From Balance Issues to Overpriced Bundles: What Happened to ESO?

I came home from work, logged into the game, and saw there was a new weapon bundle. I almost bought it, almost. Why?

Because when I looked at the prices for this;

and that;

I started to see the bigger picture of where ESO is heading.
  • Balance in PvE? That’s a lie.
  • Balance in PvP? A complete joke.
  • Prices in the Crown Store? Absolutely ridiculous.
And ZOS, you’re still trying to push for more? Honestly… no. Not even the Arms Pack. Just… no thanks.

Farming nostalgia with that teleport and I might end up being guilty of an unwise purchase - on the fence right now... It's pricey!

EDIT: one thing that is making me wait is how many store items were broken. I'd like to be sure it is not bugged in any way...

Ew, I really need that recall for one of my characters, and I did see a lot of nice stuff dropping today.

This also feels really bad considering that our typical April Crown sale didn’t come this year. Yeah, they’re never guaranteed, but still…

It was awkward enough watching the Direct stream and seeing how much of that was gonna be FOMO, but now that things keep getting more expensive and sales aren’t happening…
I mean, I guessed it was coming, but that doesn’t make it feel good.

Im sorry but no cosmetic item should cost more then a bloody chapter! I could pay for a whole new game for that price, and for something that only appears when your character is recalling... no thanks... as much as I would want to buy it, not for that price.

This is helpful for sure, but the point is that they priced stuff that high. It's been like this for quite awhile. $100+ houses for example. I would love to have this recall and I may because of the sale. The prices are a bit on the high side though, especially for a shop that also had gambling boxes.

The sad thing is some players are daft enough to pay that much and reward the predatory pricing.

My mindset is always 'however pretty a thing is in ESO, I don't physically own it'. So if I quit or the game ends, I know I lose access to all the cosmetic stuff I've bought. It makes junk like these items very easy to resist :D

Unfortunately this nonsense will continue as long as it sells enough to justify the time creating said items.

Yeah, the prices are really high. I make absolutely sure not to buy Crowns outside of sales and ESO+.

Granted I am a total sucker so I am exactly the kind of person to stock up with the big amounts on sales (perks of really not caring about other entertainment outside of ESO and 10+ year old games that I actually own instead of renting on subscription), but the prices just keep going up and up.
It’s actually funny when something old returns to the store and it’s like “oh, here’s a 5000 Crown mount right next to the one for 800, but at least the 5000 Crown one sends an alert to everyone in the zone that you got in the saddle”

I do kinda wish though that the art team would shift from making millions of mounts and pets though to more customization and skill styles. But thats just a personal thing. I have a list of things I desperately want ZOS to give me, and seeing them make a new cadre of Apex mounts every three months and ignore the things I want is kinda meh. This is actually the first set of Crates I don’t even want to but a single one of since basically nothing is interesting in there, and there are Seals for the very few things that are.

Personally i am not shocked at the price of the Recall and Tharriker as they are similar in effects to the Apex tier Recalls and Mounts.
Mounts with effects similar to Radiant or Apex Mounts are also usually around 4 or 5000 crowns.

examples of those kinds of mounts:
    - Voideater Durzog
    - Hollowjack indrik
    - Solstice indrik

My mistake!! I will tell you though. You cost me some money with your post. I wasn't aware of the crown sale and I told my wife. Her response was "Great! We'll buy some for both accounts." So I'll probably get the recall anyway. Which reenforces these prices because we pay them lol. I'm part of the problem.

I can't talk. I spent $600 to get an Apex mount I 'had to have' only to have it blind me with sparkles upon summoning, so I don't even use it lol.

Have you seen the next set of crates coming? They'll blow your hair back. Good stuff.

Yeah customizable stuff is great. I had an idea that they should do customizable mounts. Like horses. The high isle ones have like those war horse skirts and different tack and stuff. Not just that though, there's a ton you could do to customize a mount with all manner of stuff. They could then have that stuff as rewards, antiquity stuff, battle pass rewards (badly in need of better rewards) and in the store.

