Can I play Sorcerer without Pets in 2026?

I haven't played since 2023, just starting back.

I'm debating between starting completely fresh(as either a DK or Necromancer) or picking up my Sorc who is level 50 but not progressed very far in terms of story.

as far as Sorc Goes, I LOVE the Lightning tree (especially Overload), Dark Magic is cool, and I really hate the permanent Daedric pets. in fact the only skill in that whole line that I actually liked using was Daedric Curse. the entire reason I stopped playing Sorc and swapped to another class in the first place is because at some point the Pets were basically mandatory and not playing with them really tanked your damage. or at least that is the impression I was given by other Sorc Mains.

is that still the case?

My other thought was to start fresh as a Necromancer, and subclass the Sorc Lightning skill line, since that's the one I really like anyway.

I'll skip the "just play how you want" part.

If you do not subclass you may find it is actually same as before. The fact you can subclass maybe solve the problem for you. Next update U50 will add pure class masteries that may help a little bit. Later this winter, sorc class is supposed to get a rework, with potential to address this exact concern.

You could play around with subclassing for now, info about U50 (pts) should be available in a week or so and then the big changes end of the year.
