ESO on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere

@NeffyEnn @WhoThenNow7 and @ScottTheElite we have a few folks looking into this and they are having trouble reproducing what you are describing. They have tried both windowed and fullscreen modes on both Nvidia and AMD, on multiple machines. They've asked some follow up questions.

First and most importantly, is there a chance you are using cloud play and not the native ESO for Xbox Play Anywhere install? The latter is a new version of ESO and does require full download. If you are actually using the cloud play option, it is streaming it from a console so we would expect that to be stuck at 30fps.

If you are indeed using the native ESO for Xbox Play Anywhere client, could we please get the following info from you? For the first few bits of info, you could run a dxdiag on your machine to get this info.
    • Processor
    • GPU
    • Memory
    • OS
    • What resolution are you running ESO on
    • If you are running the game windowed or fullscreen
    • If you are running any plugins

    Thank you!

@ZOS_JessicaFolsom I can confirm it is running the installed version, not from cloud streaming.

    Desktop:
    3.7 GHz Intel Core Ultra 9 24-Core
    64GB 5600 MT/s DDR5 RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (16GB GDDR7)
    Windows 11
    3840x2160
    Fullscreen

    ROG Xbox Ally X:
    AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme
    24GB LPDDR5X-8000
    Windows 11
    1920x1080
    Fullscreen

I don't think I'm running any plug-ins, can you give an example of some?

    Thanks for looking into this!

I am definitely running the native Play Anywhere install on my desktop which is:

    AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 8-Core 4.7GHz
    Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 (16GB DDR7)
    32GB DDR5 RAM
    Windows 11 Home 64-bit
    3840x2160 resolution
    Fullscreen

I'm also not sure on plug-ins either but don't think I'm running any.

I am also certain I am running the native version, and also made sure to have the placeholder uninstalled before doing a fresh install. I have only tested it on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Resolution, I tried in 1080p and 900p. Fullscreen.

Thank you @NeffyEnn! Are you saying you are running into the 30FPS cap for ESO on both your desktop and ROG Xbox Ally X?

And thank you as well for the info @ScottTheElite Sorry for the confusion with "plug-ins" - the dev who asked that intended to ask about if you all had any ESO add-ons installed.

Hey @ScottTheElite have you also been playing on the ROG Xbox Ally X? We're trying to isolate some possible commonalities.

Just a double-check but you are in Performance Mode and not Quality right? I ask because cloud gaming actually reverted back the other day for me and I was confused at first why my FPS tanked.

I'd like to share my feedback. Me and a few(3) of my friends are locked at 30 as well. On the steam version I get up to 100 fps. I've already deleted that version of the game so I'm unable to check if I was on fullscreen or anything. But here is my system specs.

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz (12 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
    Memory: 32768MB RAM
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650
    Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 26200) (26100.ge_release.240331-1435)
    1920x1080

I want to go ahead and give a second piece of feedback while I'm here that is less important but would be a huge deal. Me and my friends have waited many years to bring our OG accounts to PC. It the single biggest reason we haven't returned. Play anywhere is a huge step until we get cross progression and I can play that account on PC servers. But I would love to see the PC UI get implemented. The console UI is just bad. It's not good when using a controller and not good when trying to use a keyboard. The PC version switches freely between the two. So I know it's a feature that has been completed and could easily be added to this version. Being able to play our xbox accounts on PC is a huge deal for me and my friends. We have had these conversations for many years. "If we could just play our accounts on PC..." And we're so close to having that fulfilled. If the FPS gets fixed...we're returning. If the UI gets updated...WE'RE LOCKED IN until cross progression. And I feel like there are a lot of ex-console users that feel the same way. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Looking forward to more positive changes.

    • If you are running any plugins

    Thank you!

    I have the same issue:

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5800x3d
    GPU: Radeon RX 7700 XT
    Memory: 32GB DDR4
    OS: Windows 11
What resolution are you running ESO on: 2560x1440
If you are running the game windowed or fullscreen: Windowed (Fullscreen) - "proper" fullscreen isn't supported on Xbox apps and isn't an option ingame.
If you are running any plugins: Yes

I have an additional note to add too:

When the game first launches and goes through the Bethesda/Havoc/Zenimax splash screens and makes it to the Elder Scrolls Online "Press A to Start" screen, the game runs at 100 fps. Once I press A to start, a popup appears from the xbox app asking me to continue as my profile. Once I press continue, the game loads the next menu and my FPS drops to the 30 fps lock and remains there indefinitely.

EDIT: The popup box from Xbox asking me to confirm my profile ONLY happens when I "Press A to Start" using a controller. When I launch the game without a controller, the game runs at 100 FPS until I "Press E to Start". No popup appears but my FPS instantly drops to 30 once I get to the Play/Server Select/Options menu.

Is there no .ini file saved locally to force a higher framecap on the Xbox Play Anywhere version? I see the install but no UserSettings file like on Steam

Update: We have an internal repro and are investigating. Thank you all so much for the info thus far. We'll follow up here when we have more details.

I've fixed the issue on my end.

Adding the following into the Xbox Games\The Elder Scrolls Online- Tamriel Unlimited\Content\game\client\AppSettings text file unlocked my fps (Currently set to 180 cap)

    SET MinFrameTime.2 "0.00555555"

    Detailed guide for all:

Head over to where the game is installed (For me it's G:\Xbox Games\The Elder Scrolls Online- Tamriel Unlimited\Content\game\client) and find the text file AppSettings.

