How do you decide which character to dedicate time/progress towards?
I mostly PvP, so I tend to take my lowest level characters and play them. I try to learn each class even though that sometimes has me playing the most neglected classes (for PvP) , eg since the DK update Ive been mostly playing my arcanist
4 GOs, 2 Generals, and bunches of prefects etc-- all classes...I've wasted a lot of time in PVP over the last 9 years
I chose the one I have the most fun playing. I started out with a Templar, but once I tried the Warden class, I never looked back and have been playing a Warden main for at least six years now.
My first character from 10 years ago, a stamblade, still does most of the achievements even today. She was my only character for a few years before I started creating alt characters. I did all of the storylines for the base zones and all the dlc with her. I got crafting leveled up on her first, she has the bulk of the crafting knowledge and she does the master writs. I have other characters for PvP achievments and trial achievements. I struggle with her when it comes to combat but try to ignore the fact that AWA exists when I want to do things with her.
She does all the branch management for the other crafting toons and the crafting of furnishings for housing. When I created a new character I usually level them up quickly for a specific task (PvP or trials) by doing the Harborage main quest, get them skill points, and then send them off to their destination without much other questing.
Most of my alts have lost playability because I started abusing them as storage mules. Having housing items neatly sorted by themes on different toons is sadly a nice solution to a problem that shouldn't exist.
So if you want to figure out which character to play, just start hoarding stuff until you run out of options.
That's kinda funny because I've actually started to do that @Vaqual lol. I'm collecting every single of a certain item and there's 1 character I had to put them all on to save bank space
