are they seen as a type of spell book purchased that contain symbols and such that is used as a base for scribing skills or are they spells within a book that must be learnt first..before using them in scribing

Grimoires are skills that you can customise via the Scribing station.
You can customise Grimoires by choosing Focus, Signature, and Affix scripts.

    Focus script examples:
    - Healing, heals allies.
    - Pull, pulls enemies towards you like Dragonknight's chains.
    - Taunt, taunts enemies.
    - Frost, deals frost damage.

    Signature examples:
    - Sage's Remedy, heals over time.
    - Lingering Torment, deals damage over time.
    - Druid's Resurgence, restores resources.

Affix scripts apply buffs or debuffs.

thank you LunaFlora, so Grimoires are a type of spell book then whose spells you must learn first if you wish to use it in scribing? or a skill book?

In other words, is your question: “is a grimoire a spell book for a spell that is then iterated upon in scribing?” or “does a grimoire contain a component of spell crafting that cannot be cast as an individual spell?” ?

I don’t read lorebooks so I’m not sure if we know this for sure. I think it could go either way.

I believe Oblivion spellcrafting is dependent on combining spells you already know together, using full spells as components for more complicated spells. It could be the same way that say, banner bearer is a spell, doing magic damage is a spell, applying heroism is a spell, and they’re being combined together.

However, in the UESP article for spell making (https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Spellmaking) scripts are described as if they’re simply components of spellcrafting, which would imply the grimoires are as well. Especially since, we the players, cannot cast the spells without any scripts. Nor can we cast scripts directly.

Edit: I would lean more towards the latter, that a grimoire is only a component, because scribing is described as an earlier version of spell making and combining full spells is probably more complicated. We also cannot combine every spell together and scripts are more… attributes of spells instead of spells themselves (like we can do flame damage using various spells, but flame damage itself isnt a specific spell).

you get the Wield Soul grimoire in the first Scribing quest.
And you can buy the others from the merchant in the Scholarium, the quest hub.
to buy them you need to level the Weapon, Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Assault, and Support skill lines.

you get scripts from daily quests, Scribing questline, and various Mages Guildhalls.
the eso-hub page i linked earlier has more details.

here is a video guide if that is easier.

i do not understand what you are referring to with "whose spells you must learn first".
    if it helps,
Ulfsild created some of the Grimoires in-universe, she was a witch in the First Era.
she was married to Shalidor, the ghost mage that we meet in the Mages Guild questline.

This was posted in the lore category, they’re not asking about how scribing works as a system. They’re asking what exactly are within grimoires in-universe.
