The ESO Megaserver

This is something that has been on my mind since I started playing ESO back in 2023. I ask now because...why not?

Short question - how exactly does the ESO megaserver work?

Longer question - I came to ESO from the MMO Rift. Rift's megaserver is divided into shards that players can easily travel between at will whenever and as often as they wish. If you're out gathering crafting materials and cannot find any on your current shard you can switch to another shard and farm that one. Same zone - different shard. Same for zone events, quests and holiday events.

Does the ESO megaserver work the same? If yes, how exactly can I switch shards?

The reason this question came to mind is I have noticed that when I switch toons (ALL of my toons are parked in the same spot in Vivec City) the world seems to be slightly different sometimes than how it was on my previous toon. The most noticeable difference is the area around the bank. When I logout on my main toon there will be a huge crowd of other player toons mobbed at the bank. But less than a minute later when I login with an alt there will be no player toons or only one or two in the same spot. This makes me think that my alt has logged in on another shard than the one my main was on. This happens often enough for me to dismiss the idea that that mob of player toons just happened to logout the same time as me.

I am mostly curious if it is possible for me to switch shards at will in ESO like I can in Rift and how exactly that is done. Just wondering.

Thanx.

Game world is divided into shards yes. There is no way to manually switch shards on your own, other than trying to login and logout which is not a guarantee even. However you can teleport to other players to go to their shard.

The best way to switch instances is to be in guilds with other players you can port to. I often have to do this in Northern Elsweyr when there's a big party going on. Sometimes, both instances have a party and neither knows about the other one!

I'm excited to see how the megaserver will handle cross-platform play when that is completed and released!
