Tempering Alloy drop rate

Hi guys and girls. I've heard from lots of people about getting 3/3 in Metal Extraction and 3/3 in Blacksmith Hireling and you'll start getting those Tempering Alloys in. That's what I've been hearing and that's what I've done.

Hireling has been 3/3 for about 3 weeks now. 3/3 Metal Extraction... same. Maybe a few days less. Literally thousands of ore (mostly calc and galatite) refined since 3/3 Metal Extraction skill bought.

Total number of Tempering Alloys obtained? .... one. Yes, just one.

Compare this to the clothing wax and the woodworking rosin. I also have 3/3 Hirelings in those skills and the equivalent 3/3 extraction skill. I have about 30 wax and maybe 15 rosin, obtaining from exactly the same process.

So, is it just me? Is the game playing a joke on me and giving my heavy armor-wearing tank lots of wax he won't use but no tempering alloys? Is my luck that bad?

Or is the drop rate for Tempering Alloy really low compared to the other two gold tier improvements?

Idk about you only getting 1, but the drop rates seem appropriate to me. Dreugh Wax is more common because it covers light AND medium armor.

Must be you did a run of 200 Iron Ore last night and got 3 from that.

You must be deconstructing yellow tier items to get Tempering Alloys, right? I've deconstructed purples items and gotten purple improvements, blue and gotten blue, etc but never cross colors.

Youll only get yellow upgrade items from refining raw materials and the hireling.

There are no dropped legendaries in the game.

No dropped but you could decon a crafted legendary item and maybe get a tempered alloy, correct? Though that's a horrible way to get them... since it takes some many to make the item in the first place.

lol My ratio is 0:1:2 (BS/Wood/Cloth) or near enough. I can't imagine that my drop rate is bugged. That wouldn't make sense. It would be equally bugged for others as well. I just got crappy luck. :\

What level is your Metallurgy out of 9?
I think that's the name, it's the first skill in Blacksmithing.
One thing I found with hirelings is that when I was level 45 or so in Blacksmithing (or any craft) I had a Level 3 Hireling and it was giving me garbage.

Problem seems to have been I only has 2/9 in the type of materials I could actually use to craft. I got to level 45 just by deconstructing, not crafting.
When I placed more skill points in Metallurgy I received a lot better items.

I do think Tempering Alloy is harder than the others though, or maybe it is what I am refining at present.
I refine stacks of Quicksliver Ore and get nothing lately.

I'm Blacksmithing rank 50 and Metallurgy 7/9. I'll increase that to equip myself with gear as I go up in VR levels. No idea if Metallurgy rank has an effect on getting Tempering Alloy.

7/9 is what I have and now I do get it from Hirelings. When I was 2/7 I did not.

I don't think Metallurgy has anything to do with refining and Tempering as that would be the other passive.

Perhaps it is the Ore that may be slightly bugged.
Like I said I have been refining Quicksilver stacks in VR7 Zone and have not gotten one.
TO think of it I'm not sure I have ever received on from refining, only Hirelings.
One poster above stated he got 3 from Iron Ore.

Either we are unlucky or Iron ore could be worth checking out.

On my crafter I've got 3/3 in hirelings and extraction and 7/9 in all 3 gear crafting professions, and I've only got 4 or 5 of the yellow upgrade mats in each profession. I think its purely luck of the draw.

I commented on this in another thread, but I have 50 in wood, metal and cloth and I do not recall EVER receiving a gold improvement from refining, I am sure I have, but I do not recall it. I have gotten a ton from hirelings though.

It's the RNG... I have Clothing, Smithing and Woodworking all at 3/3 extraction. I have a few Dreugh Wax, a couple more Rosin, and about 15 Tempering Alloy.
  • Pppaul
    Pppaul
And yes... boosting extraction certainly DOES help. I ran with 1/3 extraction in all 3 for a long time. Raised this to 3/3 and I see a lot more gold refinements as a result.

based on a log ive been keeping the rate for getting alloy is 2-3% (about 2 alloys for every 1000 ores)

The BS level should matter in this. I mean the probability of being Lv 50 with all passives and refining the last king of ores should give a high amount of % to get alloy
Im LV42 and refining Calcium does give me purples in a decent way

I'm almost tempted to say it's lower than the others. I get considerably more Rosin and Dreugh Wax, but it might just be confirmation bias.

I've been keeping my hireling log for about 3 weeks.
Of course it's not enough to make any statistical assumptions, so it's just some curious numbers.

Out of 23 blacksmith chests I've got:

    3 Honing Stone
    7 Dwarven Oil
    4 Grain Solvent
    1 Tempering Alloy
    8 nothing

Also during that time I upgraded Hireling from 2/3 to 3/3.

With 2/3 hireling I've got 6 chests of which 3 were empty ( 50% of getting an upgrade material)
With 3/3 hireling I've got 17 chests of which 5 were empty (so about 60% - chance to get something increased by 10%).

PS: By "empty" I mean there was no upgrade materials, only ore and occasional style/trait gem.

Well I can give you some fixed numbers. I started doing the hireling rotation (3 on each alt and my main) 2 weeks ago, I have never sold any of my gold, purple or blue improvements, nor have I ever used any. I recall the approx golds from looking last night, I will get a specific number this evening when I get home.

I am VR3 and have had 50 in cloth/metal for 8-9 days and hit 50 with wood 4 days ago. I've had 3/3 hirelings since the third week of release.

I want to say I had around 47 wax and 50 Temper with 26 or so Rosin. I don't remember how many purple, but I had 150 or so of the blue enhancement and 250+ of the green (I use the greens pretty regularly too).

That's opening 3 bags a day for the first 2-3 weeks and 24-27 a day for the last 2 weeks.

So I did an inventory last night:

    209 Embroidery
    135 Oil
    62 Turpen

    68 Grain
    75 Lining
    47 Mastic

    71 Wax
    30 Tempering
    36 Rosin

    Weird distribution.

Not sure why I have so much more wax than Temper or Rosin. Same seems to be true in Blues and in Greens (which I didn't list).

That's opening 1 bag for each for the first 3 weeks and 8-9 for each after.

Right but you generally only use 1-2 weapons, so the drop rate for it should be maybe 15% higher than wax.

Which looking at numbers is not the case, it's actually lower.

Whereas a player wearing light or medium armor only needs wax for 7 pieces and tempering for 1-2 weapons, the player in heavy needs tempering for 8-9 pieces.
