Is it mostly true that trial dummy parsing is a poor indicator of actual pve dps?

A dummy doesn't move and PUGs are a mixed bag when it comes to debuffs. I've been running ansuul's, lover mundus, and skoria guise for extra penetration and consistent dps. If I geared for parsing, my dps would be half of what I do in dungeons which is not worth the compromise. Am I missing anything here?

Trial dummy parses are more about having a standard for comparing builds and less about knowing how much damage you’d do in content. That said, the trial dummy is based around buffs and debuffs you’d get in a high-end trial composition. The 6mil can be used for comparing solo builds since you have to source your own penetration. There’s no dummy for dungeons, what you’ll have to do is combine build basics and pugging (use combat metrics if you can to look at boss fight penetration and critical damage) to work out a build. That said, the trial dummy isn’t entirely useless as its a good starting point, then afterwards add common ways of getting to pen cap (force of nature, lover mundus, light armor, skoria, until you get to pen cap).

No. People who parse better will have their rotations memorized. They also care about getting the right traits, and slotting the right skills, optimizing their damage stats, and use potions and synergies when given. You can always play slower, but you can't necessarily play fast and reach the highest DPS until you've practiced it. Obviously there's more to do in live content, like can you move and DPS at the same time, but if you don't do damage while stationary you're not going to do damage in dungeons anyway.

target dummies are a good way to test builds/rotations to see what feels comfortable, and get a general idea of your avg dps

like suggested, the trial dummy is more meant for say if your expecting to be doing semi organized vet trials where there is a coordination of buffs and debuffs

the 3 or 6 mil dummy is better for parsing if your trying to test against dungeons, since if you solo you will have to source everything

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

Trial dummies are great tools for perfecting your rotation and testing different setups to give you apples to apples comparisons. They're not great indicators of actual DPS because live combat scenarios are so different. However, it is also generally true that a player who can perform well on a parse will also have great performance in live combat situations because their mind is less focused on the rotations and more on the mechanics of the encounter. Moreover, in optimal situations, players will actually have BETTER performance in live combat situations than they will on a dummy because they have even more buff options available to them than they do when they're parsing.

The real question is when are we getting modular dummies that we can alter the stats, buffs and debuffs.

They're slightly different skillsets, but setting a parse minimum ensures that players can potentially reach that high in content, and generally do their job of burning enemies down. I've occasionally performed better in content than players who parsed higher than me. For a group progressing difficult trial content, they would look at performance and achievements and not just parse.

There are obvious differences, like sets that only work in parsing and can't be used in a lot of content (like Harpooner's Wading Kilt). It's just for a relative benchmark.

Something more indicative would be, debatably, best score in a solo arena on that patch, because that factors in time as well as not dying--and involves a lot of mechanics. But that also isn't a perfect indicator and takes much longer. It would be kind of cool if they made a solo arena that's meant to somewhat replicate the types of mechanics of a trial boss fight.
