Order's Wrath vs Mother's Sorrow - I Can't Decide

Khajiit Necro magicka here.

Casual player. Just last year I got serious and equipped sets. I play solo. 800+ CP. All overland content, save for the World Bosses in the expansion Chapters. I can grind through the Treasure Hunter set dungeon without death, just need to be patient with the last three bosses. That's my comfort limit at the moment. All my characters have max crafting.

I Use 5 x Mother's Sorrow, weapons, hat, rings, 2 x Julianos feet and legs, 5 x Treasure Hunter.

To cut to some numbers and avoid a detailed list of my gear and CP etc...

Currently Bonus Critical Damage is currently 20% and Critical Chance is 61.3%/68.5% front/back bar.

With OW replacing MS I estimate that I'll get 28% Bonus Crit Damage and 59% Critical Chance front/back.

Currently, my Spell penetration is 7274 and I feel that should be more but I seem to do okay in overland content. I'd definitely use The Lover if soloing a dungeon.

I feel that OW will be a net gain for me in terms of damage dealt.

But the ease with which it can be made makes me think that it is really supposed to be "Mother's Sorrow Lite" for very very new players who aren't quite up to getting hold of MS. Thus... I have made a mistake here.

Throwing OW on all my magicka characters will cost a pretty penny in resources so I'm seeking your help. Good or bad move?

i personally see the orders wrath as a more flexible version of medusa, as the bonuses are closer on those, except since orders wrath is crafted you can make any size you need instead of trying to get jewelry/weapons for a heavy armor set

orders wrath crit dmg bonus is also unique so that it can stack with the actual minor force buff (not that you may need that since your already on a khajiit)

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

Personally, I was running False God + MS for my solo build before the patch. Just dropped False God for OW. Running both OW and MS and getting decent crit damage and chance, only needed to make a few adjustments for sustain.

But, I would say, using OW instead of treasure hunter is probably a better call. You can get major prophecy from other sources.

Hmmm for Major Prophecy I would need to waste a skill bar slot, front and back I think - Mages or Fighter's Guild skill which is useless for PvE iirc. That's why I grinded for Treasure Hunter. That's the one I don't want to give up.

Not sure if Major Prophecy is available through food/drink or whatver else, but I have an absolute ton of reasonable food from ESO+ that I prefer to use.

having a fighters guild skill slotted gives you all the other passives from fighters guild (bonus ult when killing things, increased dmg)

camo hunter also gives you minor berserk when attacking an enemy from flank, so while the active portion of the skill is not useful it is a pretty efficient passive

Any new thoughts on Orders Wrath vs. Mothers Sorrow as we close out 2025? Does the thought pendulum still swing toward Orders Wrath? Is Mothers Sorrow no longer worthwhile? What is the new flavor of the season for pure 64 Magicka DPS?

Orders Wrath is a nice set and better then MS since it is craftable in my opinion. If doing a beam build don't forget about TIde born set, that is also craftable.

    Stay safe :)

Max stats says OW +1971 crit chance versus MS +2872. BUT OW gives you +129 W&S damage and +8% crit damage and healing. Not sure what the crit chance % values are for those, but the additional damage might make up for that?

I'd suggest crafting just one set and using the armoury to make it easy to A:B test the difference in practice between the two. That's basically what I did for one of my characters. These things are always a trade-off, so it's more important to see how that trade plays out for your play-style and the content you prefer.

MS is still a very viable set.

I'd drop Treasure Hunter because the 5 piece bonus is weak. You're better off slotting Camo Hunter (for extra wep/spell dmg from the guild passives) or Detonating Siphon from your Grave Lord skill line for the buff. It's a very decent AoE dmg skill and passively increase dmg done by 3% and activates all those juicy passives in that skill line. Or simply use spell crit potions (Lady's Smock, Water Hyacinth, and Bugloss).

Macabre Vintage is a fun set for soloing, and pretty powerful too. It's an overland set from West Weald, ie easy to obtain.

    Definitely Order's Wrath.
While Mother's Sorrow is pretty useful for Magicka characters, it is the weapon damage line that makes Order's Wrath universally useful.
The problem lies within how abilities scale from max stat and WD/SD. Most abilities get a higher damage increase from one line of wd/sd than from one line of max stat.

That doesn't make a line of max stat ineffective, but inefficient.

    if Pen and crit damage can't full,Penetrate=Crit damage>crit chance>Weapon damage>max stamina/magic
Order wrath in most place(solo/4man dungeon/pug trial/pvp) still better than MS
but if you are khajiit or have 2 skill line passive have crit dmg,and tank runing LE or SAX,MS will better
but crit chance now main from other set or nb line,MS still a bad choose in most place

If you are running strictly PVE, Tide-Born Wildstalker is another set you should check out. Its also a strong set if you decide to move to group PVE and does not have the issue of hitting the crit cap in groups that Order's Wrath has

Don't know if you've ever THOUGHT about healing, but the cool thing about order's wrath is it's a great set for DPS & a starter set for healers too. Nice for solo as well!

Agree with the comment above me though, tide born wildstalker is sick!
