When I did that quest I thought perhaps the writers were somewhat mocking us for our comments about the writing here, and I remembered that I made a some not-so-flattering comments about the new Lord of the Rongs series that was adapted for “modern audiences”.

Well, FFXIV just had a patch yesterday that seemed to do the same thing. One of the biggest criticisms of their last expansion was that the player character took a backseat to an unpopular NPC who became the main character of the expansion.

Yesterday they added a quest where another NPC was cast as the main character of a specific quest, and they have a dialogue option where your PC says "What? I'm not the main character?" and then sulks.

I have no idea what is wrong with Devs who think poking fun at concerns of fans is a good thing.

@katanagirl1 You can edit posts. I edit away typos all the time.

Even doing it now with this one, and it will say it has been edited. If you hover over your post, there should be a little cog next to the comment number, you click that to edit.

If you mean "Lord of the Rongs," there, then I'd just like to say for me that's a happy accident because I thought it was a joke and found it comedy gold lol.

I have another thing to remark on that "The people need happy endings, action and simple stories" argument made by Dreams-in-Scenes. It's more of an anecdote, but I think it fits the topic.

So, I've started reading a series of small books from around 1720. At that time, the bubonic plague was devastating Southern France, Antonio Vivaldi composed The Four Seasons, and in the Caribbean, it was the Golden Age of Piracy. That as a short overview about what the people were up to at that time.

Anyway, those books were meant as fictional entertainment, but also as providing some educational and moral value. They all have the same frame story: Two historical figures from different cultures or eras met in the afterlife, became friends, and discuss different topics from their culture's and time's perspective.

It's a mix between actual biographical facts about the characters involved (and historical facts of their countries), those fictional philosophical discussions, and it also has some humour. It's actually really entertaining. But most of all, I noticed these things:

    - The author (who was a historian and actually mostly a non-fiction writer who also wrote different travel memoirs) researched and portrayed the different mindsets of various cultures and eras quite well.
    - It's a fair portrayal of different viewpoints.
    - There's no blatant lecturing, but the reader can contemplate which of the characters' different opinions they agree with or not, or what opinion they have on the discussed topics.

1720! And now, over 300 years later, despite people having much better chances to access education, books, or other sources for learning, media gives us clichéd characters (that are sometimes nothing more than an author's mouthpiece), and simple moral lessons presented to us as "the truth"...
