ToT Can another player end your turn for you?

I was playing a game and right before my turn I knocked my drink over. Luckily there wasn't much liquid left in it but I reached over and grabbed a few Kleenex to soak it up. But before I could grab my mouse then and play my hand the hourglass turned over and counted down from 9 seconds, even though it had only been maybe 20 seconds at the most that I had been idle.

I was really curious about what had happened so when it was my turn again I didn't turn any cards and just watched, and in a few seconds the hourglass turned and counted down from 9 again.

How is this possible?

There's a limit for the total amount of time you can take per hand (which is too long IMO, but that's another discussion). It's 90 seconds, regardless of whether you're acting or idle. But if you "time out" due to being idle for one hand and then stay idle, the time limit on your next hand will be significantly reduced (to 20 seconds I think). If you continue to stay idle after that, you forfeit on your third hand.

So short answer--no, your opponent can't force your turn to end.

I knew there was the 90 second time limit but I didn't know this time limit decreased if a player remained idle. I always play my hands right away so has never encountered this. But why would I have had a shorter time limit when I was only idle about 20 seconds to wipe up a spill?

I'm just glad to know it wasn't some kind of things another player could cause.
