Too Many Currencies

I can't open my caches of tome points. I assume once I do they will appear in "tome points" which is 0 now. I don't quite get why the caches appear in the currency list but not in our inventory, like other caches (e.g., transmute crystals). And premium tome tokens are yet another thing? All this prompted some larger thoughts about currencies in ESO.

Not even counting gold and crowns, I now have 14 (!) different types of in-game currencies. Can some of this be consolidated? It seems unnecessarily restrictive. For example, maybe we only need one type of PvP currency to replace tel var, alliance points, and imperial fragments. Maybe one type of currency for group PVE content, to replace crystals and keys. Instead of earning gems when you deconstruct crate rewards, maybe you could instead just get some crowns back. So many possibilities for simplification.

Also maybe eliminating outfit change tokens and just letting us change our outfits when we want, like the recent very popular respec changes.

Oh. and a guildie reminded me we also have race change tokens, name change tokens and alliance change tokens, which for whatever reason appear on your login screen rather than in your currencies...

Please simplify this system. "Play the way you want" would be furthered in concept by not requiring so many different types of activities to earn distinct currencies, when all give similar types of things - skins, mounts, costumes, consumables, etc.

Tome points may end up being tied to a specific tome. You should be careful about opening them before this is clarified, as you might end up earning enough tome points for everything and "wasting them." Or maybe not. But the fact that they're in caches and not openable until after the tomes show up suggests they'll be tied to a tome.

Each tome will have a currency, called tome points, that you use to buy stuff from the tome itself. You earn tome points by doing Endeavor-like tasks while the season is active, and then spend them to get things like cosmetics or scrolls like what we got in the daily rewards.

For players with ESO+, we also get caches of tome points, which we can cash in to get a bunch of points for that specific tome without having to do the tasks. Those are best used if there's something you want but you're short on points and you're not going to be playing much that season.

I assure you, ESO has a SUBSTANTIALLY less amount of currencies than games like GW2. GW2 has so dang many, it’s beyond confusing.

Hahahaha I brought up GW2 in the pre-forum discussion. Apparently WoW is even worse! By a large margin! :grimace:

Oh dang, really? I was just overwhelmed by GW2’s over 50 kinds of currency vs ESO’s mere 16-ish ones.

ESO’s currency count is low... I have to track over 100 irl, and be able to know a lot more. Especially cryptos

Still too many currencies, note everytime a currency becomes abundant another appears.

Ehhhh... there are as many as there are. For most cases, particular items may only be purchased with one specific currency, so it doesn't matter how many Transmute Crystals or Trade Bars or Writ Voucher I have when I'm wanting to buy a Hakeijo Rune in Imperial City. By the same token, it doesn't matter how much Tel Var, Alliance Points, or Crowns I have if I want to buy a couple of Gilding Wax from Hlaalu. Would it be a lot easier if everything were priced in one currency? Sure. Does it bother me that there are a dozen different currencies in the game? Not really.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.
