Sellers aren't greedy for pricing at the high end of the market. If their items don't sell that is their issue.

I have zero issue with prices being set high in guild traders.

What I do have an issue with is predatory selling in zone chat specifically in the beginner zones to try and get new players, who know nothing of prices or item rarity, to buy things at 4X the price. That goes for people trying to buy things at ridiculously low prices from new players too, who do not yet know the value of those items.

That is how some gold sellers move gold.

If someone is charging too much, don't buy it. It is pretty common sense. Maybe they're new, or maybe they value their time. I use ttc, eso hub, and mm to average prices, though mm is not very good.

Evidently if you're seeing prices "too" high often, the issue may be with you. No experienced seller is going to want to eat listing fees, especially on "big" or rare items and will list at what they think will move in a timely manner.

I always sell at the lower end of the market because I prefer a quick sale over taking a risk in getting a higher price. But when all the lower priced items are gone players will purchase the higher priced item if they really want the item bad enough.

I don't know... I'll give an example: I've seen purple companion gear flooding during Valentine's event, at reasonable prices. I've also seen some traders buy up all valuable purple companion gear back then and place it at very high prices. Months have passed since the event and said purple gear is still unsold on traders, increasing in price every time it gets reposted.

Worth is subjective in a game where someone can have anywhere from a couple hundred thousand Gold to millions and millions of it.

If you see a listing for X thing at 100k but other people sell it at 50k, the person selling at 100k isn't being greedy. It's because they don't care about waiting for the item to sell; if someone wants something and doesn't feel like running all over the place to try and find it cheaper, and if they have the Gold, they'll buy whatever is most convenient.

And yes, I know you can technically check TTC to find where things are being sold cheap, but that has two major issues: The items not being there anymore (since the site doesn't update when a listing is no longer available), and the item you're looking for not actually being listed anywhere. Thus my mentioning people opting to just buy something regardless of price, as they might not want to spend an hour or longer running between Traders.

Two issues here. First, you're assuming that everyone cares about gold. They probably do up to a point, but you eventually reach the stage where it's just scorekeeping because you have more than enough gold for whatever you might want to spend it on.

Second, I think you're also failing to factor in time. If I don't care about the gold, then probably I don't much care whether it sells tomorrow or next week or if I get it back because it didn't sell. The item probably cost me nothing, so even having to relist means I'm still over 90% profit. For players who flip, however, pricing can be very important because you need to factor in what you paid for the item as part of the bar you must clear to reach profitability.

All of that out of the way, I'd much rather be the lower-end seller and get rid of the listing. If someone wants to buy it and then relist it on their guild trader, then that's their business. I don't think I've ever resold anything other than one or two items I bought by mistake, so it's all profit and the rest is scorekeeping.

It's a free market and everyone can participate as they see fit.

I mean personally it depends, but I list most items at a low price with the goal of selling them within 24 hours, because to me the trader is primarily a way to get rid of the huge amount of low value inventory junk the game throws at you (but to get something more for it than vendoring for a pittance).

But if I'm trying to sell a rare, high value item that took me a lot of effort to obtain... I'm happy to price high and sit back and wait to see if anyone bites. If it won't sell, I'll hold onto it and try again, and if it simply won't sell for what I feel my time was worth I may eventually donate it to a guild auction or something.

I just don't understand purple companion gear at 2 million. I guess if I had endless gold and absolutely nothing else to spend on, but I don't see the difference in performance THAT compelling.

In fact it definitely is NOT worth that much. But it gets "gatekept" because it's rare and it is easy money if you flip.
I'm done with it until next companions come, IF I ever decide to grind other companions. But I bet it's a frustrating situation for new players or who approaches companions just now.

New players can use blue companion gear which is dirt cheap and just as good really.

There are people who will minmax the absolute dogsnot out of their builds and who also don't care about Gold. Purple Companion drops in the right weight/trait are pretty rare, so someone who cares enough about that minimal difference might see that price as a win.

Me personally, I just want stuff to sell, so I always price lower than what the in-game TTC's sell average lists. Depending on how much something is I'll knock anywhere from 1-2k off something around 8-15k, or up to 20k+ on stuff that's like 80k+. My stuff tends to sell within a few days, more than likely to get flipped for the more expensive stuff, but I don't really care, I got what I wanted lol.

You could include old players in that, too. I have all eight companions unlocked and max-leveled and they all have at least a few pieces of blue gear. I'll sometimes redo a companion into a support role just to work up those weapon/armor skill lines, though (because why not?). This involves a quick trip to the Bank where I pull out whatever purple gear is suitable to that, hope that I've got a few blue pieces to fill in gaps (I almost never keep that stuff), and then slap on white gear to fill in the holes until such a time as a suitable green/blue/purple replacement drops. I'd have to go look, but I think Mirri is the only companion who is full-purple, which is almost 100% because she's the oldest of the companions and has had more time to get purpled.

I think for brand new players even green gear with good traits is fine if they are REALLY on a budget. I tend to run all blue with a smattering of purples I picked up here and there and I barely see too much difference.

This goes kind of off-topic, but it's pretty much the same reasoning behind how wines and their prices are arranged on a restaurant menu. Stick a really pricey wine at the top of the list and everything below that looks reasonable by comparison. TTC's item data is subject to a similar kind of manipulation. It's just a database, so the quality of the information is only as good as what's going into it. After that, it's kind of on the buyer to do their due diligence and sort out the artificially inflated stuff from the more market-based prices.

This reminds of when someone lists furnishing plans that are the most recent drops in zone text chat and I see the prices in the 100,000 gold to one million range, and they are completely reasonable for new and rare plans, and other players start antagonizing them and listing things like potatoes for 1 million in chat.

Perhaps it is worth more than you think it is.

Yes, older players tend to be more willing to be completionists and have the time invested to be able to accomplish it. I have tanks fully decked out in purple vigorous and quickening gear just for the heck of it. I've sold a bunch for millions as well.

    OP:
If you want to put the time and effort into it, have at it. If you don't, don't expect someone else to do it for you unless you will reward them for their time. In the end it is only a game, and we probably put way more time into it then is worth it. Just do you and enjoy your time.

Just remember everything that you can buy in the traders you can find at some point and at some time in the game for free.

The real question is what is your time worth? Answer that question for each item in the game and you have the price you are willing to pay.

Everything comes to supply and demand. I think if one uses TTC, MM and AwesomeGuildStore, the economy is quite nice, albeit a bit old and should receive some love in some upcoming patch. Night Market brought an interesting twist, I'm looking forward to see how e.g. sea fighting will influence the game with new collectibles / functional items.

I kinda like how everything is within reasonable reach for causal players (both crafted items like potions and enchantments are kinda easy to buy and those would be inconvenient to create w/o e.g. ESO+ crafting bag) and there are still areas which farmers/grinders can focus on (rare collectibles, recipes, vanity items etc.) where prices are skyrocketing.

What I would LOVE to see is some use for oldschool items, like food materials, like idk, once you conquer a fort in Cyrodil, you need to give food for the staff. This way the hundreds of thousands Cheeses in Tamriel would start to make sense.
