I think one big reason they won't do this is because of the older engine support. FFXIV just announced they will be dropping support for old hardware in the next 2-3 years. I think it's time for ESO to do the same if it wants to survive in the long-term (longer meaning longer from now). They're already cutting animation which has broken a ton of things. If they keep cannibalizing there won't be much of a game left in five years to even have these kinds of debates about

I never thought about that, are there some games that let you make left handed characters? I guess that means twice the animations are needed in that case.

No. And it's totally an animation budget thing since you would need double the animations.

It really does frost me that RPGs are getting more and more willing to allow players to make characters more and more like them... until you say that the thing that would make the character most like you is being left-handed. But with only 11% of the population being lefties, I guess it's just not a big enough market...

When Nintendo released Twilight Princess on the Wii, that was the first time that really the only left-handed hero also swapped over to be right handed, and now every non-chibi version of Link is also a righty. That one really hurt to lose.

Fun fact though: I played Skyrim for a full two years before I even knew killcams were a thing. I was so hyped about the potential of being able to have my sword in my left hand that I didn't realize that it was technically "punching with a sword in your off-hand," since no person in their right mind would put their weapon in any hand other than the right one. No blocking possible, and stupidly keeping my fist up, but it was the closest I could get. And the closest I could honestly get in any RPG, to be honest.

At least two of my characters are left-handed in my head, since that's the only way I'll get them to ever be lefties...

I'm glad they already dropped PS3 a while ago or XIV would have really been in trouble. Looking forward to them aiming higher in a few years.

You would think that now it would be easy to just mirror the animation and obtain the reverse, as long as the character’s outfit was symmetrical. Would anyone even care if their outfit was reversed?

It's exceptionally easy to do. In fact, it could probably be done in real time. Setting up the infrastructure in game to track which handedness is used and to be displayed to others might take a bit of extra work though. Mostly a case of making sure the correct weapon appears in the correct hand. Considering how difficult that is for the engine to get right as it is... I don't have high hopes there :D

As for outfits, that's not relevant. You wouldn't mirror the whole character mesh, only the bones controlling the mesh.