    You will see 4 entries like this;

    SET DepotId "1202"

    SET DepotEditable "0"

    SET ChannelName "xb1cert"

    SET LoadPlatformsFromTitleStorage "1"

    Directly under the 4th line, add this line;

    SET MinFrameTime.2 "0.00555555"

Edit the value to the desired cap. 0.00555555 is a 180 FPS cap. To find your value, divide 1 by your target framerate cap. For example, to raise the cap to 144 FPS for 144hz monitors, it would be 1 divided by 144 = 0.0083333333333333.

Save the file and voila! Enjoy your uncapped game.

1st off...this is so awesome! Aside from a few bugs that people have mentioned, it's working really well. I love that I don't have to play Xbox through the cloud anymore.

I did notice something about the image that I could be imagining, but it feels like the actual game looks different on Xbox Play Anywhere vs Xbox Cloud or natively on Xbox. It's like the shaders or colors are different. The image quality is much better than I'm used to on the Cloud since that couldn't utilize the high frame rates and resolution from my monitor. But something about the shading or colors just looks a bit worse. Idk, has anyone else noticed this?

Hello! The Elder Scrolls Online for Xbox is now available in the Xbox app for Windows as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. This early availability allows players to begin accessing ESO ahead of its official rollout on June 2, 2026.

If you previously downloaded the placeholder version of ESO when it was listed as “Coming Soon,” please uninstall that version and start a fresh download to ensure you have the correct game files.

As an Xbox Play Anywhere experience, ESO uses Xbox servers even when playing on PC or on the ROG Ally. If you already own the game or have access via Xbox, you’ll be able to play using your ESO Xbox account on PC as well as the ROG Ally.

If you choose to jump in now, thank you—and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or encounter any issues.

(You can view a list of any known issues here.)

Question because I am curious since this is an xbox play anywhere title will we still be required to get xbox game pass to play this or no?

No, I don't have Game Pass on console or PC and I can play ESO Xbox Play Anywhere without any issues. On console I can't play ESO since I don't have Game Pass, in fact in the XBox app on PC it states that a Game Pass subscription is required for console.

Can you also use a script for changing resolution? My main monitor is 2560x1440, and secondary is 1920x1080. The game starts on my secondary, and when I switch to my main, I cannot get the resolution to 1440p.

My workaround for this for now was to disable my secondary monitor. Then I booted up the game and it forced it to go to my primary and it accepted the proper resolution. I then reenabled the secondary monitor and it keeps booting up on the correct one now. Not ideal, but it works now!

I think the issue I have right now has to do with mod UI errors. Im not sure if I should report it here or to the mod author. So i'm doing both. It's the addon that allows us to change mod settings. I never used a single mod on console. So these are fresh install mods for the play anywhere version. The dependencies are auto installing too. I believe its LibHarvensAddonSettings that handles that menu? Not sure. But when you open the add on settings menu(not the one under options) has this error and is blank:

Once you dismiss the error, you can click on any mod in the list. But the next menu is completely blank and you are able to change settings but thats extremely difficult because nothing is there.

I'm going to add this error message as well. Not sure if its related but this is one that pops up when loading in:

I noticed the esoUI files dont exist at all(example: /EsoUI/Ingame/MainMenu/Gamepad/)

Edit: I used Claude and have now regained the ability to see options in that menu.

I'm going to leave these errors here for official fixes to come out.

Another current bug: Add on Settings do not save when reloading ui and relogging

Yet another Edit: I been working on things through the night. Its bedtime. But something just isnt right with addons and this version. Not sure what it is. It's having a hard time looking for files that dont exist, settings dont save, or the installed list is incorrect as to what mods are or arnt on. Is it cloud saves? I dunno. I'll check back here tomorrow if there is anything I can do to help as I would love to get this version working as good as it can.

I noticed the esoUI files dont exist at all(example: /EsoUI/Ingame/MainMenu/Gamepad/)

TLDR: Basically the settings menu is broken and blank. Also no settings save at all.

Is there a way to get the actual UI from ESO PC? (Steam, ESO native)
Performance and graphics are fine by my testing, but having the same UI from console is no fun with mouse & keyboard.

Can you also use a script for changing resolution? My main monitor is 2560x1440, and secondary is 1920x1080. The game starts on my secondary, and when I switch to my main, I cannot get the resolution to 1440p.

Hi there! Aside from the temporary workaround @skinnycheeks mentioned, we wanted to confirm that we do have a bug in for this (it's not unique to this version of ESO) and it will be fixed with Update 50 in June.

Thanks, @Leebmc! We now have a bug in for this, but our team confirmed that you can type the script text below into the in-game chat and it will also fix this in the short term and remove the 30FPS cap that some of you are running into with this version of ESO.

    /script SetCVar("MinFrameTime.2", "0.01")

Works perfectly, thanks so much for looking into it so quickly!

I tried this out briefly and it looks great and works well. I switched to PC years back, but it was nice to access my original account without the performance limitations of Xbox.

Having two separate accounts that are ahead of each other in different ways is still frustrating though. I'm wondering how or even if this will be reconciled in the future. A lot of Xbox players started over on PC and are in the same position as me. I'm hoping crossplay comes with the ability to merge accounts as well as characters of the same class.

Is there a way to turn off double tapping a direction to roll dodge? I can't seem to find it and I really don't like that feature on.

Also, having an issue where the Gamepad UI icons get stuck and won't auto swap to Mouse and Keyboard. Reloading UI doesn't fix it. I'm guessing I have to do a full relog. EDIT: Fully quit out of the game and came back and still stuck on Gamepad Icons

@votan73 (I hope I'm pinging the right member lol) is it possible to update LHAS to the new requirements mentioned earlier? A lot of the add-ons menuing and user-created settings aren't available until I assume otherwise updated to the new API call.
