I ran into Ghemvas on arc 3 and he absolutely obliterated me. I had 38k hp, 30k armor, an active heal, pale order, and could nearly one-shot the portals at range, but he would still kill me in seconds. Most of the damage I took was before the portals were even targettable. It felt pretty unbeatable. What do I need to do to be able to pass this?

you mean marauder?
Yes need to be quite tanky vs him, can also kite him out, dodge heavys

No, I mean the boss Ghemvas. He's the ruinoth who becomes invulnerable at 33%, begins doing a room-wide aoe, and spawns four portals that you have to destroy to hit him again. Trouble is, the damage is so extreme and the delay before the portals spawn means you're taking a ton of guaranteed damage with no way to progress the fight for several seconds.

I have also died to this boss when the portals felt like they attacked too early (do the portals even attack? not sure, but it feels like they do lol), but I've mostly been able to tank through that with Earthshield Mantle (and maybe Vigor) now that I expect it.

I think his mechanics might also be tied to health percentages, so it might be possible that doing too much damage too fast stacks his effects in ways that are more difficult to survive. But I'm not positive.

Yes, unfortunately the damage phase begins before portals come vulnerable.
Your plan is correct, you need to kill the portals asap under heavy room-wide aoe pulse.
Casting a shield should help you to live these seconds before killing the portals. Slot barrier ult for this battle, if nothing helps.

this boss is what i like to call "gothmau lite"

when the boss goes invulnerable, just stay on the outer ring (where the portals spawn), the pulse dmg does not hit there so you can basically take your time dealing with the portals

trying to tank the pulse becomes increasingly problematic as you go deeper in (ive fought this boss in arc 6 before, and the pulse was almost unsustainable to stay alive even on a full tank with 45k hp)

You don‘t get the AOE damage if you are behind the portals. Go behind a portal, destroy it, run behind the next, destroy it.
