Groups show Character names even though my settings prefer User ID

Why do groups I join show everyone's Character names even though my settings prefer User ID? Also, sometimes when I receive a whisper it shows from the Character name but when I reply it replies to the User ID.

If we set to prefer one way or the other shouldn't that carry over to everywhere the names are displayed?

If you're using addons, many addons have an additional setting you need to change to adjust names in the group frame. PChat may also have an adjustment for names in chat, I'm not sure.

If you aren't using addons, I'd double check the guild settings for base game settings (the menu where you can adjust colors of different guilds). As weird as that sounds, I seem to remember there being a setting for name displays in the chat window there.

This is what I see when in a group. If it's not automatically set to our preference, shouldn't there be a dropdown to choose Character Name or User ID? @ZOS_Kevin

Yes this works properly on gamepad UI but on keyboard UI it will always show character name on:
- group display
- alliance war / emperor leaderboards
- leaderboards
- probably the chat too (I use pChat so I don't know)

That's why Jarva did this addon which I improved adding the leaderboards (only 103 lines of code):

If you chose " prefer @userid " in the settings then this must be applied throughout all the UI.
That imperfection has been there for too long in the keyboard UI of the vanilla game, honestly it can be fixed in like 30mn as it is just replacing a variable with the right one (there's a variable or function returning the proper output according to your preference).

@Masteroshi430 Thank you! I will install this today so I can finally have my preferences display correctly!
Just installed it and it works great!

(I do think ZOS should fix this, though.)