I mean, "special" Mounts alone tend to be around 4k Crowns, and that Bundle comes with a Pet too, so the price looks about the same stuff like that has always been.

Don't see why the Recall has to be that much though, I mean I know they're losing revenue by making all future content free and everything but yeesh.

You do realize that selling cosmetic items brings ZOS the most part of the profit, right? They makes more and more past dlc-zones free so player would not pay for them anymore, premium tomes are cost relatively not so much (and tbh I dont think many people decide it worthy to pay in perspective), so all the left are ESO+ and cosmetic. We all adults here and understand that to make ESO ZOS need money (all devs want to eat after all) so they need to find ways to compensate lost profits. And honestly I prefer that way - to buy something nice once in a few months, even if it costs more than it could, but have oportunity to play all I want rather than have to pay every time they relise some new content. IMHO.

I would love to see how the sales would turn out having more reasonable prices. We'll never know I guess. To me, that is pure insanity. I could be interested at a fair price, but 4000 crowns for a recall action? Hard pass, thanks. I can't stand the predatory monetization tactics. Another example are armory slots. If they were account based I would have bought 2 or 3 for sure. Given they are character based, sorry, not a chance I'm ever going to buy even a single one.

I’ve been trying to resolve an issue through the ticket system for over a week now, and I’m still nowhere near a solution; I have to wait 2–3 days just for a single response. How about improving player support and things like that first? Maybe then I’d spend a few dollars...

Sorry but not all housing fans will "buy anything", I certainly won't!

Currently I have three active subs but with the Anniversary it was literally a no brainer to save me time whilst working my way through 40 character's worth of crafting dailies every day(btw very happy with my stash of rewards from that event).

I refuse to buy Crown Houses that I will never be able to decorate to my satisfaction with the current limits, as the houses are just too big, I do buy cheaper/smaller ones though.

Luckily for me fashion and mounts really aren't my thing, so I can largely ignore most CS showcases and on rare occasions when I do fancy something I try to purchase using seals, which I have 1000's of.

I cannot see myself buying Premium Tome Upgrades, so I suppose having multiple subs running is for me the best way to support the game <3

I would imagine there are statisticians hard at work to set these price points. Spoiler alert, you ain't the target. It's the whales who spend thousands on a game they are after. It's not priced for the "common folk", it's priced to maximise revenue. If they could make more with a lower price they would. Unfortunately that means most people of "normal" means or "sensibilities' won't buy the stuff. That's just how it works. The prices are *not* set by accident, it's very intentional.

These prices are absolutely intentional, I agree. But I’m also reminded of PepsiCo losing 1 billion (that’s not a typo) in revenue targets because they priced Doritos so high that people just stopped buying them.

ZOS will, like most corporations, probably keep pushing prices up as long as enough people are willing to pay. The only way to go against this is to vote with your wallet and not go along with it.

looking at the prices, i think the price of the mount seems about avg, most of those quality seem to be around 3500-5000 crowns depending on how flashy it is (in this case its a mount + pet)

i would absolutely agree that the recall is significantly overpriced, and is literally just nostalgia fomo ( doesnt mean i dont want it, but that price for a recall is almost highway robbery), i dont think a recall should be priced more than like 2000 or so crowns

not to mention stuff like mundus stones have always been overpriced as long as they have existed (4000 crowns per stone is absurd)

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (fully filled out with current game), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

in progress: acquiring mundus stones (currently only have the thief)

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

I would love to see how the sales would turn out having more reasonable prices. We'll never know I guess. To me, that is pure insanity. I could be interested at a fair price, but 4000 crowns for a recall action? Hard pass, thanks. I can't stand the predatory monetization tactics. Another example are armory slots. If they were account based I would have bought 2 or 3 for sure. Given they are character based, sorry, not a chance I'm ever going to buy even a single one.

I recently read that over 50% of purchases in the gaming industry (in USA) are made by people with yearly income higher than 100.000$ - I'd say the target for these prices is not "the average Joe"...

Seems to me that once upon a time a poor person IRL could have felt rich in a game - well, that's no more: poor IRL, poor in the game.

That's kind of my point, most of us aren't the target audience.
