Companion involuntarily unsummoned during City of Ash I final boss fight

While soloing City of Ash I with Bastian, he became unsummoned midway through the fight with the final boss. I managed to get far enough away from the boss to cause the "joining encounter in progress" to trigger, and after doing that a few times I managed to reset the boss and summon Bastian again before aggroing the boss.

Then it happened a second time, even though I was careful to keep my Quickslots wheel on something else (a stack of Weapon Power potions). The second time, I was not able to reset the boss and summon Bastian again, so I shut off my computer, powered back up again, and logged back in within enough time to get back into the dungeon without resetting it.

When I summoned Bastian the third time, I removed him from the Quickslots to ensure that he wasn't being accidentally unsummoned by me. And partway through the fight, he disappeared again (meaning his info no longer showed in the "grouped players" section of the screen), but then he reappeared after a second.

As best as I could tell, the moment he disappeared coincided with me having to jump into one of the ditches of water that criss-cross the area of the final fight. When I jumped or climbed back out of the water, Bastian reappeared.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

Maybe he was scared? Have you let him die often during fights? He has a right to self-preservation.

Companions are programmed to "phase out" while you're swimming; perhaps there's some interaction going on there. That said, I don't think I've lost either Sharp or Azandar that way while engaged in that same fight, even though I sometimes end up in the water for a very short time. There's probably a window where you can get away with it?

ETA: There are places where you can jump across without going in the water, although it can be hard to keep track of exactly where you are when focussed on the boss and he does that teleport thing. If you have a ranged attack, you could switch to that until you get your bearings, and simply watch where your companion goes (since they will avoid pathing through water).

I almost never play with a Companion, and was only doing so because of the Hearts Week event. One reason for wanting to complete a dungeon that day was for a Daily Endeavor, which did not require being grouped. But I also wanted to get an event box from killing the final boss with a Companion summoned, so having my Companion disappear during the final fight kind of defeated the purpose.

I had completed the same boss fight earlier in the day on PCEU without any problem, so my guess is that I got stuck in the water for a little too long on PCNA. I normally do jump across the ditches of water, but depending on the precise location it can be easy to fall in, and there are places where it's more difficult to climb or jump back out of the water.

companions will basically despawn when you are in swimming animation

ive always personally disliked this fight because of the fact some of the water is deep enough to force you into swimming animation

ive done the dungeon enough to know which water areas in there cause swimming, so can usually jump over them, and thankfully i dont need the companion to solo that dungeon regardless lol
    plays PC/NA

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

Yeah, I solo dungeons and world bosses without using any companions, mostly because I don't need them, but also because they can cause bosses to reset. But this week I've been doing everything (except PvP) with Bastian, purely for the event.

Do you have Bastiaan configured for range or melee? I was using Azandur as a ranged healer companion, so when the boss did the transport thing he would just switch target and remain in combat. That might help with a companion not disappearing as quickly.

Interesting thing: they do actually phase out, as in do a short fade into invisibility - happened to catch it the other day when I was in the water while facing my companion.

I have Bastian set up with a Destruction Staff, so ranged damage.
