Imperials shouldn't have to choose a faction (Factionless should be an option)

Glorious_Platypus
So yeah, I dunno, basically the title. I don't want to be on any of the three factions, and I'm not interested in doing any of the cyrodiil pvp stuff so why does it matter?

My character is above meaningless temporary geopolitics of this continent. He knows it's all gonna be wiped clean by the end of the 2nd era anyway (right? that's the lore, to pave way for the other TES games to make sense).

If you're not doing the PvP stuff in Cyrodiil (or IC), then choosing a faction is basically answering the question, "where do you want to start the base-game?" Your faction choice determines (1) where you get dropped after the tutorial, (2) the location of the Harborage, (3) the sequence of the zones in which the Fighters and Mages story missions start, and (4) which two of the faction leaders initially think you're an untrustworthy jerk when you want to ask them about taking the fight to Molag Bal. It will set the zones for Cadwell's Silver and Cadwell's Gold, but that just goes counterclockwise around Cyrodiil anyway. It also determines which of the three base-game Inn rooms will be free and which you'll have to pay 3K gold for (unless you want to make multiple characters to get all of them free).

Beyond that, no one in the PvE zones cares. You're pretty much all right as far as any NPC with a green nameplate goes, except for the ones who only stay green so you can't kill them until after their evil villain rant, and you're "kill on sight" for the red nameplate ones, which includes your own alliance's troops in about two-thirds of the base-game zones.

If you don't want to pick a faction, then don't, but you'll be permanently stuck in character creation. Or just accept that you're the only person in the PvE zones cares about your faction choice (or having to make one) and then get on with playing.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

Alliance choice also dictates where you do your Crafting certification (for EP for example it's in Stonefalls). Except for JC since that's always in Sunmerset regardless of your Alliance.

It also affects a limited number of Collectibles, namely the one Alliance bundle I think it is. It's a Costume in that character's Alliance color and insignia, as well as a Dog and a Horse that have barding with the same color and I believe insignia.

The entire base game story is two-fold. One, helping the Prophet. Two uniting your alliance against the Planemeld threat.

Eh... sort of, but not the way you're thinking of it. Your alliance will dictate which recipes you have to make for Provisioning writs at Ranks I, II, and III of Recipe Improvement. Each alliance uses different food/bev combos at those ranks, but Ranks IV, V, and VI are the same for everyone. You can do the certifications in all the chapter zones, however, except that Jewelry certification is only in Alinor and Millenith and Denel Telleno are only instanced in the first alliance zones for the base-game.

One tidbit I overlooked is that you can only join the Undaunted at/after Level 10 in the first zone of the character's alliance and the Undaunted Invitation you receive at Level 45 only works at the Enclave in the character's alliance capital. I'm not aware of any particular lore reason for this being the case, but it is what happens.

You can join the Undaunted in Daggerfall, Davon's Watch, and Vulkhel Guard regardless of alliance. i do it in Daggerfall with new characters by travelling to the convenient Rosy Lion inn room.

i believe you are correct about signing the enclave book requiring you do it in your alliance capital, though after doing that you can pick up the pledges at any enclave.

    Damn faithless Imperials.
Zos then: Vengeance is just a test bro

Zos now: Do you want Vengeance permanent or permanent...

Thanks for the replies. I'll be honest. I made this post last night after making an Imperial and forgetting to pick my faction. Now I have to wait 24 whole dadgum hours to delete him and remake as Dominion because him being Ebonheart just doesn't make sense. And that is really frustrating. I can't just make a new character either because I'm at 10/10. A new character slot - just one - costs $15... Like...

If you don't have those Chapters, your Alliance determines where your character can get certified. Probably should have mentioned that part lol. I did also forget that your starting Prov recipes also depend on Alliance though.

Everyone has access to Vivec City (and will have access to Solitude come Fall). My preference for doing certifications has been Leyawiin since both Millenith and Danel Telleno are in the crafting area (less running around). They are still only instanced in first alliance zones in the base-game (no certifications in zones 2, 3, 4, 5, Coldharbour, Craglorn, or Cyrodiil), but they'll certify anyone who asks.

If ZOS is reading, this is a pain point. Millenith is especially bad since she either likes to stay rooted at the Fighters Guild or will sometimes path to the crafting area and go back while you do the next bit. Danel is initially in/near the Mages Guild in most cases, but he seems to always stay in the crafting area after that initial move. It would be super nice if Millenith would do the same (move to the crafting area and stay there).

I don't think these kinds of companies ever read their own forums. Unless I'm jaded by years of Blizzard's antipathy towards their own players
