My Friend ruined the Noble Colovian Beds for me

My friend ruined the Noble Colovian Beds for me by pointing out that they look like they belong in a funeral parlor. And they do. And now I can't get that image out of my head. The normal one is bad enough but the one with a canopy looks just like the top of a coffin. I'm going to try to cobble over these to make them look less funeral-ish. Anyone have any ideas?

The thing that gets me with them is just how stiff they look. Maybe add a new mattress or blankets and a pillow?

I don't know if you meant it that way but that was a great pun! :D

    And I'll try that!

Because of how hard and not very bed-like they look, I prefer use them as a chaise lounge. Maybe with an extra pillow. Or cobble several together along with other things for a larger bed.

I definitely noticed the funeral parlor look when I first saw them, you're not alone. The entire problem with them is that they are based on Ancient Roman furniture, specifically those found in dining areas, called lectus triclinaris. Many historical depictions of these in statuary and murals feature quite a bit more padding than what is seen on the ESO models.

The padding that is there is much too stiff and square looking, and is in the wrong position, while the headrest should have pillows resting in the curve. Ancient Romans often lounged on their sides on such furnature while eating, so they weren't as uncomfortable looking as our in game ones. There were typically three lecti arranged in a sort of half-square around a round table, where food/refreshments would be within easy reach.

If you want some inspiration for making them look more comfy, look to the Romans! I'd suggest some of the Elsweyr pillows, or some of the longer square Khajiit pillows, they might fit into the headrest. Clipping smaller carpets and pillows into them might make them look more restful.

    Good luck!

What a wonderfully insightful post. I couldn't remember what these were supposed to resemble for the life of me. When I saw this thread, I was hoping someone knew! Thanks again. It's super interesting 🙏🏾 lectus triclinaris. I'll have to try to remember what these Colovian/Imperial beds are based on for real in the future!

Also I JUST realized I understand this Futurama joke better now lol

I'm glad you found it interesting! A lot of the Colovian furnishings take inspiration from Roman and Greco-Roman styles, with the occasional bit of art nouveau thrown in. They aren't the only culture to have similarly styled furniture (the Egyptians had a few things that were not unlike lectus triclinaris, especially since the cultures collided) but since the Colovian styles directly feature trapezophoron or "table bearers" (the winged lions on the legs) they're very Roman. Amusingly though, the word for them is Greek xD

Here's a table found in Pompeii which bears a similarity to the trapezophoron on ESO's Colovian furnishings:

Also! That Futurama episode always made me laugh XD Love that show!

Even if these are based on Ancient Roman furnishings a bed still needs to look and function like a bed. It's supposed to be a place to rest at night, not eternally.

I agree with you! I'm just showing other forum goers some of the history behind the base design, because it's playing into the reason why they're not looking very bed like. Essentially, they took the base aspects of the furniture without giving them the comfort the Romans would have had, so they end up looking like coffin bearers.

What kind of style/feel are you going for with your cobbled design? Or are you just looking for general bed suggestions to potentially use them in the future?

I agree with you, too and can see how the Roman furnishings are influencing the Colovian, which I had never noticed before so thank you for that! My complaint is with the design of these beds in particular.

I'm currently decorating the Julianos house and it came with some of these beds. I've been able to utilize most of the furnishings that came with the house but just can't use these beds as they are.
